    I remember these. There was a phase when my German relations added the MPX adapters. The dealers used it as an opportunity to sell 'new' and outrageously expensive tubes, um die Tonqualität zu gewährleisten as they put it.
    Stereo broadcasts of live concert performances were wonderful to listen to - they really sounded outstanding.

      Everyone did it. The American manufactures would also upsell MPX adapters, especially for console stereo systems. This was a very short fad because by the mid 1960's These were simply automatically included with the sets, in the US at least

    Well done, Seth. They say to never watch the sausage being made, but I found it fascinating! Can't wait to get it back home. Thank you so very much.

    That radio brings back a lot of memories, I remember it well and the sound was fantastic. Much better than my little white plastic AM transistor handheld with an ear bud. My Grandfather was a NYC cop and as a young lad 0f 10 or 11 I used to go into work with him when visiting but first we had coffee with honey, a bagel and listened to the news and music with the exact radio you have there as he thought me to read the financial pages of the WSJ. I remember him crabbing about some new building being built and the repair shop where he used to get that radio fixed was being torn down. It was the WTC.

    Impressive German engineering. There are three "gallows" type vertical component mounts reminiscent of an American
    style Bulplate ( think early PC board) design. Do you see them? When you find solidified grease on a tuning knob take
    the plastic knob off and use a really big soldering gun to "warm up the grease". It can work over taking everything apart
    if you have to. An open flame should be the last resort. Nice restoration there again Seth. You do know your way around
    these German sets. It sounds really good.

    I know you said it did not have the FM multiplex adapter, but does it have stereo aux input? I notice it says stereo on the front and rear cover. Nice looking set, thanks for sharing.

      It does have a stereo aux input. But FM is strictly in mono

    The ECC83 over to the right of the ECL86s easily costs as much as both ECL86s combined. I'd take all of the tubes out of any foreign radio before I worked on it because I tend to be a bit clumsy at times.

    • @misterradio5035
      @misterradio5035  Рік тому

      Really. They are basically just 12AX7s which are super common. Is it just if they are labeled as ECC83's?

      @@weekendwarriorweldingdiypr4604 Holy shit, really? That's sort of insane given that an RCA or GE 12AX7 goes for a coupla' bucks. Guess its all about the name then

      @@misterradio5035 try googling telefunken 12ax7.... it'll knock your socks off. I have a few radios that I'd be happy to donate to the cause if there was a way to get them to you from houston. I bought them half to restore and half for the tubes. One in particular is a Telefunken Opus 5550.

    Why didn't Telefunken not use Diode Ring Mixers that operate in the balanced mode and means you get less mixer products and bandstop filters will take cake of unwanted mixer output ie allowing the Lower side band of the signal and not the upper side band.
