- When Brian Scudamore told his parents he was dropping out of college to become a full time junk collector, they told him he was throwing away his future. At just 19, he set out to build his own business. The idea for a junk removal service came to Scudamore while staring at a pile of garbage in a McDonald’s parking lot. Today he’s created a multi-million brand and through his unconventional success, he’s become the poster child of encouraging anyone thinking about starting a business to “just get out there and start one.”

How 1-800-Got-Junk Became A $500 Million Business
This man helped start my Dad's tarp company 15 years ago. They were his biggest client for US Tarp
Still in dads business?
congrats!
“Take care of your employees, and they’ll take care of your customers”. Told my last job that, and they ignored my for the last week.
Reason #1 why I left my old company. Now working for the competition where they actually look after their staff
=(
Happy employees work harder and are happy while doing it and also keep the customers happy too!
A lot of companies don't believe that- they see their employees as a means to a profit, not the people who make their profit.
I really don't understand, why Bosses yell at their employees if they do few mistakes as if the they are perfect, I think they don't realize that they have leveraged their employees and are making profits just because of the people working for them..
I think what I love the most about this guy is his chill and being so humble. He starts with “I started this business” and then you never here him say I again. It’s always We did this and We built that. It’s not laboured, it rolls naturally. Difference between a Boss and a Leader!! Never heard a bad thing about him yet.
Wut? A company which is not some social media BS app and does concrete things in the real world?
Haha right or some gig economy app 🤷 like another Uber
Shhh🤫 Let all these other people continue developing their apps, I like the lack of competition in service based business.
S T you’re joking if you think uber isn’t a legitimate business
@@matthewmorris5128 It is. But something is wrong with their business model. They seem to be having trouble making consistent profit.
Robert Cleft every business has problems/doesn’t mean their run right/takes years to get out of debt. but that doesn’t change the fact that uber isn’t just some app like flappy bird, it solves a real world problem
I use to work for 1800 got junk in Oahu. It was a fun and enjoyable time. Lots of cool and free stuff.
they couldn't make it there- not enough freeway overpasses
@@tommurphy4307 what do you mean?
I started my own Junk Business after reading about Brian online.. Me and my Fiancee had a $500 utility trailer and a dream. 18 months later our lives are completely different. We've obviously got goals of growing to his level and it's definitely inspirational to watch this and see the potential future of our business. I have no doubt we'll be there one day, and it would be an absolute honor to meet Brian S someday.
Good luck to you guys! Nothing like starting your own empire.. one day you will be able to have something to pass down to your kids 💪🏾
I had the pleasure to meet Brian many times and he’s a true model of entrepreneur. Super humble guy and always open for guests to come visit their office and take a look at their culture. An awesome example how to grow a values based company.
Blue collar millionaire......I wish he was able to do the show
I believe he did. Season 1 episode 5.
@Just DoIt What does blue collar and white collar exactly means?
Nuclear Film Studio blue collar is uneducated skilled labour, white collar is mostly management and administration of business and marketing
This guy, he's great. Sounds like an awesome person and boss.
Those 1800-got-junk trucks are now all over Australia as well.
Same with Canada. All of the brands
are they parked on all the freeway bridges there, too? or maybe they found another free spot?
This is what my boss always says! Your team comes first, it doesn't matter what you're business is as long as you are working with the right people.
That is why Chick-Fil-A is so successful. Great employees.
"I drive a *little* Toyota pick-up truck"
Me a European: *LITTLE?!?!*
Yeah In America, that Tacoma is pretty small compared to others like the Tundra, F150, RAM 1500, and Silverado
@@kitarp5202 and the cybertruck ofc
@@xue1379 yeah basically every modern truck is bigger then the tacoma lol
If Humility/Humble was a person
I have a whole new appreciation for the blue collar profession. Great inspiration!
For those wondering yes they do resell, donate and recycle as much as they can. It varies from franchise to franchise what they do the most. I worked there for 3 years!
why WOULDNT any hauler do that when he has to pay to get rid of the stuff otherwise?
I have been working for this company in Franchise for 14 years. I was so inspired and learned so much (Business wise) that I opened a doggy day care business thats profitable in 2 and a half year of being open. Honestly best decision was apply and work for the franchise I work. I still work there currently 3 days a week and 4 at my Business. WORK WORK WORK. I make sacrifices today so I can live comfortably when I am older.
you better just enjoy each day.
Bezos should learn business ethics from this guy.
If Bezos did, he certainly wouldn't be worth over a $100 billion. This guy believes in people, Bezos like Musk and a number of others, would rather automate everything to bring down costs and increase "growth".
If he did u wouldnt buy from amazon because it woukd be expensive. As u wont buy 3 dolars shirts because they wouldnt be made in bangladesh were people gain 0,4 dolars per day
Its we with our consumer choices that created amazon, new yorker and primark, and such
Really ? Bezos don’t need too lol
Max Troy Automation is inevitable.. instead we should find ways to raise future generations to fit the jobs of the future (and provide a UBI) so people can stay alive during the transition
"I dropped outta school to start a business". This line as been used alot but rich individuals, i feel like when they do drop out and they feel like there's no other option but to chase a dream. It's better to fail than to never have tried at all.
Honestly, this was inspiring, the exact motivation I needed!!
I thought I knew everything about running business until I actually started a business. Learning about business means nothing until you run a business.
If you want to make money, do something that anyone else doesn't want to do!
Exactly 👍🏼
As a certified master toilet mechanic [plumber], I endorse this message.
"Go Start One" love this!!
i like that he diversified his brands
As long as people stay dirty this company will stay filthy rich
no, you mean as long as there is one born every minute.
I used 800 got junk and it's great to get rid of crap you no longer need. Love it.
They surprised me with a laminated “bed weight” sheet & said the job would cost MORE money. Bait & switch❗️
Nice guy, nice attitude, & respectful no wonder his employees & his customers feeling warns around him
what employees?
i worked for a very busy hauler here in san diego about 20 years ago. we had plenty of work doing tear-outs and hauling jobs for companies like marrokal construction, jackson remodeling, and several other home-to-condo-court developers- and we did the usual appliance and unwanted furniture calls. always busy and always saw 1-800-got-junk trucks parked on freeway overpasses and in parking lots overlooking the freeways or main route- usually relying on gorilla advertising- and hardly ever at a worksite. my friend jason and i proved it to ourselves that the only name you need on your truck is YOUR name.
What an awesome story! Thank you so much for sharing 🙌💛
I love Brian Schumader it's from 1 800 got junk? I like him it's beautiful 😻❤️❤️😻❤️❤️❤️😻😻❤️❤️😻😻❤️❤️❤️ god bless him it's incredible guy
1800 Got Junk is a great company!! They also have secret shops! I've gotten paid a profit of $45 to get $200 worth of junk taken away!!
Yea I knew some guys in HS that worked for them, the stuff folks would throw away was insane (atvs, boats etc)
Hey they did a story about you. I have so many questions and you was super motivating!
@@jimmyroute2085 Let me know how I can help!
@@ToddBaldwin what's a secret shop?
I was expecting your comment to have a link to some scam survey thing.
@@phil2782 Lol no scams. I talk a lot about secret shopping on my UA-cam channel. It is just a way to give companies feedback on their products and services in exchange for free stuff
You get what you pay for, even when it comes to junk!
My Favourite upload on this channel. Super inspiring company and guy !!
I went through that. I had a business where the "manager" was lying on his time cards, saying he worked 9 hours per day and he only worked 4 or 5 hours, and he was always trying to sell AmWay to my customers. I went the other way, tbough, I sold my business. Wrong decision. Once I was a corporation owner for half a decade, I could never fit in as an employee anywhere, ever again. I had to finish out my law enforcement career as a contractor.
Hats off to you Sir!!!!
This is the honest hard work and humility we need in more business, lots of ppl hire okay or straight up bad ppl and it ruins the whole company and makes everyone work slow and ultimately makes everything such a pain
Good ppl good product good process = good business
nonsense- you could put joe-blow: HAULER on the side of the truck and still make a fortune (and keep it all for yourself).
@@tommurphy4307 great name actually, but try to scale a business with crap systems bad ppl and meh products. It doesn’t work.

She looks young and he looks old
And some looks jealous 😅
My exact thoughts! Mom sure is enjoying this ride more than he is. He looks a bit rough for sure

Exactly what I think too. This woman looks so, so young!
So inspiring! He seems to be a very humble person.

I've booked them to take my junk away next week...apparently all i have to do is point and they take it all away...
I almost cried tears of relief... Im so happy..
" how become 500 mill empire'

**Literally**
they should let people know they charge i didn't know and end up paying $465.00 for a sofa and chair removal the a few other small things i just did not know they charge so much i was shocked..
I worked for 1800 got junk. Never felt so exploited ever in my life. The company is a good idea but somewhere along the line, the workers got seriously screwed.
It happens to more then one company. They get investment and pretty soon they are being bossed around and employees become the ones shafted.
This, the franchise I worked for "layed off" workers including our manager due to all of us being afraid of covid when it first came to the eastern seaboard. We didnt know what it was at the time. I stead of taking 2 weeks to reevaluate and put policies in place, they layed my manager off and forced the rest of us to drive all over. They weren't even going to give anyone hazard pay. Needless to say, we were one of the most improved franchises under our managers leadership and they threw him under the bus. I immediately resigned and havent looked back. I cant work for a company that treats people that way.
@@ryancaskey4975 bet you one thing. Its that trash companies are trash. This business model might work but really it will not. Already sounds and looks like a company I wouldn't put any money on.
I spent a lot of years working at Got-Junk? across four different franchises (Calgary, Vancouver, Nanaimo/Comox Valley, then Calgary again with new owners) and definitely recommend this job for people who like physical work, chatting with people, and every day being very different. But more to the point, Brian, when is the next Hunks of Junk calendar coming out? Your fans demand it! :D (Spoiler: Brian was January in the first release, but February was all me ;)
My brother is like that. He dropped out. Owns a mechanical contracting company. He became a millionaire before he became 30
We thank Brian for all that he has done for the junk removal industry.
Truly an inspiration! Well deserved success👍
Wow people pay him to take their junk (not junk but old things which can be repaired ) in India people would expect him to pay them.
I understand, my family is from Mexico. I was surprised to see how they repair the smallest things. What happens is that here in the U.S sometimes its cheaper to replace than to repair. It makes us such a wasteful country.
I work for this company, and the things I’ve seen people throw away are insane! It’s because it’s the rich people who mostly book on and are willing to pay the crazy prize.
Oh believe me I know lmao! 😂 I work for 1-800-GOT-JUNK? And I’ve had plenty of them expecting us to pay them to remove their crap

Yup. I worked for his biggest competitor. Affordable Junk. We made about 1250 a day per truck with 4 trucks out each day. I started a small junk removal business too and use it for spare cash. Can make 500 bux in a couple hours. Its dirty, sweaty and smelly work sometimes but it's very lucrative. Especially if you have a reselling shop for used goods

just saw a new commercial with him yesterday. lol thought he 'd been banned for scamming the public. hadn't seen him in a long time
I applied for tha junk driving job.....you gotta have 7yrs of experience to drive for them out tha gate
You're cool man! People like you made America, let's go!!!😎👍💪♠️
Wow that’s awesome! I love that we can live in America and build businesses...I built a Real Estate Investing and Finance business and new have a UA-cam channel about it 😄
I saw what you just did! Nice! Lol
Do they just make money off getting people’s junk or do they sell of the washing machines, dryer, fridge parts
I guess both, you'd be surprised about how much people throw away perfectly working stuff that worth tens or hundreds of dollars, even selling them as scrap metals will give them tens of dollars a tonne
scrap metal I suppose
Both. Even get payed to recycle metal. Charge the customer, resell the items and what you can resell, you recycle and what you’re left with you put a free sign on it and when people are done picking through the free stuff then you take it to the dump. Or some people. (Not me) burn it.
Used to work for the company, they literally make money off of everything, they have surcharges for most items, not a bad business idea whatsoever
Well its franchises. He makes money from each franchise lol.
I use Got Junk in Canada and America. Here in Toronto they pick up our trash once every two weeks which is the biggest joke of all time considering how crazy our taxes are.
And then the cocaine money started rolling in.
What a great business!! I have a garage full of junk that I’ve been wanting to get rid of.. I’m calling them tomorrow morning!!
make sure you get the secret discount by calling at 5AM
This company charges so much for very little work. My move packs and moves my entire apartment for 2000 dollar, these guys helped me throw away 2 pieces of furniture, charged me 300 ...
'work' is a four-letter word at 1-800-GOT-JUNK
They go through your junk and take out the good stuff to resell it.
Found this guy reading the Millionaire Fastlane, he’s a real role model 🔥🔥🔥
Amazing! Anyone think this is still a lucrative business model in 2020?
Depends dude. In my country this kind of business is at different business model. But yes. People literally litters rite
Depends on the country. Household junk is removed by the city here, you just have to schedule and appointment
Yup, going strong!
@@Dongonzales123 are there countries that don't remove household rubbish. From what I see, He removes the extra rubbish that the council won't remove. Council isn't going to take your old freezer or washing machine 😎

My brother works for a company like this and makes good money. You can earn six figures becoming a junk man

What does he do with the junk haul?
Great story. Hard work beats talent every time.
Yes, when talent doesn't work hard..otherwise no chance, all things being equal BUT talent.
i applied at 1-800 got junk. It was posted at 14-18$/hr which was okay. got the interview and they said 11$/hr and had to do sales and to get commissions.. hung up right away from zoom interview. Very unprofessional of me but so is lying on job post.
scrap metals/alloys are not junk
Years ago, my brother did exactly that. A scrap metal business. He could put a 6.5 foot tall soda/snack machine 4 feet up into his flat bed truck, by himself, back in the day.
You are so correct!

Yooooo the deep freezer part. I experienced that first hand. Actually have a junk removal video on my page where someone left something dead in a deep freezer. I won’t tell you what it is you will have to go see it for yourself haha.
What do you do with the junk after collecting it?
pay to dump it at the landfill- do you want some?

"All you have to do is point." Make junk disappear? You mean make your money disappear! This company is a rip off junk company. Save your money, don't call them. Do it yourself or hire someone with a truck.

what a motivated story~!
There's the one thing this guy didn't mention - it's hard work.
NOT implying there's anything wrong with hard work or working hard but the face value of what he does is difficult physical labor - face value.
never seen that- only seen a few items in their truck at any time.
Great video. Very inspiring.
I think that was my English teacher 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I hired this company to take away what was still decent but used furniture. What surprised me was I had thought the stuff I was giving away was going to be donated perhaps to charity or to some other worthy humanitarian cause, instead the sofa, glass dining table and padded chairs, the bed (less than 2 years old) and other pieces of furniture were all tossed out and/or smashed up into pieces and tossed into the back of their trucks!
In a sense, my donations I had paid them to haul away, was treated like JUNK 😧😠😡
Amazing !
Love this!
what do they do with the 'junk'?
Shout out to a Canadian Business success
What happens to this "junk"? Is it sorted? Is anything recycled? Is there anything environmentally responsible about this or is this just another way for people to get rid of the reminder of their rampant consumerism & not have to see the consequences of what it's doing to this planet?
Yes it's sorted, but not for your over reacting reasons.
They have to pay landfill to dump the stuff. So if something can be donated/sold to a charity/op shop/scrap dealer/2nd hand dealer/recycler etc they don't have to pay the landfill charge AND make a profit/tax break into if what they already charged the customer. I'm sure theirs different charities they work with for different things. Ie some that need prams/cots etc for kids some for clothing etc.
Something's are resealable, I'm sure they would do it largely in bulk. Eg: shipping container of crappy clothing shipped off to make into rags and so on.
Some of it may be scrap metal. You may not care about the $10 of scrap metal, but $10 a load is millions for these guys at this scale. Any yet again they don't have to pay landfill charges.
It's also largely sorted as it goes on/off the truck.
A large amount of crap still gets dumped. But probably less than you'd assume.
@@phil2782 I don't think it's over reacting to hold a news program to a standard that takes into account the largr consequences of what it's reporting on.
