  • GERMANY: Entrepreneurs desperate! Bureaucracy and citizen's allowance fuel shortage of skilled workers
German companies are increasingly complaining about too much bureaucracy and the lack of skilled workers. According to the Federal Employment Agency, the costs of supporting those receiving the citizen's allowance are also rising. Projected over the entire year, the costs in Germany amount to 47 billion euros, almost 10 billion euros more than estimated by Social Minister Hubertus Heil. Alexander Unger, operator of the Becher Huus in Haan, sees the citizen's allowance as a contributing factor to the shortage of skilled workers. "We currently have seven full-time positions to fill. Zero applicants for the apprenticeships, zero applicants. People are sitting at home, not going to work, collecting good citizen's allowance and seeing no motivation. We are cushioning this by having everyone work more. The person who has the fewest overtime hours here is talking about 40 on average per month. That means we also have candidates who have 70 hours. I myself have never had to work so many hours in my entire life. I am now working a 110-hour week," says Unger.
There are around two million vacancies in the German economy. At the same time, the Federal Employment Agency announced that the number of people receiving citizen's allowance has risen to over four million, the highest number since Corona. Experts criticize that the high citizen's allowance is reducing motivation to work. However, the SPD continues to support the current citizen's allowance rate. The aim of the welfare state is to get people who are currently unable to work or are not working into work. For the Union, that is not enough. It wants to abolish citizen's allowance again. "Nobody has to work. But those who receive social benefits and can work cannot expect others who go to work every day to pay for them. Our conclusion from this is that we will withdraw citizen's allowance in this form and we will do it and not just talk about it," said the Union. Alexander Unger wants to continue and fight for his restaurant. But without new support, he will not last much longer.
