- Katie is our newest freeflight student with her female 6 year old blue and gold macaw Mia. She has been working on indoor training for months via online consultations with us. Unlimited in-home consultations are included in our freeflight course, and so Dave went to go see if Mia was ready for her first outdoor flights yet!
Everything looked great via video, but this is why our freeflight course is personally coached and some of it is done in person... there are just some things you cannot see on video. We also make sure every one of our students takes their first outdoor flights with us present!

I just realized a stunning difference in you two’s editing and videoing technique/styles lol. Normally I come to birdtricks to have it on in the background, ii just let it auto play and binge watch. But most of it is Jamie’s content, more telling than showing (which is easier to listen to) and she is amazing at that. She can articulate what she means in a way that’s easy to understand. And then seeing some of your videos, it’s almost all showing instead of telling- and that’s essential to learning. You guys are like total opposites but also so much alike? Together y’all work perfectly, because each one of you have your own unique strengths. And Capri is the spunky little mix of you both lol.
YES! I mentioned this comment in my comment because you are so right - two different styles, neither of which are better than the other. Both are needed which is why they, as trainers, do so great together because they notice and can articulate different things. I'm, for one, just happy that they keep putting out such amazing content, and hope that some of the particularly rude comments don't put them off of continuing to create!
Not gonna lie, Capri is my favorite to watch with the birds. She is amazing with Bondi and Bandit.

Kudos to Katie for her care and commitment to her bird. All bird's should have owners who love them so much!
Wow! So normally I read the comments before watching a video just to get a sense of what I'm watching and I was expecting this to be NOTHING about a macaw and the music to be blaring down my speakers according to some of these comments - none of which I found to be true by the way. It's evident that this was more Dave's thing rather than Jamie's, and I think it speaks to two different styles - Jamie likes to TELL us things and Dave likes to SHOW us things (I read a comment that mentioned that and she was spot on!). This is more a visual show of what happened with Mia (who IS a macaw and who would've gotten lost had they not caught the issue in time...so how is this clickbait?)
Jamie and Dave produce hundreds of videos with quality content that is both entertaining and educational (including this one - it could save a bird's life outside!). So maybe you don't like Dave's style as much, you are welcome to have that opinion, but to call it "click bait" and "awful" is just flat out rude to the couple who are behind all this content. They have feelings and put a lot of effort into making videos for you - don't like ONE of them? Just move on. Maybe send them a nice "hey love your content but just had some suggestions" message or something.
I, personally, PREFER the show method and really enjoyed this video. That doesn't mean I go hate bash all of the ones that are more "tell" style. Next time you leave a comment, imagine yourself on the other side of it.

Loved the video!! I really enjoyed the change up of style - after working with you and Dave in person I can see how Dave is reflected in this video :) Back when you both came to FL for us we almost lost Tango too by thinking he was ready to go outside, but you both spotted his obsession with the tree and not us! Ended up being another 2 months before he was ACTUALLY ready to fly. Love what you do, love the free education, and contrary to some of the contents on here - loved the music!
I work with kids, not birds, but I love how their behavior changes tell me I’m doing the right thing. Humans have what we call extinction bursts, where when a behavior stops accomplishing what we want it to accomplish, we up the intensity of the behavior to see if that works. If you continue not to reward a behavior, the extinction burst will pass and the behavior will diminish. (Y’all probably already know this, but I want to give some context to the next statement in case people don’t know.) When I suspect a behavior is for attention, I ignore it, and the screaming gets louder or turns into swatting, I feel a sense of satisfaction that i am on the right track. I think you felt the same thing when Mia started having the fly offs and then quickly calmed down. So satisfying! Well done Dave for catching it and Katie for changing her behavior so quickly. 👏👏👏

I think Katie has a good personality and poise for the camera and UA-cam. She speaks very clearly and with intent. Plus her personality is bubbly and genuine. You see her full spectrum of feelings in her face and in her voice but without her loosing that ability to talk clearly. She totes needs her own channel :P

I'd also like to share my response to the music. I enjoy music in videos, and I especially love what you've chosen for your freeflight video segments - for me it really elevates the viewing experience to another level.
I think whether to have music at all, or what music to choose, depends on whether you see your video as primarily educational or primarily entertainment. These days there is a lot of music added to UA-cam videos, for fear that the video would otherwise be boring, and that viewers would otherwise click off. Just speaking for myself, I am always glued to the screen when watching your content (which is always so well edited and presented, by 2 talented communicators!) I never just have your videos on in the background, and your videos are NEVER, EVER boring. Your training videos are my absolute favourite.
During a training video it's not like watching a freeflight video, where i might just lie back and chill (entertainment! - bring on the music!). When watching a training video I imagine myself in the room with you guys, I watch the bird and everyone closely, try to work out when you are going to click the clicker or what your responses are going to be. I'm concentrating -- which is why I found the music in this one distracting. To be fair, hearing is the primary sensory channel for me, so l can't internally "switch off" music like some people can. Dave, I'm guessing you're more of a sensory multi-tasker - would you sometimes/often have music going in the room when you are training your own birds, perhaps you have headphones on sometimes? just wondering.
But the right music might actually aid viewer concentration in an educational video. Could I suggest you experiment with music that is lighter in feel and more upbeat? i think part of my problem with the music was that the energy was so heavy and stressed-feeling.
I do commend you guys for experimenting with your formats as you have done lately and trying different ways to present your content!

Gosh i learned so much watching this. I need to make sure Davinci is desensitized and make sure no shoulder. I have been letting him on because he comes off easy but I think i will stop it for now. Great job with Mia Katie!

So glad I have a non spooky parrot. We did a costume party gig Saturday night with 200 people, heaps of noise, crazy big drunken party. She was so calm and quiet, let 50+ people pat her and only once spooked when someone went to hug me and didn't see her! I feel blessed. She was on a harness line, but I hope to eventually free fly her ❤🐦
Hopefully one day I can afford to be a free flight student. But not currently, on a performance artist income lol

A guy in vegas did this in front of a crowd of people in a show. The
birds he had were beautiful, one snow white and mixed with powder blue.
The birds take off from his arms on both sides at the same time. They
flew forward across this auditorium spaced apart, in perfect formation.
And with that same orchestrated linearity, the birds turn near the and
of the place, and cross over each other in the middle, just like your
airshow pilots in planes. Now the birds are flying back to the stage
over these people in the audience towards the guy with both arms
extended. Again, the birds are in perfect formation. Then, the birds
land on the opposite arms of this guy that they took off from. Both at
the same time. Never seen anything like it before. Never seen anything
like it since.

I never would have thought that letting your bird perch on your shoulder often would make it more fearful. Definitely interested in learning the reasons behind that and how to discourage it while still making the bird feel safe!
Shoulders are more stable and higher up and much closer to you. Makes more sense when you notice these things.

Definitely informative and look forward to the "no shoulder" segment. A question about smaller green cheek parakeets that need some desensitization, do you think it is alright to firmly hold them by the feet as well? Not sure how much their little feet can take but wanted to know if you have tried this or have experience with the smaller parrots. I'm totally prepared to take the long time way to work through their issues but could perhaps do a little more if the feet control was safe... thanks much! Great Stuff!!
Never would of thought of the idea but a batting cage is the perfect idea to start training in. I tried going outside with my parrot but to many planes and and stuff so he was always getting spooked and don’t want to be outside unless he’s in his cage sitting outside with me on the porch
I have a 17 week old GCC who is also afraid of everything! I call her my Velcro bird & I'm trying to get her used to how life is without being spooked by everything. Funny thing is though she does go to people she doesn't know with no problem, like the vet & one of my friends, but when she's home with just me & my other birds, she spooks easily.

That’s a big world out there! Did she ever get to sit on perches out side your home! Our birds had outdoor perches and watched everything! We always knew when prey birds were flying around, because they made a huge racket!

So I'm more familiar with raptors, but a lot of the same training techniques are involved (especially with something foundational like "don't be afraid if I walk around and grab things." My question is how are you holding her on your fist? Falconers use jesses, but parrot legs aren't built for that to be safe. Is it just your thumb over her toes that's holding her there?
Notice she is working with her bird in a ball fields great idea . THe netting is to big for my GCC , he would fit through. any suggestion of other way to work of flight training if you dont have your own enclosed area

I do successful boomerang flight with my budgie, even putting a distraction during the flight (my dad's mirror, which my bird loves). My goal is to get him to free fly, to show you that budgies are super underrated and CAN free fly. People are too scared for no reason. Budgies can overcome their fears too.

I have an 8 month old male cockatiel! He’s the cutest little guy and beginning to talk... he interacts with us and is out of his cage most of the day and when we put him he bites our fingers when he steps up and he’s not happy! How do we stop him from biting!

Katie is such a nice person. ^^ Her enthusiasm for her bird is so wonderful. I myself do not own a bird (yet), but the idea is growing on me. But that is something that also throws me off a little bit, because all the people in your videos (including you obviously) seem like thy always were fascinated by birds and always wanted to own a bird. Well.. now that I think of it.. Jamie wasn't a bird person either until she met you, right? So maybe there is something to it afterall..
P.S.: Please stop using the clickbait titles.. you don't need them.. I'd watch every video anyway, but I am a bit disappointed when it gets clear that it was just clickbait. And in this case it doesn't suit you in any way, because it makes the audience think that you actually did something wrong in preparing for free flight.

So I recently just got a 3 month old Greenwing macaw and I have a galah cockatoo but I don’t have experience with introducing birds to each other.
I was wondering if you / anyone could give me some advice on how to help them tolerate each other in the same room. My galah is very territorial and I don’t want them to fight or get hurt. Please can ANYONE help or respond to me.
They have done a few videos on this, you should look through their channel. I'm not Jamie or Dave obviously but I'd introduce them in the room in your house that your galah is least fond of/ the least territorial of and make sure they can't get at each other. I'd probably do it in said room with your new baby in it's cage and your Galah out as the baby will probably be the "bottom dog" so to speak at least until it reaches maturity and you don't want your Galah to feel threatened or jealous and what not. I wouldn't do it the way Jamie did it with her birds that already had issues with each other, as you might just create issues if you pop 2 birds that don't know each other together like that, one of which being a Galah and not a macaw and the other a baby, as opposed to her birds that already had issues with each other. I'd probably just reinforce good behavior/your Galah ignoring the baby. Really depends on how territorial your Galah is though, wouldn't expect he/she to immediately try and get at the baby but I don't know your bird, so.

My birds ok with my hand just when she sees my brother she hides behind my head, understandably because he likes to put her in her cage and yell at her for no reason. And thats why she attacks him whenever possible
How old is the bird? Must b a baby. Mines does the same he is 3 months..he is a expert in the house..but outside he comes when he want so I use a harness or rope on his leg since he doesn't respond automatically yet... I just think since he is a baby he wants to play around n not come vs an older mature bird who doesn't care to play much but idk..
Can conure birds eat tuna fish packed in water a small amount I can't find it anywhere could you please help me
Google "can parrots have tuna" literally the first result is what you're looking for, lol. It says in moderation it's fine but it's high in Mercury so they suggest safer options like salmon or codfish.

Yes, but don't give it more than one a week if that. It's not totally necessary but fun to add variety in the diet.

Do birds have issues with hats the way dogs do?
Many do, yeah. Different makeup or hair color or fingernail polish can also freak them out. My parrotlet was terrified when I used henna to dye my hair a much brighter red, and when I got acrylic nails done for a job interview they scared her at first. And I'm very lucky, Sweetpea is a very confident bird and calms down really easily. For some birds, hats or new furniture or strange things can bother them so much that they'll scream until you remove the item from their environment, or even start plucking :( That's why exposing and desensitizing your birds to many experiences in a safe way as babies is so important. If it's not started early, it's much harder to do. Both my birds are rescues and my cockatiel is terrified of everything.

I hate to be a jerk but the music really, really isn't helping. It's very loud and the voices are very soft, so I am adjusting volume up everytime I actually want to hear what's going on, and then back down when the music lambasts me.

Val Prem they are working on the right size tail mounts for “medium sized parrots” now. Currently we have the telemetry for medium sized. Claudia managed to get gps on one, but ran into an issue. It’s close! They may have a solution now.
