  • Ann seeks inspiration from many sources but this time has she gone too far? We at the LSPRF love cake and challenged Ann to create piece using design elements from cake decorating. You might pick up a few tips on how to design your next piece. Enjoy friends!
    Answers to questions we get all the time:
    We typically bisque to Cone 04 and fire to Cone 5-6
    Ann uses Standard English Porcelain no. 365 unless specified otherwise in the video

    Using that measuring spoon is genius!

      Hey Debbie!!! Thanks for that. I did several different versions of the flowers before i figured out that I could do the whole thing just using both ends of the measuring spoon. It turned out to be an elegant and consistent and simple solution to my problem. In the end, you actually can sculpt it more for an even more elaborate flower.

      Hey Suzanne. Thanks so much!!! I really had to get creative when I was thinking about how to make the flowers. I tried several different methods but wanted something that would be a consistent size and fit within my boundaries and also something simple I could teach to you. The measuring spoon (using both ends) was the most elegant solution and I just showed a simple way to sculpt it. You can get more creative with it to really make it complex if you want. Give it a try!

    There you go… being amazing again!!🤗
    I loved all of it, but the foot idea was the bomb!
    I’ve often wondered why potters don’t use stamps more often, or cookie cutters. The metal kind can easily be made into any shape. Seems like it would save time. Your stamp turned out beautifully for you.🤗❤️🐝

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 Рік тому +1

      Hey Deborah!! Aww...thanks so much. I like your thinking about reshaping the cookie cutters, I havent tried to do that. I wonder if you need special tools for metal working to make that work??? I will have to do some research, you know i love that.

      @@annruel1982 lol I’m no expert at metalworking, but I wouldn’t think so, possibly a soldering gun. I imagine the proper metal thickness would help with it retaining it’s shape. What the proper thickness would be… I have no idea. lol But once you got it right, just think how easy it would be to produce patterns of almost any size?! Anyway, happy researching!! ❤️🤗🐝

    Cake decorating is a very popular hobby and materials and supplies that translate well to sculpture and pottery are widely available at craft stores, even when pottery or clay working supplies and tools may not be and alot of them translate well across mediums with a little adaptation and ingenuity. The popularity of the hobby also makes second hand cake decorating supplies more widely available for next to nothing. Adopt, adapt and improve. The only thing I would look out for is that some cake decorating materials don’t actually take well to clay and cannot be adapted easily, so it is always worth thinking about whether you can make something translate.

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 Рік тому +2

      Good tips. Thanks Quiet. A lot of times, if you get very creative like controlling the dryness or viscosity of the clay you can have more success when adapting tools for using with clay. You just have to do the work and experiment with it...that is what we are trying to do with our channel. Thanks for watching 🙂

Wouldn’t you know that just last week I threw away some cake decorating tools! I have 73 food allergies so no way I’m decorating any cakes or cookies! What was I thinking? I never throw things away and the one time I do wouldn’t you know I needed it! Never throwing anything away again! Hahaha. Thanks sooo much Ann. It is hard to steer someone on a certain path when they are starting out because there are so many paths available. When I was teaching hand building, I would always start with the basic hand building techniques including slab work, coils, and pinch pots. When I would teach wheel throwing, it was all about practicing centering, pulling, shaping etc. If there is a skill you are looking for the channel has a "Search" feature that you can type in what you are working on and hopefully you can find it. Good luck!!
