Billy Joel is one of the greatest lyricist in the history of music.

Absolutely! He tells stories with his lyrics that are universally true emotions, bringing the audience into the moment. He is a history buff and does reference historical events and people in some songs (Beau Brummell in ‘It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me’) and lots of them in “We didn’t Start the Fire.”

He complains though that he really didn't write a way for the song to end. It could go on and on and on. I don't think there is a musical genre that he has NOT written music for.

Billy played a few parties for Birthdays, Bat/Bar Mitzvah, but mostly played Bars/Lounges before the first Album had 😳 the Piano player from the Island on SNL singing 'She's Always a Woman to Me'! Released in 1973. Billy writes all his music and lyrics himself. He’s an all around musician, great playing, singing, music and lyrics. The man can do it all. His catalog is a very deep rabbit hole, but well worth diving in. He is very eclectic in his writing so no one particular style. He still gives a great concert at 74.

It's hard to fathom that a massive hitmaker like Billy Joel is unknown to the younger generations. When I was a kid there weren't many radio stations and the one I listened to played all genres and most decades of music. This is a rabbit hole worth going down. He is one of the best songwriters, singers, and musicians of all time.

This is Billy encore after every concert, for over 40 years now. As amazing as his musical catalog is, this song is special. You ever go to a karakee night, or an old time juke box joint, or a piano bar...and this song is a given. Is so catchy and tells such an amazing song, Billy hardly even sings it anymore. He just plays the music, and the audience does the rest. So good.

Ok son, you hooked me. I say son only because judging by your face you could be one of my grandsons.
It wasn't the song that hooked me it was your fair acknowledgement that you do like older songs.
Most young people absolutely refuse to listen to older music just because of arrogance, but you're refreshingly different.
Your parents should be proud, they did a good job.
Personally, I have a whole lineup of songs I'd like to get your reactions to and they've made reactors' legends by pulling in the largest subscribers and unique viewers. Trust me.
The first one I'd wish for is by a giant singer, song writer and actor. He's won multiple awards from different genres and Hollywood acclaim.
Sadly, being also a pilot he crashed his experimental aircraft in the ocean and died.
His name if you haven't already guessed is John Denver and most reactors start with Rocky Mountain High, but if you research John Denver titles you can close your eyes and pick with a dart and be sure to strike gold.
Anyway I'm all subscribed and buckled in. Take me home.😊
    PS. Love the MLB hat.

So, let's talk about those lyrics a bit. We start out with the old man who can't remember the song, but he knows that it made him feel good when he was younger. And he's still there. And then we're introduced to a series of regulars whose lives are going nowhere they really want to be going. They'll probably still be there thirty or forty years from now when they're the old man's age. And even our piano man is frustrated by his situation and cynical about the praise he's receiving. It's a sad song, but it was insanely popular when it came out, partly because the lyrics are so moving, partly because each character is made recognizable and sympathetic in just a few lines, and partly because the chorus is so rousing that you could "forget about life for a while."

Billy wrote this song himself, and it was release in 1973. Billy Joel had a contract dispute and took some time off from touring, but he loved playing and performing so he played in a piano bar under a fake name. This experience inspired him to write this song and it was a massive hit on his next album after his contract dispute was resolved. Note especially the lyric, "Man -- What are you doing here?" Some of his fans ran into him while he was doing the piano bar work and were shocked to see such a big star play in such a tiny bar.

    • @seanscanlon9067
      @seanscanlon9067 7 місяців тому +1

Sorry, not trying to be a dick here as you have most of the details right but the "man what are you doing here" line was more about customers recognising that Billy had too much talent to just be playing piano in a bar rather than they were fans recognising him, which he had to do to make ends meet and his wife at the time was waitressing there too......"And the waitress is practising politics".
He only did the job for six months after his debut album flopped due to the master tapes being recorded at the wrong speed and so it made his voice sound too high-pitched. The album did not sell well and he was not really famous at the time of playing piano in the bar, in order for anyone to recognise him.

Billy Joel's songbook is Gigantic! I'm pretty sure he writes most, if not all, of his songs. He singsvin many styles and sounds. He's been at it for about 50 years now. This is a huge rabbit hole if you decide to enter.

If you've never heard Billy Joel before this; wow; you are in for a rabbit hole full of musical genius and really entertaining videos, too. I don't know where to start with suggestions. Try some of these: Innocent Man, A Room Of Our Own, Pressure, Tell Her About It, Goodnight Saigon, We Didn't Start The Fire, River of Dreams; You May Be Right, Matter of Trust (really fun video) and New York State of Mind (Old Grey Whistle performance). If you're into mad piano, also from Old Grey Whistle Test, check out Root Beer Rag. Glad you loved this. He's a total badass; lyrics, music, musicianship, piano (including classical) and a performer, too. And what a band as well; masters, all.

Saw him in concert had the stage set up to sing even to the people behind the stage. Class act.
Think there's a song called Your My Home, my late wife loved.
He wrote Piano Man while working a NY bar as the piano player.

Every song of his you listen to, the lyrics will be awesome. Billy is the man and has a prolific career. So much amazing stuff to choose from. I would recommend the official video for Pressure and the live on Long Island performance of Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. Huge rabbit hole, so get ready.

This man has a HUGE catalog - HUGE! I went to see him in concert twice and everybody sings along to his songs - especially this one swaying to it as if you have a beer mug in your hand. But, yes, keep on going with him. You will continue to love each one!

Billy Joel’s “100th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden” aired on CBS in April 2024. One of the absolute best recorded concert performances ever! Find it, watch it, love it.🎶

The great thing about Billy Joel his songs approach life through lyrics that read like a story in Piano Man he introduces various "working stiffs" who go to that bar to hear The Piano Man to take a breather from the pace of life. The song is brilliant and highlights Billy Joel's singing and his musicianship on the piano. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't tap a foot or dance in some way to this great tune

I read an article stating that he hears new songs while he’s dreaming, then he wakes up and writes them. So, he dreams music.

The song is from 1973 and reflects a job he had as a young man, early in his career. I think this video was made in the 80s, based on his age, the fashions, and the fact that music videos didn't become common until then.
He's an extremely mainstream pop star in the U.S., but his songs have never been focused on teenage themes. He's always written about adults, in this case middle aged people who hang around in a bar.
