After years I have begun to reacquaint myself with jazz... remembering it's beauty to the ears and it's ability to touch one's soul. Thank you to all it's artist... Miles, Coltrane,Mangione,Prysock and more...live on !!!
This is my go to start my day song, the bass and drum players are in that pocket so tight it's like one person playing three instruments! Its. A beautiful thing.
just came from a Ahmad Jamal tribute band show 10/23/16 at the Velvet Note in Alpharetta, GA. They provided history and a flavor of the masters work. Grew up in the NY area and my Father loved Jamal, was able to take my parents. A Jamal is a jazz gem that only comes around once in a lifetime, so grateful to have been exposed to one of God's musicians.
Hey Norm, I live in Sandy Springs. By any chance were you at the Atlanta Jazz Festival in Piedmont Park a few years ago when he closed it out on Sunday night? When he played Poinciana a light drizzle began; by the time he finished it was actually raining. No one left. Everyone was in the groove -- including Ahmad! It was one of those special moments!
My father took me with him to a record store in 1958 to buy the album Ahmad Jamal At the Pershing. I was just four years old then and I inherited his album. What a treasure!
Absolutely phenomenal. I am so grateful for videos and other recordings of such giants. In just a couple of weeks, Ahmad Jamal will be 90 years old!!!!! What a blessing. There should be a parade in his honor.
Maestro Manolo: no one has that touch, those ideas, that smile, this spirit...One of the greatest percussionists. Infinite inspiration for me as a player. Love ya Manolo!!!
Ahmad Jamal managed to extract the piano's true percussive qualities and sublime melodies in equal measure, a truly unique talent, gone but never forgotten. Rest in Peace
What a beautiful gift has been left to the world by this artistic genius and his co-creators. This version of Poinciana is the definition of the groove.
I was stationed at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH from 1967 to 1971 and caught a very young Ahmad Jamal play a set in a very smoky lounge. Who knew then just how special he was? Pure class.
The bass player Reginald Veal & The drummer, Herlin Riley both have New Orleans roots...the percussionist, Manolo Badrena is from Puerto Rico, & played with Weather Report for years. This band is superb...
God damn. Something I love about jazz - there's a million artists out there, all of them unique and fantastic. This performance is yet another brilliant one.
Was my bucket list to see him, and i just found out he died four days ago. Thank you Ahmad for all the joy you brought through your music. Rest in Peace.
I just aware of this video clip by accident. I am 30 years behind my school friends. But better late than nothing... enjoy his play so much. Watch it daily for 2 or 3 times. Also I like Joel Alexander, the prodigy boy from Indonesia.
Yes Indeed. This man daily with his signature tune and you will feel better. Everything Ahmad Jamal did made you think a bit more. Right? Dean Jackson Retired Teacher of the Deaf
That moment at 3:14 when Reginald throws that little gem out ......pleasantly surprising Ahmad.....So good!!!! this is what music and art is all about!
This is pure Ahmad Jamal and Yousef pure music how come they couldn't have this at super bowl halftime because that BS that came on air over here with a joke put some real entertainers on stage for a change lowest ready for any super bowl I'm sorry I can't fade it thank you I'm all Jamal and yusef these choreographers they need to get in tune and God bless you guys you and your family
I HAD NEVER HEARD OF AHMAD JAMAL, BUT ABOUT 45 YEARS AGO, I WALKED INTO A STORE THAT WAS PLAYING HIS MUSIC AND I STARTED DANCING RIGHT ON THE SPOT WHERE I WAS STANDING. IT WAS THIS VERY SONG THAT WAS PLAYING. I IMMEDIATELY BOUGHT THE ALBUM AND HAVE BEEN GROVIN' EVER SINCE. HIS MUSIC IS SO WELL KNOWN AND SO DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER PIANO PLAYER. ALL OF HIS GROUP ARE SUPERB MUSCIANS. THANK YOU FOR HAVING THIS ON UA-cam! MAY AHMAD HAVE MANY MORE BIRTHDAYS SO HE CAN PLAY MORE MUSIC. TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY AND I AM DANCING LIKE IT WAS 45 YEARS AGO! . . .SYLVIA!
I listen to this evocative piece of jazz perfection almost every day, but today it seems even more poignant than ever. I just learned of the passing of this jazz master, who I had the privilege of seeing perform live at City Hall during the Toronto Jazz Festival of 2007. Rest in peace and power, Mr. Ahmad Jamal.
My favorite jazz pianist of all times and the rhythm section is so badass!! Bass player is killing it but drummer and percussionist are too. They are so happy! This is just pure joy!
In Dec 1969, as a 20yr old bassist under contract to his company AJP Records, at The Record Plant studio in NYC, I had the privilege of sitting on a piano bench next to Ahmad and, at my request, listening to and watching him play this song. (He had the longest fingers I had ever seen! :-) What a thrill!! He was a kind and gentle person. RIP, boss.
Sixty years ago I heard Poinciana at a local Chicago station. Ahmed Jamal played at the Pershing Hotel at 39th and Federal, not far from the high school I attended. I was mesmerized by this song, and have heard it 10,000 times. Notice the interaction of the musicians. This is harmony.
Whenever I feel a little bit down and out I listen to this, it has a magic influence, and I understand that life also has its great moments. Thanks för that lifelong lesson, Ahmad Jamal.
No matter how many times Jamal plays this signature tune, there is always something fresh and different. Badrena's percussion certainly adds another wonderful layer of sound and texture to this particular performance.
I listen to this approx once weekly, to keep my spirit alive. Thanks to these guys, I'm able to overcome boredom & depression, as I'm getting old & only 10 years younger than Ahmad.
Well then get back to a keyboard or find a piano and do some simple stuff that I bet you can do. Anything on a piano is beautiful bro! Get down there right now!
Ed, I'm 84 and lots of physical things wrong. But, I have LOTS of wonderful memories and also--I have YOU TUBE. This grants me loads and loads of musical wonders, like this one. Lots of them help restore those precious memories for me. Think of the GOOD THINGS in your life and actively throw away the negative ones. Be happy with what you have and don't continue pondering the things you don't have. God made a great place for us to enjoy. Go and enjoy !!
Me too. At 71 now, I clearly remember my very first sound of a music with that piano, hard and good percussion, that tempo that drove me crazy, those pauses throughout, etc.,.etc.
…I first saw Reginald Veal and Herlin Riley (drums) way back in ‘93 with The Wynton Marsalis Septet. Remarkable how much they have matured musically. What an absolute treat. Chapeau!
This right here, did you hear me? This right here is truly a phenomenal sound!!! Smooth, cool, sexy and relaxing!!! All of these musicians are GREAT!!!
R.I.P Maestro. I listened to your older albums all day long. In fact I do that frequently. But today’s one was special, I have never been able to see you live, how it is great to have your recordings beside me.
I've been playing music for 53 of my 57 years. Ask a musician to pick a "favorite song." You may get a list a mile long. This piece is on my top 3. It moves me from one space, through many spaces and into another space, better than the first. Transcendent! Sublime!
I was born 4 decades after this man and just recently discovered his extraordinary music. I'm mesmerized beyond measure. The best jazz arrangements I've ever heard! Where have I been??!!

I bought two Ahmad Jamal LP's about sixty years ago and still playing them. Loved his use of silent passages.
Why does nobody mention the bass player and the drummer? They are superb.
