1934 Emerson Model 45 tombstone radio overhaul
This appears to be a survivor radio with mostly or all of its original finish. Great sound as well. This is another project of untangling decades of repairs.

1942 42-395 Philco Family Heirloom- from Alcatraz- gets an overhaul

According to the owner of this radio the set was originally located in one of the homes on Alcatraz island used for the small community there back before WW2. The set has not been used in decades. It was clearly very well taken care of and arrived in an unusual state of excellent original condition. This also has early FM, which was the frequency FM used from the late 1930's-1945, prior to the ...

    An early superhetrodyne radio with a whole lot of components in it's design with very low capacitor values and quite high resistor values mainly because it has an aperiodic( untuned) first RF stage in the receiver. A nice touch was having two lamps, one for lighting the shortwave band and one to light the broadcast band. Nice Seth type restoration.

      Fourier transformation, anyone? I am impressed by Seth's ability to repair and restore these ancient devices. I'm also curious about the flaming isolation transformer and the dripping gasoline in the 100F+ garage. That must have been...interesting.

    If your car was leaking gas out of the fuel pump there's a possibility that the diaphragm has gone bad. If diaphragm went bad it may be dumping gas into your crankcase which will blow the motor eventually. Definitely take a look at that you can rebuild them at home I just did the one of my 55 Buick it's easy

      Thanks for that. I pulled the shop manual for the car and looked up the fuel pump and what was leaking was the bottom cover for the sediment bowl. So the pump isn't leaking but the gasket that was between the cover and body was. I just snugged up the bolt a bit.

    I have a 1962 Studebaker Hawk and a 1963 Studebaker Avanti. On a hot day in Northwest Arizona in my garage there is a slight smell of gasoline since the gas tanks are vented to the atmosphere and so are the carburetors.

    Regarding “thrown together” videos, I love the way they are put together. Maybe it’s my ADHD, but the videos are structured in a way that makes perfect sense to my brain, and I can’t get enough of them. They’ve also been a great encouragement to me to go from being just a collector to repairing them. So far I’ve brought three of my radios back from the dead, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

    Say what you will, but that thing sounds better than any of those modern plastic suitcase players like the Crosley Cruiser! I'm sure you could bodge in a 12AV6 and use a newer stereo cartridge for compatibility if you wanted to.

    I don't know anything about that particular radio but I think a 50 amp fuse is way too big. A regular table radio draws about 30 watts so I don't expect the car radio to draw much more than 6 amps. I'd think a 15 amp fuse would be more than enough to prevent nuisance blowing but still small enough that it will protect in case of a short.

    Love the car! You got a gem! That would be fun to tool around in. Nice radio too! I saw the odometer with 18,000 + miles on it. Is that actual or has it gone around already. Doesn't matter I guess, beautiful car regardless.

    You're better off wet sanding the tail lights working your way up to 2500 grit. Then polishing them with plastic polish. Also when I do 54-56 Buick radios, I use a pair of Diodes and resistors to replace the 0Z4. I beleive your rectifier can be replaced the same way.

    I had one of these cars given to me by my uncle in 1961 when I was 11. I learned to drive on it. This is going back a few years, but I could have sworn the taillight lenses were glass. There used to be a guy that sold solid state vibrators that I found in Hemmings. I used them and they worked very well.

      I don´t know about USA cars, but I had 2 german VolksWagen type 1 (beetle) one from 1953 and the other 1957...both had glass lenses....but this is not relevant ...the real issue: is: Isn´t Mr Radio a "renaissance man", attacking with equal effort old electronics, restoring wood and plastic cases, even metal parts?...couldn´t He make silicone molds of those lenses, and make some reproducitions in some good looking red translucent resins? Hands up, people! Who thinks He can do It? Hands up!

    A vibrator is a square wave generator. O Volts to 6 V then back to O Volts . To act as a power supply it does this 115 times a second with two strips of metal switching electrical contacts back and forth electromechanically. That "pulse" is fed to a step up transformer's primary side and induces an AC output to the secondary side. It goes to a rectifier and then filter capacitors that makes the DC voltage output much higher than the 6 Volts originally supplied by the battery / alternator. A special note about a car radio. They went through temperature extremes in many cases and all resistors, capacitors, tubes must be changed out. After all it is 75 years old. Good call on adding Bluetooth to it Seth. Looks and sounds great! That song "You Belong To Me" by Jo Stafford was my mom's favorite song! She said she sung it to me when I was born. Thank you Seth this was a great video!

    Spray some light oil into that wiper motor on the vacuum side and work the blades back and fourth by hand. They dry out inside. Might take a decent amount to get it working to its best possible performance.

    • @setharp
      @setharp 13 днів тому

      Thanks. I just ASSUMED they did not work. But they do and as you saw- sluggishly. So you spray to get inside the mechanism, right?

    • @dwderp
      @dwderp 12 днів тому

      Vacuum wipers are notoriously wonky. If you’re standing still, they operate exactly as you just demonstrated-very sluggish. Plus your windshield is dry, which doesn’t help. The faster you go however, the more engine vacuum is produced, and the better they will work. It’s just the nature of the beast.

    The B+ in your radio should be somewhere around 250 to 275 volts if the HV circuit is working correctly. The 6AQ5 output tubes will not function correctly if the voltage is lower than that. There should be a .47uf 100Volt cap across the 6 volt input for radio noise and the critical one is the buffer cap which should be either a .0047uf or .0068 uf 1600 volt cap across the vibrator.

    • @setharp
      @setharp 13 днів тому

      Yup. I was able to get B+ to be pretty happy in the end. The buffer was .003uF and got replaced with a 3500 volt replacement.

      historically the pilots in your radio are considered part of the dash illumination circuit, (and not actually pilots) this means a traditional design extending well into the solid state and after market era.

    Interesting set, you can tell it was built to a price - lower cost cabinetry with simple veneer, no RF stage, no power transformer... But two rectifiers, an eye tube and ballast to inflate the tube count. Looks impressive but is basically an AA5 in a big cabinet. I bet they used that chassis in a console, too. It also appears the dial is paper - not metal like even mid range brands like Silvertone and Emerson would use. That being said, still a collectable set. I'd probably refinish the cabinet again the right way though - nothing worse than a badly refinished cabinet!
