Hey yall! Make sure you expand the video info above. I've included lots of links and resources about this topic!
Do you soak your seeds before planting?
@@jessidutton2269hey Jessi😊 I usually start my peas, beans watermelon and squash by pre-soaking them for a few hours before planting just because they have a harder shell than carrots, lettuce and other small seeds. I even soak my tomato and pepper seeds before hand sometimes, just to soften the shell, but it's not necessary if your planting in a warm soil and keep it moist in a sunny location. Hope that helps! I also start some both indoors and directly outside, if my temps stay above 60° out there here in FL. It all depends what Im planting and what season it is. Right now I can direct sow lettuce, radish, broccoli outdoors and it will sprout because we get into the 60's during the day with 35-45° nights, it might take them a little longer but they do good here in central Florida.
@@StaceyHerewegrowagain thanks! I'm in North Arkansas so we still have some winter left. Thanks for the info.
@@jessidutton2269 your welcome. During end of Jan into march we usually stay at 35° nights and 50-60° days so we don't get much frost at all luckily. I still have my 3 pepper plants jamming believe it or not, in the ground from a few months ago Lol they are making it so far and have given me so many already. It's strawberry season here in plant city. I live in a commercial growing town and we have the annual strawberry festival, which is amazing!! I'm growing my sunshine blue blueberries and some strawberries right now outdoors and both are bearing fruit. I so love that about growing here. I wish you all warmth soon!! It's going to be hot and sticky here real soon!

I have had to work for a living my whole life and now that I am retired I finally get to have a garden. I have tried over the years but it's hard working long hours and keeping up. I am so looking forward to my small garden this spring. Your enthusiasm is contagious! Thanks dear girl!
Hey hazel how did your garden turn out?
@@larisanoyes3297 my efforts this past fall were dismal. First I had raccoons ruin the first two tubs. So I replanted them and went to Home Depot and bought chicken wire, long zip tied and a small augur to pierce holes in top of pots to attach wire to. That was just for preditors. I live near the gulf and we seemed to have the most rain we've ever had for weeks on end. It would pour then stop a day or so and again. My plants disappeared. I still have lots of onions though.
The funny thing was I still had cell packs with starter plants in them that the rain prevented me from planting out. Amazingly the broccoli has pinky finger size broccoli on them. Not sure if it will be too warm here to put them in more dirt but I will try.
Not giving up though. Soon as this next cold snap passed I will stare spring plants.
I put pots up on saw horse tables and I have some new saw horses so I will try again. Challenging and sad to lose plants but not stopping.
I have time on my hands so it is fun to try.
Sorry for the long answer. Now I have to figure how to store my onions. Never saw any canned so guess I will tie them in stockings if they still make them. Lol!
@@hazelkagey6739 Canned onions are amazing! I cook them down in a crockpot for about 10-12 hours then can them in some beef broth & use in soups and stews in the winter. Look into it, many recipes here on YT!
There is a local garden store near me and they were moving locations so they had a box outside that said FREE and what I saw in the bow made my jaw drop it was full of seeds. When I got home I counted all of them and it was at least $200 worth of seeds there.
Josh Mellow what a blessing!
A friend was at Tractor Supply and they were throwing out all the seeds that hadn't sold. Tons of packages of organic seeds of all kinds. He dumpster-dove and saved them.
What a SCORE!!
Treasure!
Oh wow….never even thought of drilling through an entire stack of cups at once. Genius!!!
My husband also figured that one out for me 😊😊😊
I ordered baker creek seeds because of you.
I started a garden with the help of your teachings.
My grand children and I sowed our seeds and have what I would consider a wonderful little container garden,
especially since I have such a black thumb. THANK YOU so much for your videos of knowledge, both good and bad garden experiences.. We love your sweet family Jess. From me, Tracy Pratt and and my Grandbabies here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast !
I am SO busy with work, grad school, and my four kiddos, but I desperately missed having a garden. I started looking for UA-cam videos to get my fix and found yours by searching for UA-cam vloggers in my zone. You have totally inspired me, and I went ahead and started some seeds. Your enthusiasm reminded me of why I loved my beds and why I needed to make some time for my passion. Thank you!
If you already have ropelights (LEDs in a vinyl tube) for decoration you can double-duty them as heat "mats" under your sprouting trays. The very cheap ones I have are warm but not hot. Love the videos!
You teach better then anyone I’ve ever seen on utube
Timothy Stinson agree...
I start my tomatoes in only half full. Pots. Then I can back fill as they grow.
For leggy tomatoes I wrap a tissue paper roll around the stem and add soil so it will roots.
I really enjoy your videos. I bought cattle fencing and started stacking blocks to build an arbor! I am grateful for your comments about gardening being hard and how tempting it is to give up. Y'all make everything look so easy, and I get so discouraged - like, what's the matter with me? You've renewed my confidence and will get back out and finish that arbor! Thank you so very much for helping so many people become self sufficient and able to sustain ourselves and help our neighbors.
I’ve learned so much from your videos. I had a garden about 3-4 years ago that failed miserably. After watching your channel I have a really nice plan set up, and am even going to build a greenhouse. Here goes 1 more garden in zone 5b Iowa! Thank you so much!
I love the smile on your face when you are talking gardening. Good info on this one.
I made so many of the mistakes starting seeds that you've covered in this video so this is great info for beginner seed starters. And for some encouragement, even though I made those mistakes last spring such as starting seeds in more like garden soil (too dense) and having to replant everything along with not having ample heat for them...I managed to have an amazing garden that gave us so much food. I canned green beans, tomatoes and pickles for days!
Amen! Thats why I always tell people, JUST TRY! You'd be surprised how forgiving gardens are. Seeds WANT to grow! Thats what they are made for lol!
I love that you are addressing the different types of ways to start seeds. I used plastic cups, but switched to paper cups. They're eco friendly, I learned to punch holes from the inside to prevent water from staying inside. Also, when my seedlings are ready to go into the ground, I pull the bottom off and bury the thing about halfway in the soil. This helps to prevent cutworms around the stems, too. By the end of growing season the cups have mostly dissolved.
Great idea. Is it ok to use paper with ink like newspaper?
@@nikkimccoy7203 I'm not sure, I usually just get the little cheapie cups sold at most grocery stores. They usually have a coat of wax on them. Hope this helps.
Being outside in the garden with certain things helps me a lot. It’s therapy, nature and growing, within reason.
I have used cups for a few years I like saving money and time. After I'm done growing in them i clean the cups up and cut them for using them as garden markers. I loved the ideal of using a dril to put holes in the cups you have one smart husband.
“I’m just a gardener” no you are amazing!! I’ve watched a handful of videos and I’ve learned so much! I’ve tried my hand at gardening for years and I’ve had really good harvests but I’ve had even more failures. Learning from you has me so excited for my garden this year and much more excited for next year’s growing season.
Could you make videos on soils, amendments, fertilizers, compost! Also if you can also make video about pest control that would be greatly appreciated. Awesome videos you have by the way!
Just a tip, when seedlings still have two to four leaves and are very leggy, you can plant them much deeper. The cells on the leggy stems have not fully committed to what kind of cell they are and the can develop roots. You can always plant tomatoes much deeper, the stems will grow new roots, fig trees are the same. Any plant that you can lay part of the stem on the soil and it will develop roots, like many vines, you can plant deeper and they grow new roots.
Wow really? Haven't heard that one but that's great news
I am sorry to say but your information is just plain wrong. >>"fig trees are the same"
I have rooted over 500 fig trees and studied the trees for years and the rooting process. I know what I am talking about.
@@zaviahopethomas-woundedsou9848 Well, I have rooted maybe 40-50 figs in all, but I have closely observed that the roots emanate from the node area. I wish I had pictures to show you what my experience has been. In any case, can you point me to some information to counter what I have said? Like a research paper, pictures, anything. I will be happy and thankful to be corrected.
The first and thickest roots start there, but many other roots develop along the rest of the stem. If you see little white or light marks on the stem between the nodes, those become roots. Also if you scratch vertically along the stem many strong new roots come from the bright green cambium layer. These can be some of your first and strongest roots as well. Some varieties are hard to root, like Black Madera and others are much easier to root.
Been binge watching your channel all week... I think we may be soul sisters lol Love your farm and all your super informative vids. I’d really like to just move right in lol... never stop being so inspirational 💜🌱🍅🥒keep on growing girl
I am honestly obsessed with you and your channel! You are so caring for the your youtube viewers and the future. I am so inspired by your work! Right now I am working on a arched trellis for my garden walkway, using your guide as reference. Thanks for being so kind and giving to your viewers.
You are such a joy to watch.
Jess, I heard of Baker Creek Thru you so I ordered $80.00 worth of seeds this year. Love it... Thank you.... Thanks for all the wonderful info you give... You are a blessing... Hugs
On those black containers, white wax pencils (the ones where you pull a thread to rip down the paper to expose more wax) works great.
Great tip!
This is my 1st year starting seeds, such a fun journey!

Personally, I do not recommend peat pots. Either they are so dry its hard to get the soil wet again or they get swampy and moldy and green. They also don't decompose as well as they say they do.
What I have found, is the peat pots take water from the roots. Very sad since I have like 100 of them. I'll never use them again for my plants but may use them when I get to the point of selling extra plants.
Dana Rae Hagberg Totally agree. They don’t decompose.
I'm a newbie and really appreciate the tip on the peat pots. I was thinking of getting them but now I won't! Thanks!
They also wick water away if the tops aren't removed when planting in the garden. Having to tear away those tops with seedlings in them is also a nightmare.
I have found that they don't break down well in my raised beds where I have fewer worms but in my good wormy soil the pots seem to rot as they should. Not sure if it's the worms doing it or just an over all healthier soil ecosystem that does it
Thanks for going to the big box for us. Giving us more options. Thank you for making videos.
This is seriously helpful, especially your explanation of why one might start seeds and different ways to do that. So many videos and articles make it sound really specific and rigid, and you make it seem more normal and not scientifically precise. I appreciate it as a new backyard gardener!
Jess, you're my favorite teacher (besides my mom lol)💕
Another great video ! I love your passion for gardening and it sure is inspiring and motivating
I just love you and all your experience and ideas!!!
I'm starting my first garden this year! This video is so helpful!
The best seed starting video in existence. I’ve followed you for years but as I’m becoming more adventurous with my own garden, you keep coming back to me as the resource every time I want to learn something. Thanks Jess!
Thank you Jess for your time and energy in research and experience in this video.
The sponge analogy is perfect and so helpful! thank you!
I love how thorough you are in your videos! I’ve been an aspiring (and failing) gardener for several years, and I don’t know what it is but I just haven’t been having success growing food. I’ve been very discouraged but now that I’m in a house and have more space, I’m going to try again
I’m right there with you! I have high hopes for this growing season though.
I absolutely adore this sweet woman for taking time out of her day to make these videos. I’ve not even started yet but this is helping me in so many ways. I’ve already subscribed dear.
Jess, your "Sponge" analogy for watering plants was spot on and super easy for almost anyone to readily understand. Great work
Lol! Great minds think alike! I am litterally editing my seed starting video. It's so interesting watching this after mine is already filmed and seeing how many similar tips we have but also how we both focused on different aspects of seed starting. Great video!
Wholesome Roots I can’t wait to see your video too!!!
Out of everyone I follow... you and Jess keep me from totally freaking out 😂 ... I’m still panicky but not nearly as badly as I could be without y’all!
Looking forward to your video!
You and Jess are my go to garden gals! I'm going to be watching for your video, can't wait to see it.
@@denisescull4227 thank you all so much for being so sweet!
That's awesome! Seems all of us growers are starting our seeds right now and making the same videos!! 😃 I'm so excited and can't wait to see what y'all have in store for us! Luckily we can grow a lot all yr. I have quite a bit outside doing really good and still pushing blooms and bearing fruit/peppers. Can't wait for spring, but the summer can be rough here in Florida. Any suggestions on a really good shade cloth that's not too pricy. The bank is not that full at this time.. lol Thanks in advance!
Your videos are so helpful. I’m starting my first above ground boxes and I started my seeds, it’s easy to learn when I’m in the same zone as you. Thank you for all that you do.
Miah is so awesome coming up with efficient ways of doing things to help with the gardening. Great idea on the cup holes! You two are such a great team!
Great video, Jess! You have NO idea how helpful this is to me. Thank you so much for sharing!!!
Thank you for this series!! I moved 4 years ago and haven't had a garden for 5 years. Lord willing, I'll have one this year but seed starting was always a point if contention for me because I always failed. I look forward to putting into practice the knowledge I'll gain from this. Thank you again!!
Oh Wow ! Jess , this was such a great video . I feel more confident than ever watching this. You gave tips on containers that I had never thought of using. I know everyone will we up and planting now, this was too addictive to not and it least TRY! God Bless and thank you so much for sharing so that I can share this with others . 🌿🌼🌻🌾🌶🍅🍓🍽
Hey Jess . So glad you're doing this video. Thank you 💜
Yay so excited for this video to be here. Thanks so much Jess!!
Thank you for sharing this, I’m starting everything from seed this season and wasn’t sure where to start... I have a less than green thumb so this is very helpful and straightforward! 🌱
Hey, thanks soo much for your videos and sharing all your experience. I do love your videos.
I’m from Canada and an avid gardener and we do get some crazy weather here. -35 in the winter to +35 in the summer. So starting plants inside is a must.
But it’s soo nice to see a young family picking up such a valuable gift.
There really aren’t too many of us these days all my friends my age think I’m crazy but I do love it, it’s like speaking another language... if you listen closely enough.
Thanks again for all you share with us.
Cheers:)
So Love You and Your Husband. You are such an inspiration and joy to watch. You are an amazing Teacher. So clear and concise with such a sweet attitude. You’ve got me so excited for the growing season this year😍and so happy to have so many videos lately! 💜from California
My first seed pack I bought from the dollar tree in 2008 still have great germination as of last year. i'll be trying to start the rest this year. I don't buy from the dollar tree after that first pack and now I have a huge seed collection of seeds to start.
Oh mah goodness!!! Years! Probably TEN years I have been biting organic soil and having little luck starting seeds! NEVER thought to use potting mix because the price difference! I am getting SO excited for this season! I can never not garden even though I though I was terrible at it. Things are looking up 😂 Bless you for sharing your gift!
I tell people dirt is cheaper than therapy 😅
Thank you for taking the time and effort to make such informative high quality videos. I appreciate you! 💕
Great video! Seriously, this is one of the easiest seed starting videos I've found. I start my seeds indoors soon for the first time and feel way more confident about it now. Thanks Jess!
Your garden looks like spring to me! I can barely tell where my raised beds are anymore under all the snow here in upstate New York!
I like to start my seeds in recycled k-cups then i transplant to a solo cup. :)
What a beautiful option.
Good morning, Jess! Seeds!!! I am so excited with the prospect of what new life and abundance this growing season is going to bring. Thank you for the encouragement and the bounty of information shared. Love from the desert.
This has got to be my favorite show of all times!!! I would love to talk with her.
It's sounds like she is saying "I bless you" at the end. and you know what, I ain't mad at it. She looks like a Goddess to me🤷🏽♀️
The first picture of her I saw, I thought she looked like Mila Kunis. I think Jess is gorgeous. Inside and out
She is ;)
Hello from Bavaria,
Sorry for my english. I Love your Channel. I‘m the same, buying to much seeds. 🤪 oh this looks nice, i need it. 😅 now i have 50 sorts of tomatos and 25 sorts of Paprika and so on. 😂 But i have not so much space like you. Hope we will see a lot of new videos of you. Bye of like the bavarians say Servus 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
I AM SOOOOOOOOOO THRILLED TO HAVE FOUND YOUR CHANNEL.. OMG... Words will never explain the joy... Thank you for teaching us!! xoxo
I love how passionate you are about gardening. I have that same passion. I feel so blessed that I've recently found your channel so I can start learning more. Thank you so very much for sharing. ❤
Yes, anytime you put anything to grow in a pot and a lot of times even in raised beds, you have to have the vermiculite to keep the soil from compacting. I worked for THD in the garden center for a while. One can buy vermiculite and add it to Garden soil and create Potting soil, I do that in my raised beds because North Florida soil is sand and clay. It is a much cheaper option if you need a large amount of soil.
Wonderful tip! Thank you!!!
You are incredible!! I'm so inspired, thank you so much! You are really helping me understand what to do. It's the middle of winter here in the UK atm, and really want to get my little greenhouse sorted! I think my last frost day is in Feb, and am going to prep the greenhouse for the first time! I'm literally binge watching your videos, you are so easy to understand. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Namaste sister! x
Thanks Hannah!
Yes also binge watching...hehehe....
I live in the Yukon Canada and we have snow from October to mid May. Was cool to see you talk about short growing seasons, I'm always so amazed at your growing season!
It’s a lot of work but it’s so fun and gives you something to grow until spring comes 🤗
I love direct seeding for how easy it is, but I love seed starting for how much extra you can get out of the garden!
Same here!
We are also using cleaned out yogurt cups
I was totally gonna mention that. The rounder bowl shaped ones are the easiest containers to remove a seedling to transplant..
you are such a valuable resource for me since we live so close! I hope everyone finds experienced gardeners in their region to give them advice, it's so helpful!
Hey Jess - thanks so much for this. It took away some of the intimidation about starting seeds and containers. You're inspiring me❤
I have 4X the size garden this year because I NOW know what I'm doing (sorta)
I can't wait till I can start my seeds but I still have some time before I can. March is when I can start which I will. I am zone 6b and now I am planning my garden out. I did plant some lettuce seeds inside under a grow light to see if I can get some greens to grow. Need the garden to thrive. Its my God time and watching those little seeds grow into a beautiful plant that I know has no chemicals in and I can feed my family healthy food.God's blessing to you and yours. ( I wish I could buy some more seeds but this year I have to use what I have from last year so no new ones for me this year) I am blessed
Oh I pray over mine everyday! It is such a miracle!
I spend much my God time in my greenhouse as well lately. Warm, coffee, seedlings, roosters crowing what's not to love
want a greenhouse and chickens. Living in the city right now so I don't have the room for a nice outdoor greenhouse. With God's grace it will happen on day soon. It is my goal to have at least 15 acres and a small home. Blessed by God in all things. God's blessing to you and yours

Yep! I have ordered from Baker Creek, $1 store and Boars! /$1 here in Utah
How was germination? I just got a few packs
I truly appreciate all of this excellent information! I'm so grateful for your tips on growing from seed. Last year the majority of my garden was from seed. You're so right about being able to grow more interesting and various veggies from seed.
I’m starting a garden for the first time this year and I found this video very informative. I love how you showed examples of what you were talking about. Glad I found your channel. Thank you so much!
Watching this in 2020 and am amazed by all the available toilet paper 😂
I just ordered heat mats. Starting indoor seeds for the first time ever.
I have gardened off and on for years, and my favorite thing is seeing the tiny seed sprouts. Once one seed sprouts, I still obsessively check multiple times a day to see if any other seeds sprouted yet.
Just did that for the 2nd time today and it isn't even noon yet!
This is the perfect video for today. We're trapped inside with this freezing weather so im organizing my seeds/ figuring out what to plant. i can't wait for spring!
Thanks Jess for sharing your knowledge and passion for seed starting and gardening.
In Minnesota we start our tomatoes/peppers in feb-march and plant out mid may.
Thanks Tim! I always appreciate when Northerners add comments with explaining because I have no way to speak to that!
Same for us in NH
Question from beginner Michigan gardener. Do I have to do tomatoes and peppers from seed since we can't plant till may normally, or buy already started seedlings,? Also, for the colder plants she talks about like broccoli and kale, do I wait to plant them till later in the season?
jaclyn Richmond Follow MIgardner channel. He is in your same zone. When he starts seedlings is when you should too.
Just something else I've learned... Squash, watermelons, really any vine plants you can sow in ziplocks and they grow nicely. The vines always seem to over take me. It gives the green house effect.
I’m actually going to try this!
I do believe this is the most detailed "Real" information pertaining to said subject I have ever watched. Thank you.
Thankyou Jess you are a great teacher. I watched this last yr was great to go back and be reminded of all these things
Great video and info! I requested to join your Facebook page.
I got a lot of my seed starting supplies on a website called greenhousemegastore.com. they even offer "poo" pots that are made from composted cow manure
Thank you for this great video. You’ve answered a lot of my questions. I usually buy plants every year but I really feel motivated to start with seeds this year. I’ve been watching your videos and I got my baker creek heirloom seeds catalog and I agree with you when you said there is so many fruits , vegetables you can grow and experience that you can’t get at the grocery store.
First of all, I live in AR too, so I'm so glad I found someone that can help me get started and also that I can relate to conditions wise. But I just wanted to say, you are just so wonderful. Thank you for this video, I feel a lot more informed now. You're an actual blessing.
I resisted the urge to buy ALL the seeds...I stopped at 32 packets😂
I have bought about over 110 packets. Not sure I can say I have stopped. :-) I did plant about 70 unique varieties last year (bought twice that many) in an area about 800 Sq. ft. I am possessed.
you have more will power than I did. I went on MIGARDENER several months ago (all their seeds are .99 cents a pack ) SO-I stocked up and got a beautiful gardening bag with my "humongous imagination for growing an acres worth of food" order :O) they had alot of rare seeds.. I had a blast and can't wait to try them all.
@@ahmedhusseinny I ordered over 100 packets this year also. we have an acre that I am tilling daily. trying to decide where I want them to be and compatible with other fun fruits and veggies. I plant ny the moon according to farmers almanac. wishing you tons of luck. God Bless
@thecoronoleo2 I did the same thing! 😂 I don’t have any yard space for a garden this year, I’ve been doing container gardening on my balcony for a few summers but this is the first year I’m dedicating the majority of my containers with food! So the self control really only came bc I only have so many pots/space😂
I stopped at 76 LOL
I’m new to zone 7b and your videos are helping so much! I am originally from Colorado and didn’t realize how early you start planting out here! Here it is nearly April and I am frantically trying to get things planned out. Haha. Thanks for your help!!
