  • "Made With: Flows of Cultures and Materials Between Cultural Appreciation and Appropriation," April 4, 2023.
This session is part of the AUP/IHTP-CNRS research seminar series: Fashion Cultures & Histories with our annual theme of Deconstructing Paris fashion: towards a de-hierarchized narrative.
The history of Paris fashion has largely been told as a story of high fashion, of individual creativity and genius, of exclusive and perfect products, glossy images, and the enduring figure of La Parisienne. Fashion here has been largely promoted by media, advertising, and tourism as an essential element of global Western modernity, rooted in the city of Paris. The commercial and cultural narrative of Paris as “world capital of fashion” - as enticing and economically successful as it may have been and still is - has had significant consequences that have not been sufficiently analysed and call for a transdisciplinary critical enquiry. This seminar series aims to deconstruct dominant narratives around “Paris fashion”, to contribute to the re-writing of de-hierarchized and de-centralized fashion histories. To do so, it builds on and brings together seminal research, practices, and perspectives.
This session is devoted to the question of Made With: Flows of cultures and materials between cultural appreciation and appropriation. It aims to explore the question of textile and clothes exchanges through the lens of the notions of cultural appreciation and appropriation. Speakers include:
    • Magali An Berthon, PhD, Historienne du Textile, Postdoctorante, bourse Marie Skłodowska-Curie, Centre for Textile Research, University of Copenhagen, « Key moments in silk politics, production and heritage in twentieth-century Cambodia »
    • Khémaïs Ben Lakhdar, Doctorant, IFM-Paris I, « Appropriation Culturelle. Historiographie et mise en perspective »
    • Severine Experton Dard, Expert en Patrimoine de Mode et Textile, « Influences et inspirations, de quelques étoffes à la mode »
