  • YORK PARISH #14: NABURN
Welcome to Naburn or “Nabburn”, a delightful riverside settlement situated four miles to the South of York. It lies on the eastern side of the River Ouse and was historically part of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Since 1996 its been part of the City of York - are you noticing a theme with some of these York parishes yet?
Naburn was a predominantly agricultural community with local farms prospering on the rich alluvial soil that surrounds the village. Until the mid 20th century Naburn was almost completely owned by one family - The Palmes - who lived at Naburn Hall. Their history is well documented and they have links to both Somerset and to Belvoir Castle. A lot of modern day Naburn exists as it is thanks to the family and in this episode we’ll discuss why.
Classed as being within the floodplain of the River Ouse, most of the parish is low lying, and to the West of the main village is an area of extensive ings. The Ouse forms the entire parish boundary on the West. There are two streams which feed the Ouse here - Howden Dike and Wood Dike.
On the Northern boundary was Naburn Hospital, a psychiatric hospital formerly known as York City Asylum, until its closure in 1988. Also to the North is a sewage works. Opened in 1895, it once had its very own narrow gauge railway. And speaking of railways, there’s an old station here as well, sited along a very familiar trail
This is Naburn then, time for a walk I think!

In a north Yorkshire episode of the 80s game show, Treasure Hunt, they actually started from Naburn Lock.

A beautiful village and the folk are so nice and friendly. The school was under threat of closeure, but finally was saved on a few weeks back. The old reading room is now also a shop so that is good for the locals. I've been there many, many times and never get bored of the place. If you ever want a look in the church let me know, I'll see what I can do.

Thumbs up from me on the introduction of the drive-in. Fits with a comment I made on the Long Bennington episode that some longer shots enables the viewer to get a better perspective of a village/town. 👍
