I was nodding away like a demented donkey throughout all your talk. The part about music being a controllable space for you and a survival mechanism, is the same for me too. Also the part about eye contact is a big one, plus I used to get really scared of open spaces, e.g. walking into a store with a large open long floor space leading to a counter, with staff stood behind it and staring at you as you attempted to walk the floor to reach the counter. That used to be agonising hell and make my anxiety levels explode. I did manage to overcome this eventually although in recent years due to being alone, it has returned a little. Having a big music project to focus on is a fantastic thing, and can make you feel a total boss and seriously proud of yourself.

Yeah dude...I was sitting here finishing your sentences the entire time. I've never had a hard time communicating with other people though. I'm a pretty good social chameleon, actually. But I totally have the whole hyper concentration on a singular subject thing, to the point where I have pretty much excelled at whatever I set my mind to without much outside teaching, input or guidance. In fact, I kind of eschew help to a fault sometimes. I think I also tend to be a dominant force in any creative process I try to share with others, and if I find I have to take a back seat, I have difficulty. Very interesting hearing about your experience. I was born in 77 and my parents divorced when I was 9. So similar arc of biography there as well.

Brad, you act like you got Asperger’s about 100% of the time. This is not a compliment. Seek guidance.

I get really anxious, nervous and struggle with every day interactions with people in shops etc. However when on stage playing or singing, I have no anxiety or nerves at all. I can talk fine providing other people just accept me as I am, but if they expect me to do all the other standard extra steps involved in social interaction, that is where I come stuck.

Thank you for sharing. When you were discussing performing and the separation between the audience as a form of controlled communication it struck me that this video is also a similar technique. Maybe this is part of the reason you are compelled to make videos; to communicate and share at a distance.

After 2 failed marriages and a whole heck of a bunch of setbacks I’m finally coming to terms with being an Aspie myself. I picked up some Valerian Root to try based on your suggestion. I’ll see what happens. I’m involved in a Facebook group for creatives on the spectrum and it’s really heartbreaking to see these guys struggle so bad. Me? I’m finally gaining some ground in life. We shall see what happens I guess.

  • @alm000

I'm not an Aspie but I have my own explanation of the eye contact thing. It is a hyper awareness, in my case I don't make eye contact with others not because I'm trying to hide something rather because they are. I look away so I don't "see it in their eyes". The less I speculate about a feeling someone gave me the better, LOL
On a different note I am diabetic and because of it it's hard to maintain a certain social structure like I once did. Since I've been this way I find myself realizing that in my life I've seen two sides of the coin rather than one like most others. My younger self knew life as a normal person only being able to be empathetic to those with social or health issues but never truly being able to relate. As my older self I've been able to experience that other side of the coin. Of course this is not exclusive to me in any way, I mean older folks have experience in it naturally and gradually, my change came fast when one day I was one way and the next another, not unlike a nymph, LOL
I appreciate the time you took to talk about this, I didn't know much about it till now, Thanks. I can definite relate to a lot of the stuff you mentioned. I will say I'm a bit jealous as there are no special abilities to my disease, only disciplines, LOL :)

About the eye contact, I still have a bit of trouble making eye contact but it’s definitely gotten better over the years. I used to not be able to look people in the face while talking. However, thank you so much for making this video! Music has also helped me reach out and connect with people. Music and Performing on stage has been a very useful tool for feeling good about myself and gaining self confidence. Before I discovered my love for music I felt “lost” among people

Totally feel you on the internet being a resource to figuring out one's conditions/syndromes. I have an eye condition not known by many people, and relied so greatly on the internet in helping me to get a diagnosis and figure out how to work out daily treatments. The condition is recurrent corneal erosion, and basically means that I suffer from chronic dry eyes, resulting in my corneas not adhering to the surface of my eye underneath. When sleeping, this can result in the cornea sticking to the eyelid, causing intense pain. Would never have known how how to communicate about this properly with my optometrist and wouldn't have the treatments I now do every day to manage my episodes. Thanks for such an educational and personal video Matthew!

@@fuzzcityrecords432 For me it is hyper sensitivity to my surroundings and other people which is why despite my doctor diagnosing me as Aspie, I felt the HSP (Hyper Sensitive Person) to be a better fit. However the social cues and subtle interactions that make all types of relationships work are a mystery. I sorta understand the idea behind it, but less able to put it into practice in real life.
