- We are using Native New Zealand timber for this floor. It is beautiful but the floor framing isn't. In this episode, we show a quick way to straighten the floor frame. Also, I show you the camera gear I use to make my videos.

It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.

This is minor, but I love that you guys wear hearing protection. So many people I see don't have any hearing protection or thoughts about it. I wear some kind of hearing protection quite a lot, and it's nice to see other people who value their hearing.

Who in North America was watching them put down the floor and was like “what, no subfloor”.
We don't have subfloors in New Zealand. T&g goes on joists (same if using chipboard flooring and carpet)
Not just North America...in the UK here. Our engineered wooden 18mm flooring is laid on top of 9mm ply, on 3mm underlay, on basic floorboards on top of joists. And it still creaks a bit in places! I'm really surprised this solution doesn't feel spongey, even with really well installed joist frame
Subfloor as in underlay?
Most new homes (Australia ) have a 19mm particle board sheeting installed under the floorboards first, then the poly-glue is trowel along with secret nails. This renovation looks like they have had to match existing floor heights, hence the installation methods they have Chosen. What they have done is still mostly compliant with code, as long as the floorboards are end matched and correct secret nails are used. :)

In Canada we have floor joists and then lay subfloor (3/4" or 5/8" plywood as eg) is it climate that negates the need for a sub floor where you are? Just curious as I know climates need different solutions.

My brother-in-law once cut half a load of firewood with the saw-chain on his chainsaw on backwards. He sharpened it several times, but “it didn’t seem to make much difference”!
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂.... how do you even install it backwards? The gearing/ chain interface is usually directional so it can't go backwards!
The sprocket is omni-directional to allow it to be turned to get even wear and although the chain drive-tangs are scalloped on one side to allow sawdust to self-clear, the chain will very easily go on backwards. It is an easy mistake to put it on backwards, but to persist and attempt to cut for 15 minutes or so is the extraordinary part!

We would just rip down and shim the top of the old lumber, sometimes use 1/2, 1/4, 3/4" ply wood pieces. Expensive material bill to use additional joist material to just make up a small space.
That was a good call on the adding boards to the joist. Either gonna cost in material or time.

Check out Advantech Subfloor Adhesive or Great Stuff Pro Construction Adhesive. The Foam cans with the gun. Adhesive Caulking is almost obsolete with these products. One can of foam glue will last beyond many many tubes of caulk so you don't have to switch tubes so often. You don't have to squeeze caulk anymore either. Worth it.

Why would you not use a generous application of construction adhesive when sistering the joists?
Yes - and, no sub floor - wild stuff. The adhesive is stronger than screws or nails.

Are there no air tightness regulations in NZ? I can't see that floor passing a blower door test.
John Latham no we don’t have air tightness tests here. In fact we build in a way that lets air in and out ( a little bit) but no moisture. We do occasionally air tight test windows though

I've been a follower of this channel for I think 2 and a half years I started watching this when I worked with a Joiner building some furniture, nothing great. Then over a year ago I left that job and decided to start a carpentry apprenticeship. I'm well over a year in now and although Im not working to the level that you and Paitho work at, I feel that I get better at my job when I follow the channel so thanks.
*_Question from Timber noob:_* You said when you do the cladding, that it has to be nailed once, not glued so it can move and expand. So why is it when you do the floor you nail and glue it down. Doesn't that effect it's ability to expand? If not why?

How come you don’t install plywood first on top of the joists then the hardwood on top of the plywood?
The flooring is structural sound so installing plywood beforehand only adds unnecessary work and cost. The ‘hardwood’ is essentially your plywood ‘subfloor’ and finished flooring in one.
@@hlmccann wouldn’t it make the hardwood in between the joist flex a little? Since there’s no plywood underpayment support.
@@icepop3440 about as much flex as plywood. To be fair tongue and groove floor boards are rarely used in new builds, most are concrete slab with plywood/strand floor for 2nd floor. It’s usually used for renovations/repairs to match into existing tongue and groove floor boards.
@@hlmccann I’m from the U.S and here we always use use tongue and groove boards on new construction. I’ve been a flooring contractor for 10 years and never seen hardwood installed just over joists. It was just was interesting to see him installing floors that way.

In the US a board floor isn’t allowed to be directly on joists. The thinking is repeating sandings would weaken the floor.

Oh, my sweet summer child - coming from the sound guy. In the microphone world it is dirty cheap, but for the dslr/mirrorless it is sensible choice, anything better would be bottlenecked by your camera preamps. In my opinion rode videomic ntg would be better overall package, but upgrading is probably not worth it, you made your choice and your videos sound exceptional for what they are!

Please explain why the framing on the wall is so different from the state? So many horizontal bracing?
If you’re doing this on the regular a tongue nailer is definitely the best way to go. Nil faffing around and so quick.
