Nice video. I get what your saying and it's true, it opens up VRAM..., but I tried what you said and ran the game "DCS: World". There was absolutely no performance improvement nor less VRAM usage while the game ran. I believe that what you say is true, I also believe that the VRAM used by these nice VR rooms is released again as soon as it does not have to be rendered. Thus when DCS starts, the VR room closes and opens up VRAM anyway. I tried DCS with the Steam VR house active and again without Steam VR house active. PC was restarted in between to make absolutely sure the new settings were loaded. Both times I had about 10,5GB VRAM usage. So imho, it didn't change a lot🤷🏻♂. But very informative video about the VR house and VRAM usage, thanks for that👍🏻
I think for systems with slower or smaller ram use you will see definate improvement see my other video on ram and storage speeds. Each time you at loading unloading textures your CPU ram and disk are all hit. Besides having no home and no enviroment speeds up all load times too!
Its really make a different no doubt about it it as remove my stutter that where cause by vram and maybe the 2time you get the same ammount of rame because the card tell to the game he can take more vram some game take more vram the more you are free and stop when they are loading about 80% of the total vram maybe that 10.5 is near that and that why you always see that number
well, of course you will save up some Gb if you closed these apps but if you are in a game they don't affect your game performance at all. because they are closed once you are in a game.
Not quite based on measurements I had because the background apps are constantly there for a quick switch back they are using up memory and hold ram for reload of textures quick if you choose to snap out of game quick.
steam home and mixed reality remain in ram and vram for quick loadback .. slowing down your overall performance and using up resources.. for DCS i like to keep as much resources free as possible

yes.. you can set the resolution VERY LOW like 1024x768 for resolution on the settings page.. but keep in mind YOU still need the mirror to desktop as it is used to talk to your mouse for clicking on stuff.
I hade more problems with motion smoothing On then whit it Off on my 3080gtx, i was amazing how all the tearing jiddering went away especialy in DCS! i also played with Anastropic filtering and SSAA in DCS and now i got better performance and better quality :S
Skipped SteamVR and went with OpenXR. SteamVR consumes 2% CPU, a bit of GPU and introduced micro stutters. Frame time would drop to 20+ms from time to time. No more with OpenXR. Also things load faster without SteamVR.
@@gibilator nope I get around 45 as target in GS. In single player it's around 60. 45 is ideal as it's 1/2 of 90 and above the 30 fps aka puke zone. I've never been over 50 on GS. Ever. 35-40 is comfortable. 45 is just right.
I was under the impression you had to restart Steam VR/Game anytime you changed the resolution/SS for it to take place, is that wrong? I never noticed a change until after I restarted, but I've also never made extreme obvious changes.
hmm.. so im getting various responses, based on general feedback i am getting if you have 16gb vram it will keep hanging out in vram.. if vram gets busy or full it will migrate to ram and hang out there.. so if you unload it, less stuff to load up from drive (faster start up of VR and less memory allocation)

I believed until now, that Steam or WMR „closed/standby“ the rooms after start a game , just used vram if something renders. :::RESULT::: How I expected, It changed nothing in my case. How many fps you get more (same ingame settings)? How much VRAM use the game now with (same ingame settings)?
Il try these.the homes definitly have an impact because i noticed a difference just changing the mixed reality home resolution.i wish steam and microsoft would make a more basic portal for vr,i dont need these homes ,i just want to play vr games!
Man I hope this helps, because out of nowhere my VRAM shot up to 8GB and I couldn't play anything. Will report back if it helped. edit Well, not sure if this was what fixed my problem, but it certainly reduced my VRAM usage. On top of having very high VRAM usage with HL2 VR, the game would glitch and "run" at less than 1 FPS until the video driver crashed. No idea if this is what fixed it, but it seems to run better now. Also, you don't need you buy any program, GPU-Z gives you the same data, and it's free. Or use MSI Afterburner to monitor VRAM usage.
note .. some folks mentioned Skyspaces prompts for a "unsafe" app - I think its because its not signed off by microsoft. if you do not want to download and install sky spaces i figured out where the Empty Room file is and uploaded it and here are instructions to manually install it .. i uploaded the EmptyRoom file to easyupload.io/ad8bhx you can grab the file here (will expire 30 days after this post) after its downloaded go to (you can hit Windows-R and into run address paste) %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\EnvironmentsApp_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState copy the Empty room file there once the file is in the folder you restart WMR and empty room will show up .. no sky spaces needed!
Isn't this all moot given WMR can be set to open WMR for SteamVR, and since you've already turned off SteamVR home, all you have is a blank space with low res hills in the background while you use virtual desktop to launch a new game. This might have been useful in the past, but redundant at those point and it's just going to confuse new users.
DCS still runs pretty bad, you need shader mods to run it properly, I don't use steamvr or WMR. I use the Quest2 openxr API and standalone game launch (with oculus homeless enabled) so same as this video but for quest. DCS won't run properly until Vulkan is released, were hoping for Q1/22 but well see. I just read today that they we will likely see multi core support before vulkan, but it's coming and to be patient... ARG! lol

Thank you for the steamVR Home off tip, this dropped my GPU memory. I use a valve index with a 12900k and 3090ti. Why do you turn off advanced supersample filtering in SteamVR?
Still, DCS require much more ressources to run in VR and is miles away in term of graphics compared to msfs... I just bought the hawk t1 from justflight and its just incredible.
@@despoiler79 there is some further optimization which is needed for DCS.. also keep in mind that in DCS each missile, each bullet is calculated in real time, this applies to anything tanks and other vehicles fire. which is pretty hard on our poor pcs..

I always wondered if the home area was running in the background, my cursor in the desktop seemed to chug when I selected it through the home in P3d and DCS and I figured the card should have been far from full load.

Is it because you're center is away from you? So it's coming up but like behind you. Also you can uninstall and reinstall wmr this will reset everything
DCS is broken code. It always has been. DCS is a Cash machine simulator. Even with this "fix" the game is unplayable in anything but one vs one air combat. *UPDATE* Using OpenXR and toolkit has changed the game entirely. It now runs perfectly. SteamVR must go.

Heya Rayyan, - this is because its a mobile processor. Max Turbo Frequency 3.90 GHz Processor Base Frequency 1.30 GHz because its mobile it has to FULLY Rev up to 3.9ghz to run. Now.. here is the catch also because it is mobile at full load it will start to overheat, so it will try to slow itself down. its a balancing act. .but for DCS (and other games) you MUST keep the processor as COOL as possible while its at max use.. to do this,, get some cooling pads for the laptop. you may need to add a fan to the top of the laptop too if you can.. get OPEN Hardware Monitor and use that to monitor your temps on the CPU and GPU while you play.
Guys I am running G2 with R5 5600X & RX6900XT & 32GB RAM but I am getting ghosting of planes in DCS. Tried motion smoothing but did not help. Any solution for that?
That's your anti aliasing. Chekc msaa taa fxaa one of them is causing the ghosting. Turn off all anti aliasing and try.again. Then turn them on one by one. Tell me which one it is I'm curious to know.
What irks me is their response when anyone brings up this issue. They refuse to fix the problem and just keep regurgitating the same B$hit line pretending the problem doesn't exist.
unless you are the Steam developer who will confirm that it does a full unload of of both VRAM and RAM (and I know it stays there and reserves resources) :D -- its a factual video, as both steam and windows mixed reality sit in background.
@@plazma1945 I don't need to be the dev. I just need to look at MSI afterburner stats of my pc that shows my GPU memory usage is the same when I am playing a game with home disabled and enabled. I imagine that's why you didn't prove this during playing a game. You're basically saying, look at my GPU memory usage whilst playing Alyx, and look at it when I turn it off?

oculus home can be turned off by default with nothing but a white box environment with nothing in it, i don't think this tutorial applies to Oculus users as i never run steam vr or wmr i just fire up oculus software an jump into DCS
@@plazma1945 Oculus tray tool also forces home off has some other settings there too. Just to add perhaps your settings would work for those using steam version of dcs through their Oculus
@@mackelby1 It's in the Mixed Reality settings. Go to settings, then Mixed Reality, then Headset Display, then Visual Quality of your home. You can then change to 'low' and '720p' Also, since you can set WMR to automatically open SteamVR (again in the Mixed Reality settings under Startup and Desktop/Automatic Startup), it never actually goes to the Cliffhouse or any other mixed reality space. It will only go to these places if you press the Windows icon button on the WMR controller. WMR Portal opened this way only uses about 40MB of memory.
sadly no. i havent used oculus too much. i would say for DCS first thing MSAA = 2x max Shadows = FLAT are my top to go settings to get some fps back. most important is keep pixel density at 1.0 for best quality dont try to take pixel density over 1.0 unless you have a 3080ti or 3090 .. it will punish your video card too much.
@@plazma1945 I haven’t had any problems on a 3080 with motion repro, msaa x2, and PD @ 1.3. However, I have mainly been flying Vegas in the 15. Have you used the shader mod? There’s also rebar fix for nVidia 30xx cards that is very involved but supposedly is a game changer. I’ve never taken the time to mess with it.
@@JayRacer rebar fix is fairly easy, if you can / trust yourself to flash your bios. This is normally done by going to the website of the manufacturer of your motherboard and downloading the latest bios that supports rebar. The bios file needs to be copied onto a USB stick, with the USB stick inserted do you will need to reboot the computer and going to the Bios, all of the newborn recent biases will be able to then detect the stick and load the new bios and update from the USB drive.. There are some other boards which will allow you to update the BIOS from a software program which will run right from within windows and updated by us but those are rare the most crucial thing is to ensure that you have the correct version of the bios for your motherboard to not risk a complete destruction of the motherboard if you download the wrong bios file for your motherboard, very careful for the Version types revisions and so forth. It's a similar process for updating the BIOS on your 30xx series video card, make sure it's the right video card from the right manufacturer and most manufacturers will provide a link to a specific bios which will have the rebar feature,. For the video cards most of the time the video card by us can be updated right from within the window so you don't need to do any rebooting he normally just download the file and double click on it and will update the video card to bios -- good luck I hope you get it to work I did it on my video card and gained about 5% performance. --, PS I tried to dictate this as this was a really long replies so apologies for any Mix-ups, text to voice does not always work correctly
@@plazma1945 nah you killed it bro. I appreciate it. Your 3 GB fix in conjunction with the NIS/FAR Injector app has Dirt 2.0 running flawlessly maxed out; 200% SS, and 4x MSAA. It’s a true game changer. Pie in the sky tours has a tutorial for using NIS in MSFS 2020 that’s also a gamechanger.

Get rid of steam and you get a game changing experience in DCS. Steam VR is a huge bottleneck even with a 3090 ti.
The thing is that I believe steam ve home closes right after u launch a game so this theory may not change much gaming, correct me if I’m wrong

No u just run the tool. Once to replace your default space. You must have wmr can't skip it. It's like the pre loader before steam. It's essential

Still, DCS require much more ressources to run in VR and is miles away in term of graphics compared to msfs... I just bought the hawk t1 from justflight and its just incredible.
@@despoiler79 there is some further optimization which is needed for DCS.. also keep in mind that in DCS each missile, each bullet is calculated in real time, this applies to anything tanks and other vehicles fire. which is pretty hard on our poor pcs..

I always wondered if the home area was running in the background, my cursor in the desktop seemed to chug when I selected it through the home in P3d and DCS and I figured the card should have been far from full load.
its definitely somewhere in there, if not in vram then its in system ram so it can load back up quickly.

@@plazma1945 so I go through the oculus app, oculus link, desktop to DCS. I don’t see how to get to DCS in steam as it is not a steam game. How do you access the app from inside the steam home room? Sorry I’m very new to VR and it’s been a steep learning curve for me.

:D -- it doesnt work under oculus.. :( .. you can achieve similiar boosts in oculus by seeing if there is an empty enviroment to preload the games in.. also you can press Left control and pause in DCS which will bring up the FPS as a set of numbers floating in VR in top left hand side of headset.
@@plazma1945 I did find a way to import non steam games into steam. Gonna check that out. fpsvr still doesn’t work though as it is not a steam game. Do you have anyway to increase FPS and quality with Flyinside for FSX? That’s the sim that’s really testing my patience. I have i7/10700-3.8/32gb ram/rtx 3060-12gb.

I have a 6800xt, along side a HP Reverb G2 V2 and in phas I get over 20ms of frame time, strange.

DCS is broken code. It always has been. DCS is a Cash machine simulator. Even with this "fix" the game is unplayable in anything but one vs one air combat.
*UPDATE* Using OpenXR and toolkit has changed the game entirely. It now runs perfectly. SteamVR must go.

because its mobile it has to FULLY Rev up to 3.9ghz to run. Now.. here is the catch also because it is mobile at full load it will start to overheat, so it will try to slow itself down.
its a balancing act. .but for DCS (and other games) you MUST keep the processor as COOL as possible while its at max use.. to do this,, get some cooling pads for the laptop. you may need to add a fan to the top of the laptop too if you can..
get OPEN Hardware Monitor and use that to monitor your temps on the CPU and GPU while you play.

That's your anti aliasing. Chekc msaa taa fxaa one of them is causing the ghosting. Turn off all anti aliasing and try.again. Then turn them on one by one. Tell me which one it is I'm curious to know.

@@plazma1945 I don't need to be the dev. I just need to look at MSI afterburner stats of my pc that shows my GPU memory usage is the same when I am playing a game with home disabled and enabled. I imagine that's why you didn't prove this during playing a game.

oculus home can be turned off by default with nothing but a white box environment with nothing in it, i don't think this tutorial applies to Oculus users as i never run steam vr or wmr i just fire up oculus software an jump into DCS

Go to settings, then Mixed Reality, then Headset Display, then Visual Quality of your home.
You can then change to 'low' and '720p'
Also, since you can set WMR to automatically open SteamVR (again in the Mixed Reality settings under Startup and Desktop/Automatic Startup), it never actually goes to the Cliffhouse or any other mixed reality space. It will only go to these places if you press the Windows icon button on the WMR controller.
WMR Portal opened this way only uses about 40MB of memory.

sadly no. i havent used oculus too much. i would say for DCS first thing MSAA = 2x max

are my top to go settings to get some fps back.
most important is keep pixel density at 1.0 for best quality dont try to take pixel density over 1.0 unless you have a 3080ti or 3090 .. it will punish your video card too much.
@@plazma1945 I haven’t had any problems on a 3080 with motion repro, msaa x2, and PD @ 1.3. However, I have mainly been flying Vegas in the 15. Have you used the shader mod?
There’s also rebar fix for nVidia 30xx cards that is very involved but supposedly is a game changer. I’ve never taken the time to mess with it.

This guy here has some solid tips. He also has a video somewhere on how to enable Rebar.
@@JayRacer rebar fix is fairly easy, if you can / trust yourself to flash your bios. This is normally done by going to the website of the manufacturer of your motherboard and downloading the latest bios that supports rebar.
The bios file needs to be copied onto a USB stick, with the USB stick inserted do you will need to reboot the computer and going to the Bios, all of the newborn recent biases will be able to then detect the stick and load the new bios and update from the USB drive..
There are some other boards which will allow you to update the BIOS from a software program which will run right from within windows and updated by us but those are rare
the most crucial thing is to ensure that you have the correct version of the bios for your motherboard to not risk a complete destruction of the motherboard if you download the wrong bios file for your motherboard, very careful for the Version types revisions and so forth.
It's a similar process for updating the BIOS on your 30xx series video card, make sure it's the right video card from the right manufacturer and most manufacturers will provide a link to a specific bios which will have the rebar feature,.
For the video cards most of the time the video card by us can be updated right from within the window so you don't need to do any rebooting he normally just download the file and double click on it and will update the video card to bios
