    I like both Diana Ross & The Supremes version and Jean's version. Jean's was obviously just a demo though. Just have to say though how tired I am of all the bickering about this or that Supreme being the best or being the worst. They were all great and they were all different. Also tired of the bitching about lack of success for the 70's Supremes, mostly because it is untrue and an insult to them. The Supremes had 8 top 40 hits in the 70's. Up The Latter To The Roof #10- Stoned Love # 7- Everybody's Got the Right To Love # 18- River Deep Mountain High (with the 4 Tops) # 11-Nathan Jones # 14-Floy Joy # 14- Automatically Sunshine # 33 and Gonna Let My Heart Do the Walking# 40. In addition I Guess I'll Miss The Man was # 18 on the Adult Contemporary Chart and He's my Man/Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking/Your My Driving Wheel were all # 1 on the Dance Charts. Why anyone would call that a failure is beyond me. Most musical acts would give anything for that kind of success. The '60's Supremes were more successful for a very brief period 1964-1967. After that they did have 2 more # 1's but also had many of their releases did more poorly or at best only as well as the 70's Supremes releases. Did Ross do better solo than the Supremes and/or Mary Wilson? Yes and no. She did have 6 more # 1 hits, but she also had several spectacular flops like I'm Still Waiting and Last Time I Saw Him. She had 1 successful movie Lady Sings The Blues and 2 big flops Mahogany and The Wiz. She hasn't had a top 40 hit since 1983 and has not been in a theatrical release since The Wiz. Mary Wilson's Autobiography sold 10 times more copies than Ross'. Return To Love was an attempt to revive Ross' career after 17 years of no hits. The public saw it for the fraud it became and ticket sales were so lackluster that it ended 1/2 way through its run-Motown ended Ross' contract as a result. Her Atlantic self paid for release I Love You sold 1/4 million copies. Mary Wilson took over as the Supreme serving as the face of Motown and has hosted their TV specials and promoted their re-issues of music and archived videos ever since. Wilson had a top 20 Dance Chart hit in 2015 So, a very mixed bag. Whew! Glad I got that off my chest!

      I think the split hurt them both. Never again would Diana sing in the lower key. And the Supremes lost label support. Loved all the songs

      ReNova Recovery Institute.... THANK YOU for your accurate delivery of THE SUPREMES statistics. One thing I would add, The Supremes (Mary, Cindy, Jean) second Album "New Ways But Love Stays" produced by the great Frank Wilson delivered the #7 Billboard Pop Hit & #1 R&B Hit "STONED LOVE" while Diane Ross second Album "Everything Is Everything" was a total FLOP with no Billboard Top # 40 Hit. Right after the release it could be found in the 0.99 Cents bind of Record Stores.

      Are you kidding...she took all the drama out of the song...she singing the song as opposed to telling a story like Miss Ross' version

      I agree! People kill me with statements about a great voice! A great voice isn’t enough! Delivery, interpretation and connection to the lyrics are the ingredients of a successful voice. Jean is just Jean - singing without those ingredients…Diana has those ingredients in SPADES! That’s the difference.

    This really sounds like it's a demo - they (Motown) were trying different styles on Jean while M&C were still on the road with Diana (tho we all know now that there were many published cuts that didn't include M&C) and for me, I'm just grateful for ANYTHING this woman has recorded. Jean is a phenomenal singer who quit (for good reason) the Supremes and it's criminal that she didn't make much more music for us all after her 3 year tenure with the group. She's still out there - never say never!

    Jean is such a great singer she can even make a mediocre song sound great. Jean is one of the greatest singers Motown ever had. Shame they didn't appreciate her enough.

    Quit, comparing Jean to Diana Ross mainly cause she's apart of the Supremes legacy too. Realize she worthy of being one of the group best lead vocalist.

      It's only normal to compare those who assume the same position and evaluated their artistic value and performance. For me Jean Terrell & Scherie Payne can run circles vocally on Diane Ross always.

    While I adore Diana's pop version, I LOVE Jean's FUNK version!!!!! That bass line is AWESOME!!!!!! Both lady's are backed by the Andantes. On Diana's version, the Andantes give more of a pop "middle of the road" supporting vocal to Diana's "cross over appeal" voice. Whereas the Andantes let it rip (I LOVE Louvain Demps on that high AHHH!!!") as Jean gives you that "Sly and the Family Stone" funk feel. One song, two great singers, both Masterpieces. Both should have been released as singles. Also, this song should have been re-recorded with Mary and Cindy singing supporting vocals to Jean's lead for either the "Right On" or "New Ways but Love Stays" album.

    • @TWTR4EVER
      @TWTR4EVER 4 роки тому +1

      FYI- Steven Johnson......Mr Frank Wilson producer of "Right On", "New Ways But Love Stays" and "Touch" Albums didn't want to use tracks pre-recorded by Diane Ross. In "New Ways But Love Stays" they perform The Beatles "Come Together" that when you listen to it, is a complete new track of music of the one from DRATS (Diane Ross And The Supremes) and the instrumentation and vocals are outstanding, far more soulful, modern and representative of the times in the 1970's.

    ONLY musically! Diana's version flowed better, as this one is unusually choppy! And it IS DEMO! But JEAN SANG The STEW INTO This cut! I didn't care for the music on this one at first. Too much distraction. But Jean Hung with it, and it IS funky! And had Motown put its Magic to it, It would've ROCKED! I Still LOVE the Diana version, but it doesn't Pale THIS one performance-wise, even in it's raw state.

    HORRIBLE!! I am baffled by the comments praising this disastrous rendition! Knowing and hearing (Jean) Diana Ross’ delivery of this song-I am baffled that this disaster was deemed worthy of releasing! Mary and Cindy who recorded this before with Diana should have insisted that this mess be declared DOA! This is a terrific song-if delivered and interpreted with feelings…I have enjoyed a couple of leads from Jean - this is horrible. Anyone reading my comment should listen to Diana’s version and hopefully then you will agree with my harsh assessment of this disaster. 🤷‍♂️

      Keep in mind that this demo was not released except on compilations put out by second rate venues many years after its initial recording. It's not a final product, and was most likely a result of some experimentations with Jean when she first came on board with the Supremes. While I love Diana's version, it is common knowledge that Mary and Cindy did not sing background vocals on many of the songs from the "Love Child" album from which this great song comes, so it's likely they are not singing on "How Long Has That Evening Train Been Gone" or they may be singing with the Andantes. We fans love to hear anything from the Supremes whether it be something that was already released, an alternate version, or anything previously unreleased.

      Diana was singing a song. Jean was singing about her life. Two totally different approaches. Big production versus a quick demo with Jean probably reading the lyrics off the sheet music. Two great and quite different voices but this song needs heart and soul.

    This is a surprisingly week vocal by Jean she’s not spending any time interpreting these wonderful lyrics. Sadly, she’s choosing style over substance and it’s so unlike her. Very disappointed that she’s throwing away this wonderful song to make a good sounds. I’m not surprised they never went any further with it.
