I love that you are addressing the different types of ways to start seeds. I used plastic cups, but switched to paper cups. They're eco friendly, I learned to punch holes from the inside to prevent water from staying inside. Also, when my seedlings are ready to go into the ground, I pull the bottom off and bury the thing about halfway in the soil. This helps to prevent cutworms around the stems, too. By the end of growing season the cups have mostly dissolved.
@@nikkimccoy7203 I'm not sure, I usually just get the little cheapie cups sold at most grocery stores. They usually have a coat of wax on them. Hope this helps.
If you already have ropelights (LEDs in a vinyl tube) for decoration you can double-duty them as heat "mats" under your sprouting trays. The very cheap ones I have are warm but not hot. Love the videos!
I really enjoy your videos. I bought cattle fencing and started stacking blocks to build an arbor! I am grateful for your comments about gardening being hard and how tempting it is to give up. Y'all make everything look so easy, and I get so discouraged - like, what's the matter with me? You've renewed my confidence and will get back out and finish that arbor! Thank you so very much for helping so many people become self sufficient and able to sustain ourselves and help our neighbors.
I love how thorough you are in your videos! I’ve been an aspiring (and failing) gardener for several years, and I don’t know what it is but I just haven’t been having success growing food. I’ve been very discouraged but now that I’m in a house and have more space, I’m going to try again
I love what you're saying about the July lull, and needing something to keep you going. I didn't realize I wasn't alone! I start off great and really struggle in that hot dry period where nothing seems to be happening. You're completely right - seeing the same thing in the store that I'm struggling to grow sucks! That really encouraged me to try things I can't just get from the store.
I made so many of the mistakes starting seeds that you've covered in this video so this is great info for beginner seed starters. And for some encouragement, even though I made those mistakes last spring such as starting seeds in more like garden soil (too dense) and having to replant everything along with not having ample heat for them...I managed to have an amazing garden that gave us so much food. I canned green beans, tomatoes and pickles for days!
Oh mah goodness!!! Years! Probably TEN years I have been biting organic soil and having little luck starting seeds! NEVER thought to use potting mix because the price difference! I am getting SO excited for this season! I can never not garden even though I though I was terrible at it. Things are looking up 😂 Bless you for sharing your gift!
I have used cups for a few years I like saving money and time. After I'm done growing in them i clean the cups up and cut them for using them as garden markers. I loved the ideal of using a dril to put holes in the cups you have one smart husband.
I just love this video. Even though I know all this, it just feeds my soul to go back to the basics and listen to such great teaching about seeds. I love all things seeds lol
Just a tip, when seedlings still have two to four leaves and are very leggy, you can plant them much deeper. The cells on the leggy stems have not fully committed to what kind of cell they are and the can develop roots. You can always plant tomatoes much deeper, the stems will grow new roots, fig trees are the same. Any plant that you can lay part of the stem on the soil and it will develop roots, like many vines, you can plant deeper and they grow new roots.
@@zaviahopethomas-woundedsou9848 Well, I have rooted maybe 40-50 figs in all, but I have closely observed that the roots emanate from the node area. I wish I had pictures to show you what my experience has been. In any case, can you point me to some information to counter what I have said? Like a research paper, pictures, anything. I will be happy and thankful to be corrected.
The first and thickest roots start there, but many other roots develop along the rest of the stem. If you see little white or light marks on the stem between the nodes, those become roots. Also if you scratch vertically along the stem many strong new roots come from the bright green cambium layer. These can be some of your first and strongest roots as well. Some varieties are hard to root, like Black Madera and others are much easier to root.

Aspiring gardening beginner in Canada...I have a community garden at work, so my starts began their life in my office window on top of the wall heaters. So far, this has been working for me. I hope to be able to apply some of these ideas once I have a home garden (but am still in an apartment for now with no green space)!

I know everyone will we up and planting now, this was too addictive to not and it least TRY! God Bless and thank you so much for sharing so that I can share this with others . 🌿🌼🌻🌾🌶🍅🍓🍽
We use low tunnels to start most plants sooner. We made a tube bender and purchased 1/2 inch electric conduit. Bed the hoops to our desired size and cut off the excess. Then put plastic over it and anchor it down. It helped warm the soil faster and protect our plants from unexpected late frosts. This worked for most of our plants and gave us an extended growing season. With tomatoes we wait until the soil temperature is above 65 degrees before planting them outside the green house. We have used a low tunnel to protect them a few times.
My first seed pack I bought from the dollar tree in 2008 still have great germination as of last year. i'll be trying to start the rest this year. I don't buy from the dollar tree after that first pack and now I have a huge seed collection of seeds to start.
I can't wait till I can start my seeds but I still have some time before I can. March is when I can start which I will. I am zone 6b and now I am planning my garden out. just incase anyone else is enjoying this lovely content. the plastic cups is easier to use then the paper, ive done both and getting the plants out of the paper cups is a lot harder then the plastic, and i do have to throw the paper ones away but i can just wash and reuse the plastic (loving your channel btw)
@Roots and Refuge Farm, Thank you so much for this, Jess! I am also "that girl" that LOVES a tomato sandwich in the summer! Because of you and your VLOGS, I have bought seeds from Wild Boar Farm, Baker Creek Seeds, MI Gardener and Hoss Tools! It is a bit late for my season to start most of what I got by seed, but I did get so many different types of beans. I've always done blue lake bush beans. I'm currently growing NINE different kinds, including dry beans. My hubby to be has hereditary high cholesterol. I've been researching Mediterranean cuisine, which is supposed to be awesome for cholesterol. He loves bean soups, so knowing there are more options other than Navy beans and Great Northern beans is so cool! I work anywhere from 40 to 72 hours a week consisting of 10 to 12 hours a day. The grocery store is NOT where I like to spend my time off. I love to take a day off and cook all day. Prep for a week. Freeze meals to simplify my evenings. The inspiration you have brought to me and many others is HUGE! Thank you for opening my eyes to soooooo much more!
Personally, I do not recommend peat pots. Either they are so dry its hard to get the soil wet again or they get swampy and moldy and green. They also don't decompose as well as they say they do.
What I have found, is the peat pots take water from the roots. Very sad since I have like 100 of them. I'll never use them again for my plants but may use them when I get to the point of selling extra plants.
They also wick water away if the tops aren't removed when planting in the garden. Having to tear away those tops with seedlings in them is also a nightmare.
I have found that they don't break down well in my raised beds where I have fewer worms but in my good wormy soil the pots seem to rot as they should. Not sure if it's the worms doing it or just an over all healthier soil ecosystem that does it
View #2 for review! Lol! So much useful info here! 2 months into my very first growing seedlings adventure. I've been binge watching your channel to learn what to do. Thanks for all your instruction! And love for the garden! It's contagious. I loved watching your/Mia's trick on using plastic cups and also drilling drainage holes! This was my first year growing seedlings and the party cup trick was super helpful in keeping my costs manageable this first year. I tried both clear and the red generic brand cups from Walmart. Besides seeing green mold on the outside of my tomato plants in the clear cups, and our weather raining, raining, raining...and more raining all spring, my tomato seedlings grew too tall as they waited to be transplanted out, and the narrower base on the clear cups caused them to topple over more easily than the red cups. As an additional tip, I asked my hubby to use Mia's amazing drill trick, and drill out a hole the size of my index finger so that I can push my seedlings out from the bottom. Thanks for all your tips, Jess! So glad I discovered you this year as I learn how to grow seeds in pots. Good luck in your move! I hope you love your new homestead.
Thank you for sharing this, I’m starting everything from seed this season and wasn’t sure where to start... I have a less than green thumb so this is very helpful and straightforward! 🌱
Yes, anytime you put anything to grow in a pot and a lot of times even in raised beds, you have to have the vermiculite to keep the soil from compacting. I worked for THD in the garden center for a while. One can buy vermiculite and add it to Garden soil and create Potting soil, I do that in my raised beds because North Florida soil is sand and clay. It is a much cheaper option if you need a large amount of soil.
Miah is so awesome coming up with efficient ways of doing things to help with the gardening. Great idea on the cup holes! You two are such a great team!
Question from beginner Michigan gardener. Do I have to do tomatoes and peppers from seed since we can't plant till may normally, or buy already started seedlings,? Also, for the colder plants she talks about like broccoli and kale, do I wait to plant them till later in the season?
New subscriber here. I recently got a job at a greenhouse and have had customers asking me a bunch of questions to which I don't know the answers. I know my way around indoor tropical plants, but know nothing about outdoor gardening. I'm learning so much from your channel. Thank you for providing such clear and thorough content.
I live in Minnesota! We are enduring the polar vortex weather right now. So I am dreaming of my garden of course!! But come March/April I have a table with many seed trays and a grow light lighting up my house. It works because our season is short and I want to get the most out of my garden. I live in the suburbs and my neighbors ask me every summer if there is going to be any grass left in my yard. I expand my garden every year, because there is so much I want to grow. Last year was my first year seed saving!! I am planning on starting a community seed box for people to have seeds to grow. That way I can encourage more people to grow food. Thanks for the videos- your such a inspiration!

This is seriously helpful, especially your explanation of why one might start seeds and different ways to do that. So many videos and articles make it sound really specific and rigid, and you make it seem more normal and not scientifically precise. I appreciate it as a new backyard gardener!
I have gardened off and on for years, and my favorite thing is seeing the tiny seed sprouts. Once one seed sprouts, I still obsessively check multiple times a day to see if any other seeds sprouted yet.
On soil to water content when starting, coming from an amateur mycologist, we call this “field capacity”, the best advice I ever got was “add enough water to substrate that when you squeeze to ring it out, 3-5 drops of water when clenching the soil in your hand is ideal.” I went from mycology into gardening instead of vise versa, this always helped me.
1. It’s cheap, number 2, it’s VERY satisfying, number 3. There are soooo many more choices when you start your own seeds. Number 4, anyone can do it. All you need is a sunny place OR a shelf where you can stick a grow light and a grow container. Every year I start everything under grow lights in my garage. And 5. It’s fun!
Just something else I've learned... Squash, watermelons, really any vine plants you can sow in ziplocks and they grow nicely. The vines always seem to over take me. It gives the green house effect.
I have bought about over 110 packets. Not sure I can say I have stopped. :-) I did plant about 70 unique varieties last year (bought twice that many) in an area about 800 Sq. ft. I am possessed.

Great idea. Is it ok to use paper with ink like newspaper?
@@nikkimccoy7203 I'm not sure, I usually just get the little cheapie cups sold at most grocery stores. They usually have a coat of wax on them. Hope this helps.
You are such a joy to watch.
I love the smile on your face when you are talking gardening. Good info on this one.
Being outside in the garden with certain things helps me a lot. It’s therapy, nature and growing, within reason.
I’m right there with you! I have high hopes for this growing season though.
Amen! Thats why I always tell people, JUST TRY! You'd be surprised how forgiving gardens are. Seeds WANT to grow! Thats what they are made for lol!
Thanks Jess for sharing your knowledge and passion for seed starting and gardening.
I tell people dirt is cheaper than therapy 😅
Jess, you're my favorite teacher (besides my mom lol)💕
I start my tomatoes in only half full. Pots. Then I can back fill as they grow.
I AM SOOOOOOOOOO THRILLED TO HAVE FOUND YOUR CHANNEL.. OMG... Words will never explain the joy... Thank you for teaching us!! xoxo
Another great video ! I love your passion for gardening and it sure is inspiring and motivating
I just love you and all your experience and ideas!!!
This was so so SO SO helpful!!!!! I made SO MANY MISTAKES and am now learning from you what I did wrong. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!
Wow really? Haven't heard that one but that's great news
I am sorry to say but your information is just plain wrong. >>"fig trees are the same"
I have rooted over 500 fig trees and studied the trees for years and the rooting process. I know what I am talking about.
I am honestly obsessed with you and your channel! You are so caring for the your youtube viewers and the future. I am so inspired by your work! Right now I am working on a arched trellis for my garden walkway, using your guide as reference. Thanks for being so kind and giving to your viewers.
Could you make videos on soils, amendments, fertilizers, compost! Also if you can also make video about pest control that would be greatly appreciated. Awesome videos you have by the way!
Hi Jess, My name is Mary and I am in Colorado. We have a young family and I just built our first raised beds to start growing our own food. Your videos are so inspirational and helpful to me. I wish you lived closer because I want to hug you and invite you over for a cup of coffee and pick your brain!
Anyways, I wanted to send some love back and give a huge thank you for your videos and knowledge. Thanks for being a garden mentor 💙
Been binge watching your channel all week... I think we may be soul sisters lol Love your farm and all your super informative vids. I’d really like to just move right in lol... never stop being so inspirational 💜🌱🍅🥒keep on growing girl
Your enthusiasm is fantastic!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and encouragement!
Thank you for this series!! I moved 4 years ago and haven't had a garden for 5 years. Lord willing, I'll have one this year but seed starting was always a point if contention for me because I always failed. I look forward to putting into practice the knowledge I'll gain from this. Thank you again!!
I do believe this is the most detailed "Real" information pertaining to said subject I have ever watched. Thank you.
Jess, I heard of Baker Creek Thru you so I ordered $80.00 worth of seeds this year. Love it... Thank you.... Thanks for all the wonderful info you give... You are a blessing... Hugs
I'm buying seeds RIGHT NOW!!!!!!! Never had anyone break it down this simple. Truly appreciate you.
The sponge analogy is perfect and so helpful! thank you!
The best seed starting video in existence. I’ve followed you for years but as I’m becoming more adventurous with my own garden, you keep coming back to me as the resource every time I want to learn something. Thanks Jess!
I'm starting my first garden this year! This video is so helpful!
Glad I found you. I'm enjoying your videos. Just moved into a new house and starting all gardening from scratch. Fayetteville here. Thanks for the info and inspiration.
You are incredible!! I'm so inspired, thank you so much! You are really helping me understand what to do. It's the middle of winter here in the UK atm, and really want to get my little greenhouse sorted! I think my last frost day is in Feb, and am going to prep the greenhouse for the first time! I'm literally binge watching your videos, you are so easy to understand. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Namaste sister! x
Thanks Hannah!
Yes also binge watching...hehehe....
I absolutely adore this sweet woman for taking time out of her day to make these videos. I’ve not even started yet but this is helping me in so many ways. I’ve already subscribed dear.
Hey, thanks soo much for your videos and sharing all your experience. I do love your videos.
I’m from Canada and an avid gardener and we do get some crazy weather here. -35 in the winter to +35 in the summer. So starting plants inside is a must.
But it’s soo nice to see a young family picking up such a valuable gift.
There really aren’t too many of us these days all my friends my age think I’m crazy but I do love it, it’s like speaking another language... if you listen closely enough.
Thanks again for all you share with us.
Cheers:)
I appreciate the details you provided here. I'm in 7b and I'm anxious about starting now! I'll take a deep breath and chill😉
Your videos are so helpful. I’m starting my first above ground boxes and I started my seeds, it’s easy to learn when I’m in the same zone as you. Thank you for all that you do.
Aspiring gardening beginner in Canada...I have a community garden at work, so my starts began their life in my office window on top of the wall heaters. So far, this has been working for me. I hope to be able to apply some of these ideas once I have a home garden (but am still in an apartment for now with no green space)!
Oh Wow ! Jess , this was such a great video . I feel more confident than ever watching this. You gave tips on containers that I had never thought of using.
This is the most helpful video on seed starting I've ever seen...
I can't wait till I can start my seeds but I still have some time before I can. March is when I can start which I will. I am zone 6b and now I am planning my garden out. I did plant some lettuce seeds inside under a grow light to see if I can get some greens to grow. Need the garden to thrive. Its my God time and watching those little seeds grow into a beautiful plant that I know has no chemicals in and I can feed my family healthy food.God's blessing to you and yours. ( I wish I could buy some more seeds but this year I have to use what I have from last year so no new ones for me this year) I am blessed
Oh I pray over mine everyday! It is such a miracle!
I spend much my God time in my greenhouse as well lately. Warm, coffee, seedlings, roosters crowing what's not to love
want a greenhouse and chickens. Living in the city right now so I don't have the room for a nice outdoor greenhouse. With God's grace it will happen on day soon. It is my goal to have at least 15 acres and a small home. Blessed by God in all things. God's blessing to you and yours
@@homesteadblessings8886 blessings to you as well🙂
I live in the Yukon Canada and we have snow from October to mid May. Was cool to see you talk about short growing seasons, I'm always so amazed at your growing season!
On those black containers, white wax pencils (the ones where you pull a thread to rip down the paper to expose more wax) works great.
Great tip!
This is exactly what I needed! So happy to have found your page!
For leggy tomatoes I wrap a tissue paper roll around the stem and add soil so it will roots.
I'm sitting here crying right now. That was the most touching, moving, beautiful moment! Congrats on Baby Ruth and Billy
Lol! Great minds think alike! I am litterally editing my seed starting video. It's so interesting watching this after mine is already filmed and seeing how many similar tips we have but also how we both focused on different aspects of seed starting. Great video!
Wholesome Roots I can’t wait to see your video too!!!
Out of everyone I follow... you and Jess keep me from totally freaking out 😂 ... I’m still panicky but not nearly as badly as I could be without y’all!
Looking forward to your video!
You and Jess are my go to garden gals! I'm going to be watching for your video, can't wait to see it.
@@denisescull4227 thank you all so much for being so sweet!
That's awesome! Seems all of us growers are starting our seeds right now and making the same videos!! 😃 I'm so excited and can't wait to see what y'all have in store for us! Luckily we can grow a lot all yr. I have quite a bit outside doing really good and still pushing blooms and bearing fruit/peppers. Can't wait for spring, but the summer can be rough here in Florida. Any suggestions on a really good shade cloth that's not too pricy. The bank is not that full at this time.. lol Thanks in advance!
“I’m just a gardener” no you are amazing!! I’ve watched a handful of videos and I’ve learned so much! I’ve tried my hand at gardening for years and I’ve had really good harvests but I’ve had even more failures. Learning from you has me so excited for my garden this year and much more excited for next year’s growing season.
I love direct seeding for how easy it is, but I love seed starting for how much extra you can get out of the garden!
Same here!
I love your videos. You dont just put out basic info that most already know, you go in depth and teach me things I had no idea about. Thank you for that!
Glad you like them!
We are also using cleaned out yogurt cups
I was totally gonna mention that. The rounder bowl shaped ones are the easiest containers to remove a seedling to transplant..
just incase anyone else is enjoying this lovely content. the plastic cups is easier to use then the paper, ive done both and getting the plants out of the paper cups is a lot harder then the plastic, and i do have to throw the paper ones away but i can just wash and reuse the plastic (loving your channel btw)
It's sounds like she is saying "I bless you" at the end. and you know what, I ain't mad at it. She looks like a Goddess to me🤷🏽♀️
The first picture of her I saw, I thought she looked like Mila Kunis. I think Jess is gorgeous. Inside and out
She is ;)
@Roots and Refuge Farm, Thank you so much for this, Jess!
Dana Rae Hagberg Totally agree. They don’t decompose.
I'm a newbie and really appreciate the tip on the peat pots. I was thinking of getting them but now I won't! Thanks!
They also wick water away if the tops aren't removed when planting in the garden. Having to tear away those tops with seedlings in them is also a nightmare.
I have found that they don't break down well in my raised beds where I have fewer worms but in my good wormy soil the pots seem to rot as they should. Not sure if it's the worms doing it or just an over all healthier soil ecosystem that does it
Jess, your "Sponge" analogy for watering plants was spot on and super easy for almost anyone to readily understand. Great work
Your garden looks like spring to me! I can barely tell where my raised beds are anymore under all the snow here in upstate New York!
So lucky you have a green house!! Thanks for sharing
Wonderful tip! Thank you!!!
Miah is so awesome coming up with efficient ways of doing things to help with the gardening. Great idea on the cup holes! You two are such a great team!
In Minnesota we start our tomatoes/peppers in feb-march and plant out mid may.
Thanks Tim! I always appreciate when Northerners add comments with explaining because I have no way to speak to that!
Same for us in NH
Question from beginner Michigan gardener. Do I have to do tomatoes and peppers from seed since we can't plant till may normally, or buy already started seedlings,? Also, for the colder plants she talks about like broccoli and kale, do I wait to plant them till later in the season?
jaclyn Richmond Follow MIgardner channel. He is in your same zone. When he starts seedlings is when you should too.
I have 4X the size garden this year because I NOW know what I'm doing (sorta)
I like to start my seeds in recycled k-cups then i transplant to a solo cup. :)
What a beautiful option.
I learned so much from this video. I want to start saving my seeds and this is exceptional information. Thank you so much for sharing this information. God bless.
Hello from Bavaria,
Sorry for my english. I Love your Channel. I‘m the same, buying to much seeds. 🤪 oh this looks nice, i need it. 😅 now i have 50 sorts of tomatos and 25 sorts of Paprika and so on. 😂 But i have not so much space like you. Hope we will see a lot of new videos of you. Bye of like the bavarians say Servus 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
This is seriously helpful, especially your explanation of why one might start seeds and different ways to do that. So many videos and articles make it sound really specific and rigid, and you make it seem more normal and not scientifically precise. I appreciate it as a new backyard gardener!
We use Solo cups with a X cut in the bottom
Thank you kindly for sharing your knowledge with us. I appreciate you beautiful. God bless your bounty.❤☀️🙏
I just ordered heat mats. Starting indoor seeds for the first time ever.
I have gardened off and on for years, and my favorite thing is seeing the tiny seed sprouts. Once one seed sprouts, I still obsessively check multiple times a day to see if any other seeds sprouted yet.
Just did that for the 2nd time today and it isn't even noon yet!
Our Dollar Tree has seeds 4pks/$1. Most of my seeds came from the dollar tree.
Simply RaeAnn and some if them are Heirloom!!!
All my seeds are from burpee.😂
I for got the Dollar store have seeds!🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Yep! I have ordered from Baker Creek, $1 store and Boars! /$1 here in Utah
How was germination? I just got a few packs
I’m actually going to try this!
Thankyou Jess you are a great teacher. I watched this last yr was great to go back and be reminded of all these things
I resisted the urge to buy ALL the seeds...I stopped at 32 packets😂
I have bought about over 110 packets. Not sure I can say I have stopped. :-) I did plant about 70 unique varieties last year (bought twice that many) in an area about 800 Sq. ft. I am possessed.
you have more will power than I did. I went on MIGARDENER several months ago (all their seeds are .99 cents a pack ) SO-I stocked up and got a beautiful gardening bag with my "humongous imagination for growing an acres worth of food" order :O) they had alot of rare seeds.. I had a blast and can't wait to try them all.
@@ahmedhusseinny I ordered over 100 packets this year also. we have an acre that I am tilling daily. trying to decide where I want them to be and compatible with other fun fruits and veggies. I plant ny the moon according to farmers almanac. wishing you tons of luck. God Bless
@thecoronoleo2 I did the same thing! 😂 I don’t have any yard space for a garden this year, I’ve been doing container gardening on my balcony for a few summers but this is the first year I’m dedicating the majority of my containers with food! So the self control really only came bc I only have so many pots/space😂
I stopped at 76 LOL
It’s a lot of work but it’s so fun and gives you something to grow until spring comes 🤗
Great video and info! I requested to join your Facebook page.
Wow! This was wildly helpful, and it explains why I’ve had flops with my seeds. I can’t wait to start my seeds this summer. So many great tips. Been loving your channel
I got a lot of my seed starting supplies on a website called greenhousemegastore.com. they even offer "poo" pots that are made from composted cow manure
I’m glad I came across your channel. Started my container garden due to the whole supply chain breakdown and COVID19. You taught me a lot and realize that I did a bunch of things wrong.
We were fortunate to have stocked up on seeds back in early February when I was watching the CCP virus unfold.
You got me and hubby inspired and totally love your whole garden set up.
Many blessings and much Aloha 🌴🤙🏽🌋
Watching this in 2020 and am amazed by all the available toilet paper 😂
