    "This couldn't be made today"
"Maybe it should be made today, keep it part of that bygone era"
Honestly, Chappelle show was barely able to be made back then. The pressure from the popularity he was gaining in short time, an audience that expected a lot and many wanting just catchphrases, the studio wanting more catchphrase type sketches and fratboy humor, the more critical takes on the show that pretty much led to Dave thinking/realizing he was being laughed at than laughing with parts of the show's white audience. It's kind of a miracle the show even existed and the legacy it left was great, but Dave had to fight for his show to survive with his vision, until he just gave up fighting after round 2.
I think commentary surrounding Chappelle's show can maybe lead to deeper thinking and wider topics than the show itself presented. Dave wanted to be goofy with a racial edge it seems, not too much more than that when it comes to purposeful social commentary.
I feel like my comment is a lot of bs, but I'll stick with it

I agree that the show itself led to more intelligent humor and conversation than the show itself ever probably expressed which is too bad, Chappelle himself is a very intelligent and interesting dude but I can see how trying to make a show under somebody else's rules who is paying for everything. That seems... difficult at best, and as far as I have seen with my fave shows, to limit intelligent creators all the time!

I always liked the Prince sketch more than the Rick James one, but that's probably because I really, REALLY like absurd, subversive twists. Prince becoming a magical basketball god and hovering in place at the basket before serving pancakes to everyone is just...just perfect. His team constantly having smoke following them is hilarious.
And I'm glad you brought up the Love Contract, I remember having a similar thought process of "Oh, this is kinda funny!" and then that ending stinger, and it's...well, it's YOUR reaction.

this is interesting to watch in light of the comments dave made in his new special defending JK Rowling and saying he is also a TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist). I got some of those vibes from one of his more recent specials where he had some jokes about trans people that to me reflected how out of touch he was with these types of people since his jokes mostly amounted to him saying he doesn't understand the trans movement although they weren't outright transphobic from what I remember. which makes sense to me given how wealthy and successful he is though it doesn't excuse it. it's just unfortunate to see someone who I hold in such high regard come out to especially say he doesn't support trans people and pretty much deny their identity. he's entitled to his opinions, and I'm not the type of person who now finds his old stuff retroactively unwatchable as a result of his opinions (I still enjoy his older standup/Chapelles show), but the fact that he's been so increasingly outspoken on saying that he especially doesn't support the rights of a certain group of people has really made me lose interest in supporting or watching his stuff lately unfortunately.
in any case, this video was an interesting watch as always and I always appreciate hearing your thoughts on the matter dude.

I love Dave just as much as anyone else and that's what makes it that much more disappointing to hear him defend somebody like JK Rowling while simultaneously not understanding why people would be upset by his remarks. Now I'm not saying I think he's out right transphobic but he is extremely out of touch and obviously hasn't made much effort to understand the trans experience.

Where do I come out of that special being afraid of trans people or hating them?

    • @anthonyhenriques7654
      @anthonyhenriques7654 2 роки тому +14

@@andrewteague114 how does him contradicting himself make anything that he said any better? You can't conflate transness with black face and then just because you tell a story about your relationship with a trans person make what you said okay. in the statements I pointed out in my previous comment aren't the only problematic things he said especially if you include his previous specials in that conversation. Now I don't think any of what he said came from a place of hate but it came from a place of deep misunderstanding. If he had made equivalent comments about almost any other minority group it wouldn't have been okay but since transphobia is still so socially acceptable it's fine I guess. I truly hope he grows as a person and learns to understand what it means to be trans but when you're out here defending people like JK Rowling - and subsequently being defended by the likes of Tucker Carlson - you may just wanna do some self-reflection and evaluation. you can't just cherry pick one positive thing he said about the trans community and use that to excuse all the other terrible things he said.

I was a teenager when Chappelle's Show aired, living on a military base overseas (father was in the Air Force at the time). We lived in an on-base apartment of sorts and those who had grills lined them up on the side of the building, so it often functioned as an unofficial communal space. One evening my dad and I (both white, my dad with red hair/blue eyes me a blonde) were out grilling talking/laughing about a recent episode of Chappelle's Show. One other person was grilling beside us, I think a high ranking enlisted black Army personnel (it was a joint-branch base, my dad was a high ranking Air Force enlisted personnel), a person whom I'd seen my dad talking with before and I figured knew each other.
When this gentleman heard what we were talking about, he interrupted and asked "Wait, y'all watch Chappelle's Show?" My dad replying something like "Yeah, that guy is freaking hilarious." To which this guy kind of smiled and nodded and said, "You know what? Y'all are alright." It's a moment that's stuck with me for reasons more nuanced than I can properly elaborate or that anyone here would care about even if I could, but I do believe that, at least at that time, only the joining thread of Chappelle's Show could have allowed it to happen.

I think the legacy of the Racial Draft episode is interesting. Cuz the premise is explicitly about mixed-race identity but one of the final jokes that breaks the sketch was trading condeleza rice and Colin Powell for OJ Simpson.
But when people referenced it for years after, I almost always see a focus on the last part. We end up focusing on the idea of “trading away” individuals out of our own racial group because of their actions or persona. And we lose the consideration of mixed race identity altogether. Like people trying to trade away Candice Owens in the racial draft or something.
Idk just something that I always noticed, like I think the point of the sketch gets lost a lot lol

AFAIK, the reason he stopped was because he felt too many of the jokes were mocking black people themselves, rather than mocking stereotypes used against them (and other people lower in the white-supremacy hierarchy). I didn't know many black people that liked the show, but I didn't know any white young people who didn't dig it, and while old white people are very openly racist, young white people tend to like discreet racism, like a sketch by a black guy that sometimes edges towards offensive, but because the creator is black we can all just laugh at the poor stupid people.
I think if I saw the mini-clip of the guy mowing the lawn saying 'titties', I'll still laugh, but there are some very cringe moments, though the whole was very funny to me when I was younger. I think it's a mix of top level stuff with actually racist stuff, alongside everything inbetween, but my experience with racism is limited, I just know that racism adjacent white people loved that show to death (literally, as I point out above, it's part of why he canceled the show).

Clayton Bigsby is incredibly clever, not just funny. To me, it captures the spirit of a classic speech by Malcolm X, entitled "House Negro, Field Negro". (It's a speech one just watch regardless of what one's race is) But Chappelle's masterful comedic disguise make it hard to spot, but as you learn more history, it becomes unmistakably clear.

I think not addressing the way that Chappelle showed trans people, is a bit of a misstep here. Even as a teenager during the early 2000s, I felt pretty uncomfortable about how the show mocked trans people. Chappelle's recent transphobic statements/"jokes", only make this criticism more important.

seems like Chappelle and Brennan had that same dynamic for the Chappelle Show that Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor had when writing movies like Blazing Saddles.
Maybe the real joke about the show as it was with Blazing Saddles was trying to catch everyone in the middle of a good laugh at someone else's expense off guard and at least a little uncomfortable even for a just a moment. I could really see Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor having a good laugh at making people who laugh at racist jokes uncomfortable.
I still think Chappelle does this, maybe more than he should, with his stand up to this day.

The Clayton Bigsby sketch was one of my two favorite sketches. The other one was the PopCopy sketch. I was working at Staples running one of their copy centers at the time the sketch came out and it hit home really hard. I just felt that sketch in a very personal way.
I also have to say I completely disagree with the statement that the show, or another one like it, shouldn't be produced today. Shows and comedy like Chappelle's Show that make people uncomfortable and push every ugly thing to the most extreme version of itself show us how ridiculous and meaningless those things are. Shows like his get people talking about things they would never normally talk about. That alone makes the show worth it.

Neil Brennan actually speaks about this often. Or he's asked. And he says it absolutely could be made today. But just because it could be, doesn't mean it should. And he explains that people are much more dumb today. And some people would be laughing at the wrong things for the wrong reasons.

I think Dave Chappelle gave a pretty good explanation for the sketch about the white family whose last name is the N word in his setup, when he said it's essentially him taking what white people who think they're allowed to use that word say, that it's "fine if you don't use it in a racist way" and putting that to the test to see if it feels normal and not racist in the most innocuous possible context, and the comedy comes from the fact that of course this doesn't work, the N word is completely inseparable from its racial history. And yeah, it has the same problem as the Clayton Bigsby episode in that this is a great, really funny and thoughtful premise, but also a lot of people are just going to laugh because they think it's funny to hear the N word a bunch from white people who look like the Leave if to Beaver family.

Anyway - I think that part you mention with society not really knowing how to handle multi-racial people (put into what box? hey, he is black/white enough so he is one of us/not one of us!) also comes into effect with sexuality and race. Like - if a black gay man produces something... which group owns that? I see some black people online that claim black gay men things are there's, but as a white gay guy, I don't find that too agreeable (especially when I seem to hear that from a subgroup of black people that are more likely to be homophobic, statistically speaking).
