Thank you so much for the video. It helped me when puting the ashtray back. Was strugling a lot before you showed me the hole at the back, that gave me trouble. I guided the pin a little bit and ... the ashtray just slotted in perfect 😊
Very very useful because I am going to dremel 2 small (phone side of usb connector AKA the smaller size connector) holes into the top rear corners of that cubby to route the usb cable behind the cubby for phone. which will give less clutter in cubby, cable can be extracted and manually retracted as needed.
Hi Nelson, It is a bit fiddly putting it back, but if it is not closing correctly then you haven't got it back in place correctly. There may be the wiring loom in the way or it may not be sitting in the correct holding points. Check out my other video which again shows how I fiddled about with it. It usually goes in after you play around with it for a while and you will know once you get it in place correctly as it finally pops in place and you feel it is right. Thanks for watching, remember to subscribe, and let me know how you go.
@@HowtoMan Hi Howto, thanks for your answer. Actually, because it was difficult to put it back, a small plastic part has broken, so I will have to fix it (or buy another complete part), then reinstall it. I saw your video and now I will do it carefully. Thanks again and have a Happy Christmas
@@nelson7827 Thanks. If you do need to buy a new one, go to a car scrap yard / wreckers, there are loads of them and I'm guessing you should get it for about $20-30. Have a great Christmas.
I believe it only comes in one bit. If you did manage to take the front panel off the compartment it would be really fiddly to get it back together. If it is something you need to replace, I would suggest getting a replacement from a wreckers yard. There are loads of them around given the number of Golf's that have been sold.
Can you be a little more specific? Do you mean the electronic brake switch which is in the centre console, or the whole centre console? If you mean the whole centre console, check out my other videos. Thanks for watching and remember to subscribe to my channel.
Thanks for this-- I was able to quickly fix the jammed mechanism on my Mk7.5 GTI after removing it with your instructions here...even though I'm left-hand drive. Saved me a trip to the dealership!
@@rwinter6686 Once I removed it I was able to free the stuck mechanism by gently pushing from different angles until I could realign the gears--usually it's on one side only, so look at the good side to see where it should align.
It is actually a button that turns the air con off. It is completely odd, as that is what the fan speed dial is also for. When you turn the fan speed it also then turns the air con back on again. Crazy eh. Thanks for watching.
I would try not force it open as this will definitely break it - the mechanism doesn't seem that strong to me. I would repeatedly give it a hard tap to try and dislodge whatever is stopping it from opening. If that does not work, I would then start the hard task of levering it from behind which would be a real pain as you would need to move paneling to get to the back. If all else fails, I would go to a scrap yard and get a replacement and then just rip the old one out. Hope this helps.
@@HowtoMan i found an answer on a VW forum (in case anyone else has this problem). Seems it's happened to a few people where a cable has gotten in the way of the mechanism. If you press firmly on the outer edges it pops open the mechanism! Worked for me 😊 Thank you for your response!

Hi Rainers - They can be a bit prone to breaking. My recommendation is to go to a car breaker/scrap yard and get a new one. They are so many golfs around, so a replacement will be really cheap. While you are there you also get the opportunity to find other great upgrades from higher spec models. Thats what I have done to my golf. Mine is the lowest spec, however I have bought from a breakers yard loads of bits from the GTI version, the highline version (i.e. a full leather interior, internal led lights, subglasses holder, etc.).

Awesome video buddy 😎 I would like to suggest how to remove headliner in mk7 and black out interior video would be awsome
That’s awesome thanks. Any idea what the part number is?
How do you open the trim around the gear stick please?
Can you access the gateway module from there, or do you need to remove the climate control panel as well?
Thanks. It as very clear and useful. The problem is that when I put it back, I couldn’t put it properly and the door does not close or open correctly.

Where can I order this part?
Is it possible to remove (and replace) the facia front lid section from the cubby mechanism of must the whole part be replaced?

I’ve tried everything short of a hammer to get it back in, it won’t go. Is there some trick to this?
