Great video! We just discovered your channel, and we agree with many of the things mentioned in this video. In our case , we don't see ourselves traveling as long as you are. Loosing the connection to family and friends is to big of a deal. I think there is a risk of living in a parallel bubble if you keep on going for very long. I don't know if you see it as well. Thank you for sharing!!

Yes, I think if you don't make an effort to connect with family/friends it could lead to living in a bit of a bubble. It can be difficult to deal with relationships changing, on both sides, but in our experience the growth has improved the relationships. Cheers!

Very insightful video and I certainly relate to many of your points. I spent more than 10 years dreaming of living this lifestyle, then 3 years ago it finally came to fruition. I almost quit after 2 years because it wasn’t what I thought it would be, but so glad I didn’t. Instead, I just readjusted the way I travel and sought out purpose and routine as a way to find contentment.

Great talk! So many of the things you brought up resonate with us. Especially giving up the home base. For the past few years we've traveled extensively for up to 6 months at a time and for various reasons would come home for a couple months. So nice to come home yet the itch to head out again always returns so quickly! It's really difficult paying those house-related bills while we're on the road for 8-9 months out of the year and the talk of getting rid of it all comes up a lot...one day I imagine we'll just sell most of it, store a few things and hit the road full time for a while. Safe travels!

Loved this one guys. There's no perfect life, correct way of living. Everything has good moments and bad ones. Even in a regular (classic?) lifestyle, most of the negatives aren't said openly either. But it's nice to know that an adventure life isn't all perfect. In the end, it depends how you confront that not so great moment and continue on.

Thank you for sharing that. I agree on the fallacy of a 'perfect life' and that a dream trip will somehow solve all other problems. Every problem was at some prior point a solution.
The overcoming of obstacles is a lot of the enjoyment of life for me.

    Great video as always TK!
Appreciate the experience based, drama free, down to earth advice.
Especially since I am retiring early in 23 days. 🚶‍♂️🏊‍♂️🧎‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏕🛶🚵‍♀️ 🛫🚀🌞
Have fun on the upcoming trips! 🇨🇦
P.S. Subletting is another option. Provides a home base, but not paying rent whilst traveling.
And, an apartment to come home to.

Another outstanding video! Thanks for sharing this. These are the kinds of things that so many people who promote activities on youtube never want to mention, but it's just real life. It's not a bed of roses. I spent just about 5 months or so the beginning of last year living out of my 4Runner with my pup, from Colorado to Cabo, to Maine, etc. Finally landed in a small studio in Washington state. So my experience is incredibly limited compared to yours, but many of the things you mentioned are the reason my pup and I are not still living out of the truck. The stress of not knowing if you'll be interrupted while sleeping every night in a new place can't be understated, at least for me. I worked for decades in various emergency services, and I would rather work a 36 hour shift than possibly be woken out of a sleep to have to respond someplace. Living on the road where that nagging worry that you'll be contacted in the middle of the night by law enforcement, drunks, or whatever was just not healthy for me. Secondly, I can't imagine life without my pup, but traveling with her was incredibly stressful. Always worrying about if she was stressed, comfortable with the temperature, safe in the vehicle while I ran in someplace, etc. Sorry for the long post, I could go on and on, but basically I just wanted to say I respect the two of you incredibly, and I'm so happy you guys have a good relationship in spite of so many life stresses. I'm rooting for you both. :)

Like you said this life is not for everyone and not always a bed of roses. We both would love to have a furry buddy but the thought of just what you described keeps us from jumping into that. Someday we will. Life is full of chapters. Enjoy each one while you are in it. Anyway thank you for the comment it's always nice to know we aren't alone! Cheers!

This was a great session to get some thoughts about the real life being on a trip like you are doing. What I was found great was the thought you Tim started from minute 24:15 onwards. A decision which has been made by my wife was that there has to be always a homebase to be able to get back to. Like an insurance you may or may not need but might be able to give you a better feeling. Wish you for the future all the best and hope that the beautiful moments will fill up most of the time to give the bad moments not too much space. Travel save and all the best - Markus

Awesome video, we're getting ready to overland like you guys did with Goose, we rode our motorcycle to Alaska 4 years ago, and that trip changed our lives, we recently retired and are planning our nomad life, we have been getting rid of everything we have, and don't miss anything, we are not attached to any material possessions, we truly feel we're ready for what live our overland life, we're in our early 60s, and we know right now we have our go-go years and later will come the slow-go years then the no-go years, so we have to go now!

This was a great idea. One interesting thing that resonated with me is how several of the downsides and pitfalls of full time travel also apply to everyday life, traveling or not. Traveling offers the opportunity to gain a new perspective, but it’s still up to is to use that as a motivator for actual change. At any rate, well done!

I love this video. I have heard before of the advice about maintaining friendships while on the road however, this may be the first honest video about the extra stress on relationship with one’s partner while on the road. I am getting ready to travel with my wife and two dogs full-time in three months for three years. This reminds me that I will need to check on how she’s doing or feeling more often than when we have a permanent home base. We have more than our fair share of fights while living a typical life and so will need to put in a conscious effort in our relationships when on the road. Thank you!

  • @d37tae

Thanks for all the advice and experience! Sorry that it doesn't get the views it deserves, but the people that need it get a lot out of it!
A few notes on the idea of flying home, for people that could be in a situation similar to ours:
After our last few "big trips", we have decided to bake some flights home, and an expected time and frequency at home, into our next "big trip" plans and budget. Not sure if it is going to result in too much "gotta be here by then" stress (as we would like to avoid more of that) but the idea is 6-8ish weeks "at home" a year, in 2x trips; one around Christmas, and one in summer when more of the family has free time.
We are going to see if those 2x 3-5 week visits will help break-up that "homesickness" feeling that builds up, and if the sitting in one spot for that long will help refill the "I can't wait to get back out there and start moving" feeling.
The other idea is that we will be able to ski/snowboard around the Christmas visit, and (Dive, cycle, etc) around the Summer visit, with the hopes of also filling out that lack-of-variety that you had touched upon. (Instead of driving a giant vehicle to carry that junk with us).
We are lucky enough to be at the point where the increased cost (loss of travel months) still leaves us with the opportunity to travel for a while.
4x flights per year might add up to, say, ~3x months of travel cost.
Our variable costs while traveling have been 42% for Fuel and 17% for sleeping somewhere (not often). The hope is that the ~60% reduction in monthly cost from these two multiplied by about 2 months should offset around half of the extra money we spend to fly home.
Meaning we could be not earning money for 12 months (10 travel, 2 home) where someone else could do 13-14 (all travel).
It is a loss of travel time, for sure, but running out of money isn't our issue right now. It is more like running out of steam.
The alternatives for the "steam" could be a larger and more comfy vehicle, or more "comfy" time in AirBnB's/etc. Both of which seem like a more expensive and worse fit on paper at the time being.
This whole idea "works" because we have the benefit of being able to stay with family for free at a few different locations, and we will be keeping a cheap fuel efficient economy car back home to be able to use.
The more times per year you fly, and the less time you spend "home", the less it makes sense. Which is where we have our twice and 2x months numbers from.
That is the idea on paper at least! We will see if it works.
I thought this "new plan" calculation might be useful for someone trying to work on the same kinda problems.
We have only been able to get to this plan because we track our expenses very precisely. Without our spreadsheets, I think the idea would have sounded "too expensive" because the flight tickets are so much money.
    Save travels!
