I am glad you were able to see this spectacle. What is called the elk rut is a standard time of year when bulls shed soft velvet to better compete with others for mating rights. The roughness of such fights ensure that the strongest pass on their genes. The bare antlers equip the bulls with that ability. So not "horrid," just a standard season for elk.

Yes, I had planned this trip in October of 2005, in particular to see the Elk rut and hear the bugling, it's a hair raising and primitive sound and beautiful at the same time. I stayed for 5 weeks at the Slough Creek campground and listened to the wolf's howl and one time had a Grizzly approach the back door of my camper. During my last week there in September it snowed and I have a picture of my truck and camper covered in snow but unfortunatly I can't post the pic here. Trip planned and accomplished perfectly.

I'm a born and raised resident, and love to learn about elk / the rutting season. I made this title 4 years ago when I was a dramatic preteen and didn't expect ppl to get so mad. Tbh it's a little funny how much backlash I'm getting from dude bros. I appreciate the respectful response, but since the video was made so long ago, I didn't really bother to make any changes and still wont bother. I'm a photographer and frequently hike and document the wildlife in my area. I'm trolling a little in the comments but it's all in good fun :) thanks

A few years ago at headquarters of Yellowstone National Park, Mammoth Hot Springs, there was a huge herd of Elk as there is most of the time, with some bulls and cows and one big bull in particular was huge and picking on all of the other bulls and chasing cows, and people. He was being particularly aggressive and that night the park rangers sedated him and cut off his antlers. When I saw him the next day with no antlers he was still being a bully but had no punch and the other elk were just thumbing their noses at him. It was funny and sad at the same time.

While walking along the Jasper Park Lodge golf course in late fall, my mother and I watched as the bull of a small elk herd started swimming toward the male of another herd. Each bull uttered guttural sounds of challenge, intent on stealing each other's cows. As the swimming bull came ashore and began walking toward us, we realized we would be trapped between the two males. But just then a Lodge pick-up truck arrived on scene to scoop us up and out of the way. Fortunately a group of golfers had been keeping an eye on the elk - and us! - and, realizing we could be in danger, phoned the Lodge and asked that someone be sent to rescue us. From the safety of the truck we watched as the males faced off.

You actually KNEW the bull elks would challenge each other, but instead of walking away, as the bull was swimming across the waterway , as any NORMAL people with common sense would do, you actually STOOD THERE (to videotape to show friends), and then begged for someone to come and save you? Dumb and dumber, lol.

The danger is all in your head. When I lived in that same area I used to go up frequently to Beaver Meadows where groups of several hundred elk could always be seen, and I would walk out among them and hang out within a few feet of the nearest animals for hours. If you just stay quiet, keep your movements contained and arms at your sides (not snapping photos constantly, in other words), they just ignore you. There never was any elk threat, the threat is from the people who don't bother to mind their manners in places where wild things belong and you don't.

Dominance is determined and the winner takes all. He knows when to hit that cow for maximum conception percentage. And the lifecyle of the elk continues.

When the one bull got knocked down and was being shoved around I was afraid we might see some bad injuries. Was glad to see that apparently did not happen. I once stalked close to a rutting harem bull for a phot op. He had a bloody gash on his forehead between his antlers, but nothing serious. It seems to me that the greatest risk for these animals must be the risk of eye injuries when they don't engage square on.

I lived in Estes Park nearly forty years ago, and the elk situation was already out of control then and had been for years. They were drastically over-populated in the eastern side of the national park, and the spillover effect into the town itself was extreme. Locals year in and year out experienced gardens being trampled, young trees being destroyed, fences being toppled, and of course several hundred would usually hang out on what was left of the grass on the golf course (yeah, like Estes Park ever needed a golf course.)
Elk aren't stupid. To the east of the town are vast national forest lands where hunting elk during season is legal, and to the west is the park, where it isn't. Every few years some poor soul with above-average common sense would put out a proposal for a special hunting season in the national park and even near the town itself, and OMG! The animal rights people would go berserk, those poor helpless elk, yada-yada. Like all do-gooders everywhere, with their ignorant and ill-considered moralisms, the outnumbered east-coast liberals in that traditionally Republican area apparently preferred to have the elk die of disease from overpopulation than to have their numbers reduced by hunting so that the herds as a whole could thrive.
Obviously common sense has never prevailed. Not surprising, tourist towns are not known for the mental acumen of their residents anyway.

Born and raised here in Estes Park Colorado, and have a garden of my own. I understand the pain of losing my plants, especially because its harder to grow up here. I'm not advocating for any cause and was completely being dramatic in the title as I was 15 when first posing the video 4 years ago. I do agree with you, the elk population issue is real and elk are pouring into town. The elk also slow down new growth and some areas have to be blocked off to prevent elk from destroying the flora. During the Rut when elk go to open valleys to carry their calls further, it unfortunately brings them to Estes Park as it's a valley just the same. I'm not against the idea of hunting either but the attack on locals intelligence won't get anyone anywhere. The best way to advocate for such things is to work with locals who are interested in your ideas. I know plenty of people who would be on board.

It’s setting herd dominance. You really need to see it in the wild, not in town. They know how to set the bar for “top dog” if you know what I mean.

The playing field is TOO level. Some clever bulls make use of terrain to their advantage to change the odds. In an open park, direct strength is all they have.
