    Hey dude, thanks once again for having me on!
    It feels weird to compliment you on a video we shared in making, but since you handled the editing, I just wanted to say this had a lot of really nice moments that kept my attention, and fit thematically with the point of the video, as well as what we are saying. I'll work to keep it just as slick in the Gurren Lagann one. I think this turned out great. Thanks again man. Keep makin good stuff.

    Made in Abyss - The anime / manga that DEMAAANDS a video game adaptation. Everything is there.
    Leveling Systems - Whistles
    Areas for different levels - Layers of the Abyss
    Mechanics - The curse
    Leveling hubs - Orth, the seeker camp (conveniently placed in the lower parts of the second layer, so it can also function as a hub for the third layer), Nanachis 'house', Idofront (and possibly the [MINOR MANGA SPOILERS] Narehate village)
    Monetary progression - More and more valuable artifacts
    Spending the money - Useful relics, new gear (backpacks, pickaxes, ...), ...
    Gear progression - Useful relics that are found and/or bought
    Enemies - Many many creatures of the Abyss
    Bosses - Splitjaw, Ozen, That weird Porcupine (I can never remember its name), Bondrewd, ...
    And all that with either Pokémon Mystery Dungeon-esque gameplay or Monster hunter-esque gameplay.

    Wow, I knew this show was popular but I'd never really looked into it, I thought it looked childish (not in a bad way mind you) and didn't look like my kind of thing, but wow I got chills while you were describing that scene. Yet another new show that's piqued my interest thanks to you :)

    Thanks for making this video. As I began reading the manga along with watching the show, I was amazed by how well the anime was adding to the story and filling in the details. Episode 9 is an especially good example of that. Its something that Made In Abyss doesn't get enough credit for.

    this has to be the most faithful adaption, of pretty much anything i have ever seen. a lot of it seems to be almost panel by panel acurate.

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  7 років тому

      Yeah, it's extremely faithful, and that makes me incredibly happy. I mean, I'm not saying that an adaptation that changes things is bad--but I felt that this adaptation managed to even accentuate and add some small things that enhanced the story for me. A really great show.

      From what I understand form another video, the director (I think) did another anime series which was a 1 to 1 recreation of the manga (anime was exactly like the manga). Its still great to see a series done like this though.

    Hey man, I love your videos especially the way you present it, so cheers to that. Also can you do like a video on:
    1. Classroom of the elite(want to know about ayanokoji's past
    2. Black clover( why is it being compared to Naruto)
    3. March comes in like a lion( why it more than just an anime.

  • @shayoko6
    @shayoko6 7 років тому +4

    i haven't read or seen this show yet. but a proper adaption is so rare. they always have to change or add things especially when it comes to the heavier sexual/violent scenes. them deciding to show that much was a really good move.
    adding more impact thus making scenes more memorable.
    even madoka magicas anime didn't avoid changes. it really is a shame they do it. because more often than not the source material is best.

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  7 років тому

      yeah a proper adaptation is really rare! I definitely agree.
      I always thought that madoka magica was an original anime. what was it based off of?

    • @shayoko6
      @shayoko6 7 років тому +1

      pretty sure it is based off the manga *Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica* (12 chapters)
      it does have several other manga related to the universe
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_chapters
      and a PSP game.
      ua-cam.com/video/cakMtQMHGMk/v-deo.html

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  6 років тому +1

    Great video man! Just one quick recommendation to slightly improve the quality of your videos: you should take mother's basement as an example and put some of the anime's soundtrack so that the background doesn't feel empty between your words. Instantly subbed btw, keep it up

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  7 років тому +2

      Thanks, bud! So thank you for bringing that to my attention; I'll try to fix it for my future videos. ^_^

    I really liked this video but it would be great if you made a second video to point out the flaws in the show as well (like the horrid pacing and themes that are geared towards children in episode 9 towards it's end when its suppsoed to be a seinein). It's always important to know that not every show is perfect, and that its perfectly ok for a show to have flaws and to point them out

    • @Lowart
      @Lowart  7 років тому +4

      Thanks! I'm happy that you liked the video :)
      Personally, I didn't find the pacing to be as big a problem as most seemed to, and I never found any of the themes to be mishandled or purely geared towards children in a way that didn't resonate with me on some level. I can definitely appreciate why people would have problems with both of these things though; where the manga is fairly fast-paced, this anime is incredibly slow at some points. I just happen to not mind the slow pace, I guess.

    I know this is my fault, but I haven't seen the show yet and I feel that A big part of the show was spoiled for me.(again I have no one to blame but my self)I only got to about 4:30ish before I stoped the video. Is the show still worth watching even with that point spoiled?

    • @iko5698
      @iko5698 7 років тому +1

      It is, because it's an anime that relies a lot on worldbuilding and atmosphere, not just one big scene to make the show. There's plenty of multilayered interpersonal dynamic and interaction

    I still think the Manga is better overall.
    I don't like the pacing the Anime has. It just moved way too slow pretty much all the timer after episode 2.
    This is my biggest complaint. Things like:
    - characters taking a few seconds to turn around and then talk, only after fully turning
    -chracters (Reg) standing still while thinking (a normal person would not stop moving just to think two sentences, they would keep moving and keep doing what they do)
    - characters barely talking while moving in general
    - characters acting one after another, not simultaneous
    - animals waiting for Riko and Reg to get ready, not going in right away
    Things like this really take me out of a series. In the Manga, you don't notice these things, because time is frozen, but if you adapt it, you ahve to find workarounds. Either change the show composition, shorten dialouge, or add scenes/shots where the dialouge can fit in.
    It also really took me out of it during the scene you were praising so much in this video.
    Reg moves so slowly, pausing to highlight his shaking eyes (also a really stupid effect in my opnion, but well it's not too bad I guess, i just don't like it) slowly panning over to Riko body, while time is clearly passing as normal (as indicated by his shaking eyes).
    And streching like this happens a lot during those 8min the scene lasts.
    To me, this scene was so special in the Manga also because it was moving so fast while reading, only being 10 pages.
    It really felt like Reg was in panic, rushing to save Riko before she (as he thinks) will die to the poison and bleeding in the next few minutes (and she might have, as her breathing stopped for a while). In the Anime, it felt like he was taking his time being shocked and looking at her. It never felt actually urgent to help her right that moment. And this continues when nanchi shows up. Reg takes his time talking to her, standing still for a few seconds to look shocked when she shows up, and both Nanachi and Reg talk pretty slow keeping in mind Riko dying right next to them.
    Things like that destroy an Anime for me. Too slow pacing resulting from lackluster understanding of how to do dynamic visuals during a conversation. In a Manga it is enough, to make a panel look good. Sure, page layout and reading pattern matter to convey timing and movement, and enhance effect, but overall the individual shot comes first.
    However, you can't just carbon copy this into a medium with movement. You need to restructure things, because people don't stop moving to talk and think. Shots shouldn't linger like they do in Manga.
    I think they tried to follow specific shots from the Manga too much, and keep them on screen for too long. It just feel unnatural when characters act like that, and every time it happens, I want to hit the fast foreward key so it moves a little faster.
    Really, this is a problem with storyboarding and direction. They did a good job with adding voice acting (although I don't like Ozen's voice for her character) and especially music, and the animations themselves are great. But when it comes to combining them, it doesn't hold up.
    They also removed some really flavorful details that really made the Abyss come to life for me. Things like the big snake thing they fight in layer 3 being eaten by the others animals after it falls down from Reg's blow. Just how they instantly rushed to devour it was really scary but also beutiful.
    Also, I much prefer the artwork in the Manga. Mostly I dislike the color design in the Anime. I really dislike most of the colors they use, and how they combine them. Also, characters like Ozen and Bondrewd just don't emit the same air of terror they do in the Manga, where they are only displayed in two colors. They also look way scarier when they don't move in my opinion.
    The one this Anime does perfectly, is sound design and direction. The music itself is great, but the way they implement it in the series and in combination with the ambient sounds is just breathtaking.
    Overall a really good adaptation, but I will still prefer the Manga if they don't improve the pacing.

      Yeah, the anime had many episodes of very slow pacing. For whatever reason though, slow pacing in stories rarely bothers me in and of itself, but I can totally understand why it would have a pretty severe negative impact for some viewers. Reading through the manga, things just went so much faster; sometimes I found that to be better, sometimes I found that to be worse.
      All those things you listed are really good points. I hadn't really considered that, since it didn't stand out to me for whatever reason. But I have a feeling that now that you've pointed it out, if I go back, it's gonna bug me...
      I really like what you're saying about the different pacing of the scene I praised so highly in the video. You bring up a great point of how much that pacing impacts Reg's character. Personally, I loved that slow and contemplative take on the events and I thought that it served to highlight his panic. But it definitely made him seem slower, as far as his thoughts and actions are concerned.
      I definitely agree with you about the sound design, that's for sure. Damn did they do a good job of that.
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts, bud! You gave me a lot to think about, especially if I ever go back and rewatch the series.

      The pacing was by design.
      They had too many episodes to hit chosen end point, and there was too much of the next big arc to go past it.
      Even though it'd be a shoe-in for anime of the year if they had went all the way to chapter 38 for the season ending. Though they'd need about 18 or so episodes to do it (assuming you removed all the time-filler stuff they put in to stretch things out).
      So they had to try and stretch and fill time as subtly as possible. Though IMO they could've saved some of their tricks simply by including the 3 Bonus side-story chapters. They used half of Side-Story chapter 2 for the beginning of episode 12, and could've easily squeezed in 1 back around chapter 4. and then 2 around episode 8. and then inter-mix 3 into 11.
