I would rank the remarkable Barenboim/Chicago recording as Munch’s equal.

Does this recording have the lowest frequencies produced by the organ or are they rolled off to prevent older inadequate audio systems from attempting to reproduced them? I can't imagine a recording from 1959 having those pedal tones.

Agreed on Barenboim-Chicago. It is precise, passionate, and flawlessly played.
