YORK PARISH #15: DEIGHTON
This is one if, if not the smallest parish in York. Welcome to Deighton, a tiny village located just off the A19 on York’s Southern border with the District of Selby. Other than the A19 itself, it consists of one main street which is a dead end, and very few basic amenities. There is a small village green, a parish noticeboard and a pub, but other than that, it’s mainly residential. The parish also includes the greater part of the hamlet of Crockey Hill which is located up the A19 to the North.
Once part of the East Riding, and then Selby, Deighton became part of York in 1996. Deighton’s history is not very well documented. The village’s name is Old English and it means “farmstead surrounded by a ditch”. It was once a township of neighbouring Escrick. In prehistoric and Roman times the Escrick moraine, on which Deighton stands, served as routeway across the marshy vale. In the early Middle Ages much of the area lay within the royal forest of Ouse and Derwent.
The most prominent families were the Robinsons, the Dentons and the Braithwaites. Part of the village was later owned by the Thompsons of Escrick. Its sits within an area of very fertile soil - a result of deposits during the last Ice Age. This means it’s a great place for farming, so there’s a few tractors out here! In 2016, Deighton took advantage of that by hosting the 63rd annual World loughing Contest.

Cycled to Deighton on a Gainsborough Aegir Cycling Club ride had my bithday lunch at the Fish & chip shop that was a good few years ago
