That's not what we found in 8 years of ownership and 200,000 km driven in different situations and configurations. We found it depends on what it is. Regards.
Nice comparison video. I was just joking with Matt today that if I had been in charge of our vehicle we would have a VW van with a RTT. Obviously it was good that was not left up to me 😉 I really like that solar powered vent.
I cannot believe how much these are. Its 2 plastic molds with a hinge and fabric joining them, right? How could it possibly cost so much? Its like 4 grand I think. Plus its not even very big and it should rise vertically so it at least as the maximum amount of space. They sure are sacrificing a lot for 4 wheel drive. Guess its worth it because the vehicle they're using is probably quite frugal on fuel and quite reliable. A huge problem when something costs a lot is theft. You're a huge target whenever you leave the vehicle. That means you're imprisoned to that vehicle unless you can find VERY secure storage. And how easy is that when you're in poor, 3rd world countries? Very! If it gets stolen just imagine the headache of replacement when you're in an isolated area like South America. Imagine the shipping cost alone to get it there. I wonder how difficult it would be to make something like this out of 2 pieces of wood and fabric and an X type support system. Wind protection would probably be the main challenge. It would be hard to stabilize it. That might be the reason they opted to have one end "down". Its an anchor and would make it very stable against crosswinds. Is using a camping tent really that awful? They sure offer a huge amount of space and compact down to a very small size. Granted, setting up in the rain or snow would be miserable. But then again cramming 2 people in such a small space is a challenge itself.
Damn, I thought I found the right tent for my JKU then come to find out from the JB website almost ALL tents are DISCONTINUED 😒! Prices were discounted but still pricey for being discontinued items. I hate to be SOL when it times for parts replacements. Great review and really awesome tent! Happy Trails...

Hey guys, great to see you upgraded. We have a Autohome Columbus RTT and are loving it. Keep up the great videos. We will follow along :)
We just had a look online and the Autohome looks great! Very similar to what we have actually! We are sure you will have a great time camping in it! Thank you for following, mate!
Just found your channel and I loved the tent review. Silly question for you. Are you concerned about security while sleeping in your tent? I would love to switch to a rooftop tent such as the one reviewed but maybe I have watched one too many scary movies because I am genuinely concerned about "bad guys" while I am sleeping and for that reason I prefer a hard shell camper with lockable doors. What are your thoughts on this?
Security is always a concern and in some spots it definitely feels safer in the car. In gas stations, for example, where there is a flux of people during the night, we always go in the car. But if we are in a safe spot we love being in the tent! Cheers
These are great, for sure, but a little bit cramped for how my wife and I like to sleep.....with enough space to roll over and not wake th other up. So we’re going with the iKamper, which is a hard shell fold open tent that takes just about as much time to open. Those early versions of roof top tents like you had, with the soft cover you have to zip on, takes forever to open and put away. Some people think 7 mins to open 14 to put away, and this is after years of practice, is not a lot of time. But, when you have to do it over and over again it really gets old after awhile. Especially when you have the option of having a system that opens in 30 seconds to 1 minute. The iKamper opens up to about a King/Queen size bed, I know it’s at least a queen size, and they state it sleeps 4. To my wife and I that translates to “sleeps 2” :)
Hey Overland Way. Great video and you raised all the points I had in my mind about my clamshell tent and why I want a hard shell. In a couple shots I noticed you had solar panels on the tent? Any details....Like wattage and how you secured them to the top of the tent? Cheers & keep up the good work - Graham.
Hey mate, we are glad to found the video useful. We attached the new flexible solar panels (2 x 100W sheets) using stainless steel screws tapped through the tents fiber glass shell and sealed it with silicon to maintain the whole thing waterproof. We've been through a couple of tropical storms and not a drop of water made its way through. Cheers
excellent video. I have a Delica just like yours. They are so solid. We did 5700 miles around Scandinavia and eastern European countries last year. All within three weeks. Not one bit of trouble. Keep up the good work :-)
Awesome! My only concern is that it's smaller than a normal RTT. The one I currently have is about the size of a queen. It' was really hard to tell in the video, but is it about that same size? It may have looked a bit smaller. I'm 6ft, and my wife is 5'6.
Jonny Herrera Hi Jonny, you are right! We should have talked about size. Ours is a standard size Space model, which fits us two perfectly. I am 5'10" and Michaela about 5'4", so not the tallest people though. If you need more space however, all models come in XL sizes too, which are much larger. If you check out James Baroud's website they have the specific dimensions of each model there. Our old RTT was definitely bigger inside, but the construction and arrangement of the James Baroud make it hardly noticeable. Maybe the extra head room and the massive windows give the impression it's bigger. Cheers!
Thanks for your jamesbaroud space tent upgrade. Can i ask you for the price you paid for it? Because we live in Chile, we want compare prices in the usa with Chile (so far i know there is no dealer in Chile). Thanks
We used a basic Thule roof rack that unfortunately aren't manufactured anymore. We used 3 bars for more security, but you could get away with 2 no problems.
Wow, just love your video. First i've seen What a cool couple, awesome Delica and best choice of RTT ;) Big sub from me :) You were wise selecting a white on, the black ones will condensate on hot sunny days and the moisture will rust mounting hardware and its also been known to melt the coated mattress.
Just one question which is off-topic: How does one just take years off from employment and be able to do cool stuff like this--Without ringing up massive credit card debt?
Paul Standaert, fair question! We worked very hard for years to save up. Drive a 3 thousand dollar van which was completely modified by ourselves. Gathered support from companies to reduce our setup costs with products and other things. Work while we travel to make some money on the road. But the key... Spend as little as we need to have an enjoyable time. It might sound like an impossible thing but it's rather doable.
That sounds like the life. There are far too many 1st world people who simply over spend and wonder why they are broke all the time. I am hoping to do stuff like this when I retire, so hopefully the body holds up well enough. But I am thinking that I should have done it when I was young instead. I should have my home paid off by age 40, and that may be when I take some kind of sabbatical. I got ya beat though... for the last 10 years, I've been driving around $600 vehicles. I just bought a $5,000 one because.... well... I am getting too old for jalopies.
Paul Standaert That's awesome, Paul! It's not about how young you are when you get to do it. It's about making sure you get to do it whenever you can, the way you can and however it pleases you. We just want to encourage people to think a little outside of that box society puts over our heads! We don't need to leave everything behind or go full on hippies. Neither we should think driving the world should be everyone's dream. The truth is that whatever your deal might be it's well worth investing your energy into it. Let us know if we can be of any assistance with yours! All the best!
Looks like a great tent, but one of the reasons I like my RRT, which is similar to your old one, is that you can get in and out while it is raining without getting wet. Always liked the idea of your new tent but the lack of shelter on the way in and out put me off. But thanks for showing us your setup.
Yeah, that's definitely something to consider! We totally get what you mean. That's something that would be nice to have, a little protected port over the ladder. Having said that we personally found much better to get wet for 10 to 20 seconds while getting in and out the tent than spending 20 minutes under the rain trying to pack it away. Not to mention how horrible windy/rainy nights were in the old tent compared to this one. But we totally get what you mean! Great point!
Hi there, thanks for the reply. I see in another review of your new tent the guy said it had a memory foam mattress 75mm thick. How is that going for you? I find my hide density foam in my tent far to hard and am thinking of getting a memory foam one.
We find the mattress that comes in the James Baroud rather comfortable. It's actually better than the 100mm thick mattress we had in the other tent. Even after 30 days in a row sleeping in the JB we never felt like "we need a proper bed!", even though a proper bed is always welcome I must say lol
Attach tarp to top shell in rear corners and to “tarp poles” away and down from top, secure with cords and tent pegs. you now have a way to do it and stay dry, but that would create more wet gear if you are moving immediately so I would only use if staying in that spot until the rain stops...
You have to choose one model or the other. The 45degree angle one (Space) has higher head room. The rectangular version is a little lower. Both would be great!
On the road for 3 years, 21min a day minimum (I own a similar tent and I'm nearly 10min slower) is just shy of 23,000 minutes dealing with a tent - or 383 hours - or just shy of 16 days. But they're not even able to use it, because of the inconvenience. I'm looking to make the switch to a James Baroud hard shell or something similar, because of the 30s opening/closing. I was camped at a pretty remote beach when someone started rapidly shooting 2 handguns just around the bend from us at 2am. You'd best believe that 20min takedown time was the worst thing ever.
Hugh Jazz Hi mate, we leave in it all the bedding, including pillows, sheets and a large blanket. Also leave a small fan and other things. You can probably have 10 cm worth of storage. In the rain it's awesome. The only downside is that there isn't a little porch for you to hide under before climbing to the top. So you get wet for a few seconds. Still is considerably better than what we had before. We've slept in it in very windy conditions. When our old tent would be making so much noise (if not teared apart) we would have given up. So all in all we are actually pretty stoked with how much more comfortable it is. We've been using it daily in Mexico as it's much cooler than sleeping in the van. It's brilliant. Cheers
Unfortunately James Baroud didn't pay us anything but that would be rather helpful hehehe I guess we just have different opinions! Thanks for sharing yours with us, Jazie! Have a great day!

Great review and awesome editing guys! Definitely I will buy the same tent and the van : ) when the time comes. Hugs!
Aqui no Brasil esta barraca está R$ 8500 ou seja 2600 Dólares
A campingsworld.com.br tem uma parecida, acho que custa uns R$ 5000,00.

You didn’t say the most important part of the video that everyone would of course be wondering ? What’s the price !
They go for about 3,999 USD. Sorry I missed it!
shut the fuck up! you could get a sweet cargo trailer to camper from a company and have lots of room and no set up for less $$$
Having a Syncro I have no experience with roof tents- but would it not be nicer to have your head on the other (higher) side??
Many thanks. Have a Good trip.
So u can have the option of all sides raised or have the roof on 45degree angle?
You have to choose one model or the other. The 45degree angle one (Space) has higher head room. The rectangular version is a little lower. Both would be great!
this was a pretty good ad... not...
Thanks for this, have been trying to decide between hard shell and the soft shell versions for ages!! Thumbs up from me!!

Wow... Thank you guys!
A lot of faring so let the hot smelly air out use the fan .

Hi guys thanks for the video. Like the idea of the sola panels on top. What size are they?
Hi Gary, they are 2 x 100W flexible panels. There is a video here showing their instalation. Perfect fit for our RTT! Cheers!

有樂趣很棒的生活方式羨慕你們
How much bedding can you leave in it?
What has it been like in rain? Blowing in sideways?
Warmth?
Cheers
A waste of money. $3600??? Seriously though 20 something mins out of your day? Okay so how much did James Baroud pay you guys? 🤔
Unfortunately James Baroud didn't pay us anything but that would be rather helpful hehehe I guess we just have different opinions! Thanks for sharing yours with us, Jazie! Have a great day!
Thanks! Happy travels
Thanks for watching Simon! Have a great one
Quick question where do you guys get the money to fund the trip was it saved or do you guys just do you tube videos or how do you guys do it
epenaloza52 Hi there... We saved before the trip but try to offset as much as we can working on the road. So far so good. Cheers
I go a bit further with that. Being a much older person, my thoughts are that one should work first for a reward such as this. I can tell you, everyone, that what they are doing is definitely not cheap. Certainly not enough to have actually saved that much in their still young lives. Work on the road is not plenty full either and only helps to pay the every day expenses.Me thinks, the had won lotto or otherwise some irresponsible parent is paying for it. Sorry, have your fun but I don't agree with it as you haven't got a clue what life is all about yet. Old fashioned ?.................... sure but it works better than to have half a dozen credit cards. I paid A$ 6000 for my identical JB here in Perth, Western Australia, in 2015 and they thought nothing of just changing it as the original on their roof was " too much trouble " . For Pete's sake !!!
Does one really need to set up their tents in less than 2-5 minutes, or even 30 seconds? Seems like everyone wants instant gratification in setting up their tents in a rediculous amount of time. If it were me, I'd savor those moments when I could take my time in setting up the tent, and getting my camp squared away. NOW, if you're in a blinding rainstorm, and you have to get shelter up before you freeze to death; then yes setting up your tent is an admirable feat..... So why not stop and relax....
Hi James, that's awesome you enjoy the tedious work of putting the old style tents up and packing them away. That will save you a lot of money!
