This is the correct comment. The whole setup for the video is poorly done. They are comparing this to the old full size Land Cruiser when this is actually the Land Cruiser Prado. This is basically the same vehicle as the new Lexus GX which does offer the 6 cylinder engine. If anybody is looking for the closest thing to the full size Land Cruiser, would need to look at the Lexus LX in the US market. And they still sell the full size Land Cruiser overseas which we do not get here

I know right. First of all I want something that works. My buddy has a brand new F150 and he has constant infotainment problems. Also a Broncos are only around 10 to 15k less than this. Some Bronco's are the same price. So she is ok with damaging a 50k Bronco but not ok with damaging a 70k land cruiser?
This is extremely expensive. Cloth seats for about $70,000 is a little crazy. Having a hybrid system going through deep water sounds a little crazy. I would not buy a Ford, but I would not buy this car either. This car is limited to those who want to tow something, go on big offroad trails that don't have water, and want reliability (after the first year problems are worked out as even Toyota has problems the first year - look at the new Tundra with transmission problems/failures that Toyota put out a service bulletin on).

I'm disconcerted that anyone at CR would "like" a Range Rover/Land Rover given they are the least reliable cars in the whole market. What point in having a very expensive car that has many reliability issues and is also incredibly expensive to fix each time.
I mean a lot of people getting those Range Rovers lease them, and get rid of it before the big issues pop up. There’s also this saying that “luxury comes with a price” and that reliability and cost to repair is the price.
The more I see this, the more I want it. It looks awesome, not as huge as the prior one, and super modern. The emotional side of me wants to jump in on the new Land Cruiser or upcoming 4Runner immediately, while the pragmatic side is telling me to wait a year or two, or get a used GX/4Runner with the 4.0L V6 or 4.6L V8 to avoid these potential turbo issues.

I believe the decision to make the Honda Prologue with a choice of front or all-wheel drive was so that they could better differentiate the Acura ZDX that is built on the same architecture. Since rear-wheel drive is typically thought of as more sporty or more premium, when building two vehicles on the same basic electric vehicle architecture, having the Honda front-wheel drive and the Acura rear-wheel drive makes good business sense. They both use GM’s electric vehicle architecture, and the Blazer EV that also shares that architecture is available in front, rear, or all-wheel drive. So it seems that from the standpoint of build simplicity the architecture is flexible enough for them to have sent the power to any wheels they wanted and they chose to do it the way they did for a marketing reason.
These people either don't know anything about car or are paid by Ford. They will try to debunk this. I just bought the LCLC, and I love the power and performance going from a 2012 4runner 4.0 SR5.

Can a test be done while driving in rain. I heard because the 2024 LC front windshield is flat & vertical the visibility is very poor while driving in the rain. That could be a safety concern and might make me consider getting a 4runner instead.

I don't know! All you show us is Land cruiser going around a flat race track, it would appear. These things are primarily used on unsealed roads, bush tracks of all different conditions to extreme weather effected roads, tracks or cross country condition effected by rain or snow etc. Your version of the Land Cruiser is know as the Prado all be it Land Cruiser Prado in Australia. It has developed a reputation for reliability and flexibility with a decent range (138 to 150 litres of fuel) which is very useful for hauling caravans (trailers) over long or challenging remote conditions over distances of about 1000 kilometers. Hopefully we will get the diesel version which will help reward us with greater range possibilities than what the hybrid version will offer. Unfortunately the relocation of the spare tyre has lost us the sub fuel tank position. If you want a vehicle for city work then buy some more appropriate to your demands. My early Prado was very useful being able to deliver 7 children to various games or school commitments and then go exploring the outback on weekends or holidays. In short the new Prado/Land Cruiser will be a disappointment compared to its predecessors. Yes it has all the new helpful tricks but they are of little use if you run out of fuel as an example. The Land Cruiser 300 is a good work horse also and peoples comments have affirmed it, all be it an expensive acquisition. Thank you for your comments I await the "proper" test when you do it. I don't expect these vehicle to hand like a sports car so body roll vague steering aren't problems, reliability and range is key.

It goes against their own testing and rating system to suggest an abysmally ranked vehicle. CR has not published their ratings for the LC at the time of this response. Toyota is having significant reliability problems with their new engine and transmission designs (Tundra and Tacoma). Their truck and SUV engines are all being built at their Huntsville, Alabama plant. Be smart: Don't be first in line to buy these new models. Wait for the recalls to play out.
I love the looks of this and I think that's what is going to sell it. I'd like Toyota to put the same plugin hybrid system they have in the Rav4 Prime with maybe a bigger battery and a little more horsepower. Forget about pretending that you are going to take it off road and call it the Land Poser or the Faux Cruiser. My guess is the vast majority of people will buy this and drive it on city streets 100 % of the time and all the off road capability will go to waste, so why not make a version that allows people to drive electric most of the time? I mean in addition to the regular Land Cruiser of course.
I often see this claim that people don't take their SUVs off road. Seems like an assumption without evidence. I, for one, took my Grand Cherokee off road several times a year. And I'm sure I'll do the same with my new Land Cruiser.
I really liked the style of the original Land Cruiser. My dad almost bought one in 1970, but at 3000 dollars plus, it just was too expensive. How I have hated how it has evolved into a monstrous gas guzzling tank, not worthy of backcountry trails. And it is still too expensive. Where is the Jeep-like vehicle that Toyota has left so far behind? Toyota with its resources could build a better Jeep than Jeep could. Why do we have this redesign?
But the Prado IS a Land Cruiser, albeit not THE Land Cruiser. The LC Prado has been marketed simply as LC in Europe for years. I think Toyota gets to decide over its own nomenclature.
Agree, a non-hybrid model would be a game changer. A base non-hybrid could come in at $30k with the cheap plastic interior offered in 1958, a mid non-hybrid could start at $37 and a premium could start at $43. Offer the round headlights on all non-hybrid models to reduce parts needing to be changed out on the manufacturing line and reduce the costs with larger bulk purchases. Plus, they just look better than the 3 LED lights on the LC trim. I'd purchase that premium non-hybrid all day long. Of course, knowing Toyota they would make it standard 2wd with just a rear locker and no center locker or sway bar disconnect. Oh wait they are trying that with the 4Runner, which doesn't look as good. Damn it Toyota, why do you make this a love hate relationship?!?
The most modern this and that?lol. The only reason these overpriced vehicles feel so modern is because Toyota waited over a decade to replace these models. 15 yrs for 4runner, 14yrs for Tundra, 13yrs for the LC.
Who is this shows target audience? I feel like I’m watching a dad’s show from quite a few years ago, based on how they speak and the weird terminology being used 🤮 I’ve seen them in person, haven’t driven one. I do like the the look of them, except the rear tail lights. The price here in Canada is out of reach for most. Toyota is just reusing the Land Cruiser name it is a completely different vehicle from their line up than the previous version. Globally they call this version the Land Cruiser Prado. The old Land Cruiser was the equivalent of the Lexus LX where as this version is comparable to the Lexus GX.
Here is the problem with their model: if you have 2 products and only 1 of those conpanies is willing to buy the CR licensing, then CR has an incentive to give that product the best review because they know theyll collect a fee. Additionally, another problematic part of their model is that they use affiliate links to products on amazon. They receive a portion of those sales. This gives CR an incentive to give a product a better review vs one that doesnt offer an affiliate link.
Why are they comparing this to the previous Land Cruiser sold in the US until the end of 2021? These are two different models. The one we had previously is still made and sold around the world. This “newer model” has been around for years and is called Land Cruiser Prado outside of the United States. You would think Consumer Reports would know this.

Was excited at first for this but man under the hood it is a hot mess and it drives like a car. The trunk is pretty high with that fat battery and wondered why no sliding tray? Also the rear pop up window looks quite fragile and cant get past the cheapness feel.
I too assumed the GX was the better deal, until I drove a Land Cruiser. After doing so, I called up the Lexus dealer and had them return my deposit. I have a Land Cruiser in my garage now.

Great vehicle, but this is NOT "the" land cruiser - its just "a" land cruiser....the rest of the world gets this as the Land Cruiser Prado and still has the full size vehicle as a Land Cruiser. They alao make muktiple other varients in some global markets...the Land Cruiser name ks more than one model - its an entire vehicle group in Toyota's portfolio...i wish they sold both the Prado and the global Land Cruiser here... They could have done a despec'd version of the full size one to being the price down...
It’s misleading and inaccurate to price anchor to the previous Land Cruiser. It was a different vehicle, that was much larger, more luxurious, and was priced out of the market. A better comparison to the previous Land Cruiser might be the Lexus LX. The current LC should be 10-15 cheaper especially with the USD-JPY exchange rate since this way released into the US market.
This is basically an overpriced 4runner now, but wait... the 2025 4runner in top tier trim will cost ~ the same. it'll come down to styling and packaging for those that can afford a new vehicle in this price range. personally leaning towards the GX550, but i don't like climate integrated into the screen. oh well.

I'm sure CR predicted reliability would be high for the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser while so far I see 12 members in LC owners forum experiencing the vehicle going to limp mode with errors on dash like "Drive start control malfunction", :Hybrid system malfunction", "System malfunction visit your dealer". There are pics showing the errors on dash and vehicle towed. Toyota really need to rethink about reliability.
CR has changed and not for the better. They are biased towards vehicles and brands that get better MPG’s, have hybrids, smaller turbo engines, etc. in my opinion of course. 😂
You can find 12 drives on any vehicle with issues on any message board. Hell go on a Honda accord message board and there are issues. Not saying it will be great, but damn there are problems with ALL vehicles at times. My last 2014 Tacoma had 3 warranty repairs before 36k miles.

If you're too lazy to read their full road tests then that's your fault. None of you armchair experts seem to know what the term bias even means.
When CR rated the first Tesla at over 100% I lost all a lot of respect for them. Then reading cars don't qualify becouse of there own personal biased about not all models have safety features I lost all confidence in them. Now there no more than entertainment.

A turbo 4 with plastic engine components doesn’t seem like long term reliability will compare to the previous models.
23 mpg from hybrid drive train for $70,000 is disappointing. That’s little better than my 2020 Tacoma which was $33,000. I’d wait for the Rivian R2.

I would like to watch their review & opinion on off-roading a new Jeep Rubicon 392.. The LC is cheaper.
I love the looks of this and I think that's what is going to sell it. I'd like Toyota to put the same plugin hybrid system they have in the Rav4 Prime with maybe a bigger battery and a little more horsepower. Forget about pretending that you are going to take it off road and call it the Land Poser or the Faux Cruiser. My guess is the vast majority of people will buy this and drive it on city streets 100 % of the time and all the off road capability will go to waste, so why not make a version that allows people to drive electric most of the time? I mean in addition to the regular Land Cruiser of course.
I often see this claim that people don't take their SUVs off road. Seems like an assumption without evidence. I, for one, took my Grand Cherokee off road several times a year. And I'm sure I'll do the same with my new Land Cruiser.

I really liked the style of the original Land Cruiser. My dad almost bought one in 1970, but at 3000 dollars plus, it just was too expensive. How I have hated how it has evolved into a monstrous gas guzzling tank, not worthy of backcountry trails. And it is still too expensive. Where is the Jeep-like vehicle that Toyota has left so far behind? Toyota with its resources could build a better Jeep than Jeep could. Why do we have this redesign?
But the Prado IS a Land Cruiser, albeit not THE Land Cruiser. The LC Prado has been marketed simply as LC in Europe for years. I think Toyota gets to decide over its own nomenclature.

Agree, a non-hybrid model would be a game changer. A base non-hybrid could come in at $30k with the cheap plastic interior offered in 1958, a mid non-hybrid could start at $37 and a premium could start at $43. Offer the round headlights on all non-hybrid models to reduce parts needing to be changed out on the manufacturing line and reduce the costs with larger bulk purchases. Plus, they just look better than the 3 LED lights on the LC trim. I'd purchase that premium non-hybrid all day long. Of course, knowing Toyota they would make it standard 2wd with just a rear locker and no center locker or sway bar disconnect. Oh wait they are trying that with the 4Runner, which doesn't look as good. Damn it Toyota, why do you make this a love hate relationship?!?
The cargo floor board covering the battery is rated for a maximum 140 lbs - my dog is heavier than this.

The most modern this and that?lol. The only reason these overpriced vehicles feel so modern is because Toyota waited over a decade to replace these models. 15 yrs for 4runner, 14yrs for Tundra, 13yrs for the LC.
Regenerative braking is better with FWD than RWD. RWD can put more power to the pavement, so EVs with smaller motors tend to be FWD.
Who is this shows target audience? I feel like I’m watching a dad’s show from quite a few years ago, based on how they speak and the weird terminology being used 🤮
I’ve seen them in person, haven’t driven one. I do like the the look of them, except the rear tail lights. The price here in Canada is out of reach for most. I’m glad I bought my TRD Off Road 2022 4Runner, and will hold onto my modified rig for the next 8 yrs.

Jeeps and Broncos have their quality issues.
Toyota is just reusing the Land Cruiser name it is a completely different vehicle from their line up than the previous version. Globally they call this version the Land Cruiser Prado. The old Land Cruiser was the equivalent of the Lexus LX where as this version is comparable to the Lexus GX.
Here is the problem with their model: if you have 2 products and only 1 of those conpanies is willing to buy the CR licensing, then CR has an incentive to give that product the best review because they know theyll collect a fee.
Additionally, another problematic part of their model is that they use affiliate links to products on amazon. They receive a portion of those sales. This gives CR an incentive to give a product a better review vs one that doesnt offer an affiliate link.

Why are they comparing this to the previous Land Cruiser sold in the US until the end of 2021? These are two different models. The one we had previously is still made and sold around the world. This “newer model” has been around for years and is called Land Cruiser Prado outside of the United States. You would think Consumer Reports would know this.

Was excited at first for this but man under the hood it is a hot mess and it drives like a car. The trunk is pretty high with that fat battery and wondered why no sliding tray? Also the rear pop up window looks quite fragile and cant get past the cheapness feel.

There are Lexus LX600 and GX500 for better power trains butbhave to pay a little more.
A base Lexus GX is only 65k and comes with a big V6. I don't know why anyone would want to buy a 4-cylinder Land Cruiser over a GX for similar money.

The hybrid LC get significantly better mpg and more torque for one.

I too assumed the GX was the better deal, until I drove a Land Cruiser. After doing so, I called up the Lexus dealer and had them return my deposit. I have a Land Cruiser in my garage now.

Its hard to give CR much credibility when tomorrow they are testing toasters. As they complain more about a TRUCK driving like a TRUCK you have to wonder why they are here??? Land Cruiser owners, I have been one and I am about to be one again, know what Land Cruise is and what its for.

Great vehicle, but this is NOT "the" land cruiser - its just "a" land cruiser....the rest of the world gets this as the Land Cruiser Prado and still has the full size vehicle as a Land Cruiser. They alao make muktiple other varients in some global markets...the Land Cruiser name ks more than one model - its an entire vehicle group in Toyota's portfolio...i wish they sold both the Prado and the global Land Cruiser here...
They could have done a despec'd version of the full size one to being the price down...

It’s misleading and inaccurate to price anchor to the previous Land Cruiser. It was a different vehicle, that was much larger, more luxurious, and was priced out of the market. A better comparison to the previous Land Cruiser might be the Lexus LX. The current LC should be 10-15 cheaper especially with the USD-JPY exchange rate since this way released into the US market.

This is basically an overpriced 4runner now, but wait... the 2025 4runner in top tier trim will cost ~ the same. it'll come down to styling and packaging for those that can afford a new vehicle in this price range. personally leaning towards the GX550, but i don't like climate integrated into the screen. oh well.

The Land Cruiser will be like a wrangler. Overpriced, unrefined but will sell very well.
I'm sure CR predicted reliability would be high for the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser while so far I see 12 members in LC owners forum experiencing the vehicle going to limp mode with errors on dash like "Drive start control malfunction", :Hybrid system malfunction", "System malfunction visit your dealer". There are pics showing the errors on dash and vehicle towed. Toyota really need to rethink about reliability.
CR has changed and not for the better. They are biased towards vehicles and brands that get better MPG’s, have hybrids, smaller turbo engines, etc. in my opinion of course. 😂
You can find 12 drives on any vehicle with issues on any message board. Hell go on a Honda accord message board and there are issues. Not saying it will be great, but damn there are problems with ALL vehicles at times. My last 2014 Tacoma had 3 warranty repairs before 36k miles.
@@magnoliap5824They're not "biased" - all three of the things you mentioned only affect MPG and, possibly, the smoothness of the powertrain. The cars are rated in all categories, not just those. If you're too lazy to read their full road tests then that's your fault. None of you armchair experts seem to know what the term bias even means.
I’d hold off and buy the 2nd or 3rd year of it.
When CR rated the first Tesla at over 100% I lost all a lot of respect for them. Then reading cars don't qualify becouse of there own personal biased about not all models have safety features I lost all confidence in them.
Now there no more than entertainment.

Toyota cloth lasts forever. Leather will start cracking& tearing with time even if properly cared for.
