The chat acting like Ryan wasn't most people's favourite in the group by around 2020. He was better at games than most of them, his mad king persona was funny, and his personality was just spiky enough to make great content with the rest of the gang. It was completely out of left field when all the information came out, he was a classic wife guy after all. Just because we have hindsight now don't pretend as if we were always suspect of him

Ryan was for sure the top 2 or 3 of AH members back in the day. He was always entertaining. I get why people don't like him now, but he was deservedly popular in AH's golden era.

@jamesdulak3108 I was devastated when the news broke, I was still watching AH religiously on the RT app as a First member. Ryan was getting really popular with fans, I remember fan highlight videos of just him and then it all came crashing down. I haven't watched AH since. Though I listen to Michael's podcast

As someone who watched a ton of RoosterTeeth and Achievement Hunter in my late teens and early 20s, it really sucks to see how it all ended. Despite everything that happened and came out, I still look back on it positively but it serves as a good reminder that you are never fully aware of everything that's happening behind the scenes with some of your favourite content creators.

I think COVID was the final death knell. At least on the Achievement Hunter side, their move to being fully remote (100% understandable btw) removed a lot of the charm. It went from feeling like a group of friends to feeling like coworkers talking together (which they are)
I watched them for the VAST majority of my childhood and still look back on it fondly, it just sucks how everything slowly started to fade away

Some extra notes: the original group (Geoff, Gus, Burnie etc) didn't meet in college, but working at a call center for a tech company. Gus and Geoff started drunk gamers and asked Burnie for help to run the website for them, and became friends.
Gavin started the slo-mo guys UA-cam channel in order to get a visa so he could work at Roosterteeth.
Ray didn't leave just because he wanted to focus on streaming, but also because of Rooster teeth trying to claim his account as theirs due to some contractual bullshit or whatever, burn out from playing the same games all the time (Minecraft and gtaV weekly), and a horrible commute (also part of the cause of burnout) after switching offices. He would show up an hour before everyone so his partner could drop him off before she went off to work, and get picked up an hour after everyone else left.

Achievement Hunter was such a cornerstone of my childhood and shaped my humor, personality, and attitude when it comes to committing to your vision (even if they are flawed visions). I heard about the "beating a guy to death with his own skull" joke at school in 2007, which prompted me to look up Red vs. Blue. A video they had made for the Halo 3 beta was amongst the first I ever watched on UA-cam. I was a big fan of RvB, their podcast (Drunk Tank) and the comedy shorts they made throughout around 2009-2013 or so.
They hired way too many guys and lost their identity. When I started listening to their podcast, Jack Pattillo had just been hired. Those early employees: Gavin, Jack, Barbara, Monty were introduced one at a time with months in between. It was fun to become acquainted with a new personality and see how they would play off your existing favourites. As time went on, the hiring, got faster and faster, to where I'd click on a Rooster Teeth show and just see a bunch of strangers on my screen.
To me, it was the move to the huge office. Rooster Teeth Productions Production Studio was the good era. After that, it was a different thing to what I became a fan of in 2007.

My only experience of Rooster Teeth/Achievement Hunter was the early Minecraft lets plays, and the iconic Gavin and Michael playing horror games.
I will NEVER forget them playing Slenderman, where Gavin was in control of the mouse to change direction and Michael was using the keyboard to control the actual movement. Gavin freaked the fuck out and disconnected the keyboard when he jumped, and Michael was screaming at him so loud. Their argument over “torch” vs “flashlight” led to Gavin flashing the light, much to Michael’s annoyance, and said *”NOW* it’s a flashlight, hey-oooo!”
In their Minecraft playthrough, Gavin annoyed Michael so bad, Michael got up and literally tackled Gavin and you could hear him punching Gavin, and a faint “My-cool, no! Please, My-cool!!!” 🤣
That and the iconic “tower of pimps” war (just a stack of 4 gold blocks)
God that was so fucking long ago… 2012 I think? I had just entered high school. Damn.
    Peak content 😎👌🏻

This video is kind of strange. Like, the person recounting all this is getting the broad strokes right, but missing some fairly obvious stuff that I think is a key contributer to the downfall of the company. It also just makes it hard to want to watch the video.
The Let's Play channel started months after they started doing Let's Plays. The very earliest Let's Plays started on Rooster Teeth. In fact, the Minecraft let's plays only started because of Rage Quit, the series created for Michael Jones specifically, also hosted on the main Rooster Teeth channel.
Why is this important? Because they never focused on UA-cam enough. Rooster Teeth is a huge channel that slowly died because it was a mess and they never had a clear vision for it. And this started to impact the Let's Play channel. Because the Let's Play Family was originally supposed to be hosted on the Let's Play UA-cam channel, and the fans hated this. The videos got tons of down votes. Eventually they only hosted the Achievement Hunter videos there, but then Achievement Hunter spun off another UA-cam channel for the live action stuff, and there's a lot of other stuff that is a bit too much to get into right now, but the big problem is how disjointed it all felt.
UA-cam was an after thought for Rooster Teeth. The Rooster Teeth website was their focus. Specifically the sponsors who originally paid to fund the company's output. But here's what I think killed Rooster Teeth. That eventually became "First". This is important because it took away the idea that you were paying to support the content you liked. Now, you're paying for a streaming service. And here's the problem. UA-cam and Twitch were the places people watched content. And Patreon was where people paid to support creators. Reddit and Twitter and eventually Discord were where you went to engage with communities. But Rooster Teeth never evolved. They doubled down on pushing their website and spending literally millions on "premium" content that most of the time failed to garner attention.
Ray had a Twitch stream that was eventually aqquired by Rooster Teeth before he later quit, but Roooster Teeth never streamed to Twitch. And never really did so for UA-cam. Instead it was always on the site. By the time Fullscreen bought them, the company was already bleeding money. They desperately needed someone to focus on sustainable growth and focused output, but instead you had a company founded by incredibly creative and forward thinking people that never evolved and tried to grow into a mini Netflix.
The people in this video seem nice, and they seem interesting, but it's a pretty boring video. If you never followed Rooster Teeth it's fine but as someone who did, this comes accross as someone who read a few articles for an afternoon and wrote up a script in a week. When even obvious stuff is wrong, I just don't care. It's sloppy at best and soulless at worst.

So like, it's sad that RT is gone. But the reality is that it needed to go to better serve the people that were creating the content people loved. Just about every show that was going at the end *is still going* just with a potentially different name, and the creators are receiving more money. There is no larger conglomerate taking a cut, there is no failing podcast to prop up, there is no need to put money away for another part of the budget. Video games are still being played, apple scrumping is still going strong, and podcasts are still all over the place.

Now I’m 27 and I got to see it crumble and it’s so sad but I am so happy to have the memories. I legit almost cried watching this video. Oh man. This will hit deep for me. I'm in my mid twenties, grew up watching AH, Let's Play, Fun Haus more than I watched Rooster Teeth. Which I did watch and listen to a lot of. I've gone to RTX twice, and even have some photos with them, and conversations with them.
Man, what a pity has unfolded for them.

  • @Tanner_Ross
    @Tanner_Ross 7 днів тому +2

I used to be a huge fan of RoosterTeeth/AH. I'm turning 20 soon, which means I was watching these videos before I really should've been. I watched every Minecraft Let's Play episode. I watched their GTA series, and even used advice they talked about to get Criminal Mastermind. And I watched all of the videos where they'd just be messing around in the office. When I was younger I dreamt about working with AH one day. Sitting down and playing GTA with Gavin, Ryan, and Jack. And now it sucks knowing that dream will never happen.
In my mind, the real downfall was when Ryan and Adam were exposed to be horrible people. They were such big personalities on their respective channels, that when the news broke it shocked everyone. It hurt so much hearing what Ryan had done, because he was always my favorite member. I'd look forward to every video he was in. After the news broke it became hard to watch some of my favorite videos, because he was in most of them. After a while it became hard to watch the channels all together.
If there's anything to take away from all of the drama with RoosterTeeth, it's that the person on camera is usually putting on a character. When that camera is off they live a whole different life.

during the pandemic so much of roosterteeth, or at least the part i still pay attention, pivoted to podcasts, which compared to all other productions, must be the cheapest way to produce content. with that pivot to podcasts it felt like roosterteeth had stopped the bleeding. so i was really surprised when it shutdown. The sliver lining is that many of those podcasts were allowed to go independent and keep their backlog of content

I think Michael Jones had one of the most interesting takes right after it was announced that they would be shutting down in that at least this time it was everyone all at once not just slowly having to lay people off. I do think that people should give some of the projects that have started after the shut down a try because they are still some of the funniest people out there!

One of the fascinating things about achievement hunter/lets play is that a lot of their former members went on to have success outside of roosterteeth. Ray narvaez jr, jeremy dooley, and matt bragg all became successful twitch streamers that stream to thousands of viewers daily. Gavin free worked on slow mo guys and various movie productions while with rooster teeth and since moving on has made a podcast with geoff ramsey that has a dedicated fanbase. Most other former members are still on the interent in some way whether it be podcasts or other forms with various levels of success.
To me it shows that achivement hunter specifically had the potetnial to be even more successful but failed due to meddling and mismanagement.
They had a dedicated fanbase that failed to grow when their content got more and more expensive to make. A common thing that was prevalent throughout rooster teeths history

  • @TheMarkoSeke
    @TheMarkoSeke 3 дні тому

Slow Mo Guys wasn't just a thing Gavin was doing randomly on the side, he started doing it because if it got successful enough he could use it as a reference in his visa application, which he wanted in order to move to the USA to work for Rooster Teeth, which was his dream, since he was a fan of theirs from the start, when he was very young. Truly a crazy story.

As I recall, Achievement Hunter's let's play-style content was initially on the Achievement Hunter channel, but they moved to posting to the Let's Play channel as they were posting so much of both content that was and wasn't let's plays, with the two not necessarily having the same audience, that it made more sense to split them. Them being able to get that username was because years prior, when let's plays as a genre were just starting, Geoff saw that no one had taken it yet and swooped it up.

It's really sad how things ended I have whole childhood memories attached to them without having to watch them. My introduction to Red vs. Blue was they actually had CDs of the early seasons of RVB they'd sell in places like gamestop and my mom got it thinking since it was my favorite game series I'd enjoy it. Then when she heard me watching it she immediately cut me off of watching it for the language. Eventually I snuck and grabbed it and watched it on my own time but that was the last time I ever saw the case or the cd for it. They probably threw it away not wanting me to get my hands on it again but since that time I've obviously caught up on the series and man what a crazy ride it was with these guys. Was watching them before my double digits and that's crazy to me.

I wish this video was in like 2 or three parts. There was SO MUCH that was skipped and left out because of it only being an hour. They got the "Tower of Pimps" into actual Minecraft. More of an exploration of RWBY. The situation with Jack getting robbed at the very start. Not even a mention of how Meg Turney was on both SourceFed to RoosterTeeth. Also mentioning that the same group that Warner bought out the owners of SourceFed AND RoosterTeeth, shutting both of them down eventually. Looking at that timeline a little closer too. There wasn't a mention of how Gavin moved to America and lived with Geoff for a while, Geoff becoming Sober, Burnie leaving, Micah exposing what had been going on etc etc.
Still, was nice to see it all

Season 1 was _fine,_ not great, not awful (better than a lot of skeptics thought it would be but not as good as you'd hope given the voice talent). Season 2 was released with HBO Max and that one _really_ flopped hard, the story was all over the place, characters didn't make sense, etc. Season 2 was also released in 2021 so it was made during the pandemic so suffered a lot for that too.

Roosterteeth and Achievement Hunter exist, retroactively to me, as a cautionary tale about self-awareness in the company mindset. Because, like it was stated, Roosterteeth became this big company while still working with a "small business" mindset. Similarly with the environment. When Roosterteeth started I would argue the temperament used then carried over to now when it NEEDED to change. Geoff has gone on recorded stating how he regretted who he was in the past and it paints an idea of a company who, if changes had been caught and made earlier, MAYBE...just MAYBE would still be around and thriving today, but couldn't make the changes fast enough. Whether because of the timeframe of the scandals themselves or because of how fast and how quickly Roosterteeth expanded or some other reasons.
