      Finally a sensible person! Everyone else just think popping the clutch will stop it.. Idiots have no idea the power going through it. I've been driving big rigs for 15 years now and in the beginning of my career this happened to my old Volvo truck.
      I just backed the fuck off and hid behind a tree. Some guy nearby jumped in the truck thinking he could be the hero, put the thing in 5th gear and slammed the clutch. Ripped the entire clutch, driveshaft and parts of the engine to shreds. Never seen rods and random metal shrapnel fly that far. The hood had like 5-6 holes in it, my gearbox was gone, everything just fucked. Would have been easier to just the let the engine run it's course.

      Absolutely, had I or anyone else been standing near the truck when it blew to bits bad things would have happened.
      And not only did I have to buy a new engine. I also had to rebuild the entire drive train. Plus parts of the bodywork, brake system, left fuel tank and hydraulics.
      I mean instead of just blowing the engine, the fucktard caused so much damage I might as well have bought a new truck..
      The recovery crew said they found rods and parts of the truck over 100 meters /yards away.

      Viking88 I work as a forklift engineer in the uk but pretty much fix any piece of equipment that comes my way, a few years ago one of my customers had a big old generator (about 200kva) they wanted to get running, we brought it back to the workshop, my old foreman (best mentor I've ever had) got it started and it instantly ran away, no time to do anything, all over in a minute, one rod let go punched through both sides of the block, oil filter housing 50 feet away, the big inline bosch injection pump torn off and embedded in the cinder block wall 15 feet away like a dart, shrapnel every where! It was a miracle no one was hurt/killed. It's serious stuff, no opening bonnets, just get away! It might just seize but if it grenades and your over it/along side it, god help you!

      It is indeed terrifying. I worked 12 months on the S.S Heimdal up in the bearing sea and around the Norwegian coast (the ship is an ice breaker, about 320 ft/98m long) and the gigantic diesel engines in that thing scared the crap out of me, now I'm absolutely no diesel mechanic so I'm not sure one of those engines can even run away but hell they are the size of a small house.. And the ship had 4 of them! Four 16-cylinder monster diesel engines pumping out close to 15 000 kw. What's that like 20 000 hp or something..
      I loved working on that ship but standing shoulder to shoulder with those behemoths, feeling that rumble I could only imagine the chaos if one ran away.

    Anyone who thinks that putting the truck in a high gear and dumping the clutch is a good idea is wrong. How many of you have seen a big engine or transmission explode? I have. My friend tried to stop a C-15 cat in a peter that was running away by putting the trans in high gear and letting go of the clutch. The trans exploded and the flywheel and/or clutch decapitated his right foot just below the knee. I was there and had to drive him to the hospital personally. When a diesel engine goes rogue, let it blow. Only a fool gets close to that raging beast. The truck/engine can be replaced (that's what insurance is for) your life cannot.

    I got to see a 24v Cummins run away yesterday. The idle picked up a little bit, turbo started to spool, then it just revved up out of control. 6000-8000 RPM. It happened so fast, 5 seconds, tops. The valvetrain sang like an E46 BMW, then it locked up. It sent oil out the exhaust for 40 feet. Shop got completely smoked out. You could smell the burnt oil for 8 blocks. The shop owner looked at his apprentice (5th day on the job) and said, "The worst thing that can possibly happen, just happened. This is as bad is it gets. Let's sit here for a bit and make sure it doesn't catch fire. Maybe we can find a barrel to burn all of the oily rags we're about to make."

    • @CodyMechanix
      @CodyMechanix 3 роки тому +16

      Who took the seals out of it before running it? I know for a fact from experience that a 24v Cummins won’t just run away. They are the most reliable diesel engines you can get. Not trying to be rude but this sounds like complete bullshit. You wouldn’t smell the oil for 8 blocks. It was probably a Powerstroke or a Duramax.

    • @Dr_Xyzt
      @Dr_Xyzt 3 роки тому +40

      @@CodyMechanix You're right. We've been thinking about that and came to a similar conclusion. The vehicle owner trashed the original engine by running it low on oil. So, the shop owner procured a different engine and installed it, only to have it run away as described. We're not really sure why this happened. He did not replace the intercooler. For a while, the shop owner suspected that the intercooler was contaminated with oil and caused the new engine to run away, but the engine ran until it was up to temperature, albeit smokey. The amount of oil it discharged was incredible, far more than what would physically fit in the intercooler, hence why we also believe the turbo was sabotaged.

      @@CodyMechanix That was a heck of an experience. The rear quarter was covered in oil. More oil was spewed out the exhaust for about 2 car lengths. It was all over the side of the shop. Both bays were smoked out so bad, you couldn't see. It happened so fast. That was the fastest runaway I've ever seen. I got on UA-cam and looked at runaways for about an hour. I swear, it made the BMW inline-6 sound too. That tin-like buzzing sound. We had seen runaways happen before, but never that fast. The idle was hanging high for a good 12 seconds. Once the turbo spooled, it was over in 5-7 seconds. We didn't stand a chance.

      @@user2C47 maybe? though I think a runaway would be going fast enough to still keep going, the jakes only take so much compression away, but also at those kinds of RPM it would for sure cause other damage, bent push rods broken rocker arms bent valves etc, which could stop the engine too, if they even engage... lots of ifs, best and really safest thing is to starve it of air by blocking the intake somehow, which I admit is scary as F cause you will likely need to pull the intake boot and find something to cover the turbo... before it throws a rod
      Though unlike what most of the keyboard commandos on here are claiming thrown rods and exploding transmissions don't create all that much carnage, the firewall/floor boards will stop it or the flimsy popcan aluminum hood will stop a thrown rod.. most of the force is taken up by the case. though if you are very unlucky... you could catch a thrown rod or worse a head could blow off, but its unlikely.

    Jonny2k100 gave a good description. Sometimes diesel engines suffer from runaway effect, for example when engine oil mixes with air trough broken seal in turbo. As diesel ignites fuel using high compression it's speed is governed by amount of fuel added, there is no throttle body, spark plugs, etc, nothing to "switch off" to stop it. Motor oil bypasses fuel system and gets directly to the engine it makes it run without any diesel added. More engine speed = more oil pressure.

If you're gonna cut off the air, do it with something solid if you can. And DO NOT. I REPEAT: DO NOT put that thing into gear because second ya do it's gonna spin the transmission too fast and it'll blow up. See another comment. A guy did that and his right foot was decapitated.
      And if its been going for more than 20 or 30 seconds, don't try to save it cause chances are its gonna throw something out the block somewhere and you don't know where or when its gonna be. If its gonna blow, best to leave that raging beast be.

    About 20 years ago, I was following a dump truck up a mountain at 55 mph, when, over a distance of a half a mile, the exhaust out of both stacks went blacker and blacker, and he pulled over. As soon as he pushed the clutch in, it revved crazy high. He put it back in the highest gear he had and dumped the clutch. I stayed with him until help arrived and had quite a conversation with him. He said he knew he had a problem when no matter how much throttle he gave it, power output kept going down. Turned out the intake side turbo seal failed, dumping crankcase oil in the intake. If you have uncontrolled fuel ( crankcase oil) in the intake it will rev like crazy but not produce any power because it's running too rich. He did save the engine, but enough oil got into one cylinder that it hydro locked. Fortunately, the engine had only 5k miles on it and was still under warranty.

I called for another engine company to put OUR fire out. 911 could not grasp what was happening, until I told them that we are expecting out engine will blow itself up....It turned out to be caused by a bad ground between the generator and rig. On the old 2 stroke Detroit's I grew up with, I've seen several go into a runaway. The first thing is to pull the emergency shutdown. If that doesn't work you put it in the highest gear and let the clutch out quickly but don't just "dump" it. If THAT doesn't work, you open the hood (try and stay away from the top of the engine and the sides as much as possible, in front or behind it is safer) and cut the fuel line or knock it off with a bar or hammer. If THAT doesn't work you can stuff a shirt into the air intake or hold something flat (like a phone book) over it. If THAT doesn't work, try spraying a fire extinguisher into the intake, it can't run if there's no oxygen in the air to combust. And if THAT doesn't work, get AWAY from it!!!

    Owner: go open the hood and shove something in the turbo! Save the truck!
    Driver: uh..dangerous?
    Owner: employees are replaceable, trucks are expensive... go save the truck even if it kills you

    This just happened to me today. I used a troopers knife and cut the rubber air intake hose that goes to the cold air side of turbo and then plugged it with a piece of wood. This starved the engine of air and it shut down. Very scary since all the smoke was coming into the engine area. Its a dump truck so the exhaust pipe doesn't go straight up. It goes to the side

      You are the only intelligent person to comment on here, I covered the air inlet on a freightliner with a wooden clipboard and it was enough to kill the engine

    I had a KW start to runaway. I had just made it into the shop with the turbo squealing. The turbo started leaking oil into the intake. The engine spooled up like crazy. I set the park brakes (truck and trailer), put the transmission in third and eased the clutch out. A day later, and a new turbo, I finished the trip and went home.

    Whoa whoa whoa I’m not a semi guy but I always heard my dad talk about a runaway because he drove truck for 35 years. This guy’s boss wanted him to flip open the engine compartment on a fk’n runaway!?! It’s just my personality but I would’ve had word’s for him when I got back and seen him face to face

    Had run away diesel VW Jetta back in 1992. Had just gotten on the highway was accelerating to join traffic and the engine fired off. It was small 4 cylinder engine and it was uncontrollabe situation. Can't imagine what it's like when you have 500 HP under you.

    May need another engine after that, I've only seen one run away and it was in the shop, thank goodness someone had enough knowledge to cap off the air intake

    Try puncturing a shallow natural gas line with a D8 dozer grouser and see what happens when the engine gets a whiff of that.

    My HS school bus driver was taking us home one day. Our bus was a crown bus and had an 8v71 in it. Well, it decided it wanted to run away one day on the way home. Fortunately, it ran away at a stop sign. James stuck it in 100th gear (humorously as we stated) and dumped the clutch... He said "Hang on" One big lunge forward, he dumped it and killed the motor. But clutch parts went out all over the back but the 8V71 saw life again in 4 days on the road.

    It's hard to watch this video, poor engine pretty much committed suicide. GOD FORBID this ever happens again apply brakes drop into 5-6 or higher gear and pop that fucking clutch and it will shut down with out much damage. Scary shit there.

      If you know what you're doing, then yeah. Otherwise, that'll just bust a crap load of driveline parts and send shrapnel all over injuring or killing someone.

    • @markm0000
      @markm0000 8 років тому +2

      That is incredibly stupid. The engine is long gone before you drop your leg down on the brake pedal. If you push +6000ft lbs torque to a stationary transmission/drive shaft held by air brakes you will be adding a ton of parts to the repair bill..

    • @Briebabcock8052
      @Briebabcock8052 8 років тому

      +Mark M He doesn't have to worry about the repair bill. All he has to worry about is the tow cost and he'll be given money for the truck being totalled by the insurance.

      Not gonna happen. I've had a "run-away". That engine was spinning at above redline. I dropped the clutch in fifth (top) and it just spun the clutch like it wasn't there. Tried to block off the intake with a 3inch thick technical manual: it sucked the book in bending it in half. Finally after the other mechanic severed several fuel lines it stopped. Completely smoked out the 6 bay shop.

    Positive air shut off!
    Why they don't leave the factory with one is crazy to me.
    Push a button or pull a lever. Intake manifold is blocked and engine shuts down before I blows.
    But runaways are pretty cool to watch (from a distance)!
