The Flying V is such an incredible and distinctive guitar, I immediately think of Mr. Albert King wielding one of those while smoking a pipe and belting out Blues Power or Born Under a Bad Sign. Simply iconic!
Since there is only 20 comments on this video, I'll comment so you might see it. I want to thank you for all you've taught me. I started guitar in 2016 and gave up after a couple months. Not so long ago, I was listening to music (it was either American Idiot or Smells Like Teen Spirit), and I picked up my guitar for the first time in years to learn it. After struggling to figure it out on my own, I went on UA-cam to find a tutorial and I found your channel. Ever since then, I've been watching your videos all the time. I've started getting better at guitar at an incredibly fast rate and now I've started reading tabs. It's all thanks to you that I have discovered a talent. I'm hoping to start a band as an adult and bring back GOOD music. I went to the Hella mega tour in Houston and that gave me more motivation to become one of the best. Again, thank you so much.
I haven't started a band yet, but my high school band director recommended I join the jazz band. I'm about to be a freshman and I play trumpet. I'm a little nervous because I have a really cheap stratocaster rip off and since I'm teaching myself, I don't know very many chords. I practice for at least 3 hours every day after marching camp.
@@chrishardin7685 Dude, Squiers are quite good actually! Especially with the right eq settings on an amp it then just comes down to the unique tone of your fingers! Be sure to finger exercise every day especially since Jazz chords are going to be difficult at first but take it as slow as you need. Focus on playing clean before going for speed, the muscle memory will build up and help later on! The good news is that it’s easier than playing an metal stringed acoustic! 👍🏻 So keep up with the practice and try avoiding playing songs completely out of your realm. For me learning power chords, basic chords and then practicing the chord changes, minor pentatonic scales such as Aminor was a great start for me! What is your favorite band?! ☯️
@@gregorywilson3318 Thanks! I don't really know how to learn guitar because I've been teaching myself and my parents aren't willing to get me lessons. It's my fault, because the first time I was in lessons I quit and wasted my parent's money. Any little piece of advice helps. Thanks! Also, my two favorite bands are Black Sabbath and Nirvana.
@@chrishardin7685 Freaking love Black Sabbath!!! The first song I learned to play all the way through was Electric Funeral and I highly recommend that you do a youtube search “How to play electric funeral by Black Sabbath on guitar.” It is not difficult and with practice you will get the rhythm down and all! ☯️
I usually don’t enter giveaways nowadays, but hey it’d be pretty cool to own a decent guitar! I got myself a Squier Tele recently and the screws on the saddle stripped out.
this may get overlooked, but marty you've helped me learn a lot I didn't think i could. guitar has been a massive coping mechanism for me and it helps me with a lot of the things i struggle with. it's nice to just play what I'm feeling, and your lessons and videos help me put it into some sort of sense of a song. i was scared of not being able to play because i have a tendancy to give up on things, but when i first learned "The Kids Aren't Alright" from your tutorials, it made me wanna keep trying and I've gotten so much better. ive had an acoustic guitar since I was about 9, but i never bothered to pick it up. a few months ago i started playing it again and got an electric guitar for my birthday. ive been so happy to finally do something im actually passionate about. thank you marty.
Just bought my first guitar last Friday a epiphone sg standard, never played the guitar before so I'm a total beginner just found your channel on utube and have subscribed 😀👍 so thank you for your time and effort in teaching ppl like me . Your a Star 🌟 fella 👍
I bought a new Gibson Flying V at Guitar Center back in 1984 or so. I still have it. All original with Dirty Fingers PU's. It was built to be a rock n roll animal....and it is.
I personally own a flying V (mahogany) since 11 years, the quantity of tones and genres you can play without sounding and looking awful is insane, you can blues, you can rock, and you can even play the heavyest metal without feeling in the wrong spot or having a messy sound, mine is older and probably different from the one you'll win but man, this guitar is amazing, finally some love for one of the most underrated guitars out there!
Tone wood isn’t real pickups make very little difference apart from humbuckers compared to single coils and the shape doesn’t matter either… what your experiencing is a placebo or you started with a single coil guitar… literally everything you list in the tone bit is what a humbucker sounds like, cheap Chinese or 300 dollar Seymour Duncan the tone stays the same maybe ones a little louder but tone wise no.
I love when you teach us some historical tips about music, songs or guitars. You are the real MVP. Thanks Marty. Dont stop your good work ! I've learned few songs from you yet. Started playing guitar seriously last spring. I love your videos !
Man, I really do hope I win this. I just started my first band, and Randy Rhodes has got to be my greatest influence. Thanks so much for sharing this opportunity with us.
I bought a V six months ago because it felt better in my hands than the SG or a Paul. The tone is incredibly rich. Put it into a Marshall and it's like Chocolate and Peanut Butter.
Thanks man. You’ve taught me a lot and I’m really glad one day I looked up a vid by you and then saw the hours and hours of commitment you put into your channel. I started eating up the content and I still am. Thanks man
I have wanted a Gibson of some sort for such a long time, I love Albert King as well, but Gibson prices tend to get very high. Thank you for this opportunity!
Only get it for the look and feel, not the tone. Every humbucking electric guitar sounds the same when you test the guitar and nothing else you hear no sonic difference between one and another…
Had a great 1970s Flying V, got rid of it when I bought my Gary Moore Les Paul. Didn't think I needed the 2 similar guitars. But the Flying V was much better to me in retrospect. I need to get another Flying V soon.
Apparently, Hendrix has played SG's Jaguars, and Les Paul's as well as Flying V's. The only other guitar I've seen him with is the Flying V though. Love it's TOAN!!! 😎🎸🎸
I have the bonamassa Amos Flying V…made by epiphone…it is truly after I set it up….beautiful…it has a distinct tone..compared to my Les Paul…the Korina Wood…probably a big part…had a V back in 70’s yeah I’m old..but love the V….👍👍
Forget the look. A flying V has a singing mid-range tone that is only comparable to the Gibson SG. It actually has a different voice and balance because of the shape and the neck for some reason. It's absolutely a unique sounding guitar that you can't experience until you play one and note the differences.
Man ik I’m too late but that’s my litteral dream guitar. They sound so nice and it’s such a cool design. But tbh I’ll just save 2k to order it on guitar center. Thanks for the playing
I like a Samuel L Jackson movie, especially with a good soundtrack❣️ I bought a soundtrack from an earlier movie with Samuel L Jackson, with Neneh Cherry singing a take on a James Brown song. "You gotta be fortunate. You gotta be lucky now." 😊

Coincidentally, I just watched this movie the other night. It was pretty good! Having been shopping for a Gibson Flying V for a couple of months now, the scene where Maggie Q's character gifts the Flying V to Samuel L. Jackson's character really drew my attention. But as is the case with a lot of movies....there's a problem. The Flying V in the movie is supposedly a 1958 korina Gibson Flying V. Clearly, it is not a korina 1958 styled Flying V. It is more similar to a 1967 styled Flying V. Obvious is the triangular-shaped knob pattern, the large truss rod cover, the lack of the the distinctive shoulders and V-shaped, strings thru the body tailpiece design of the '58 style. You can also tell that it is not korina and is probably mahogany. The movie doesn't mention the value of an authentic 1958 Gibson korina Flying V of which only 81 were made that's about $500,000. A pretty pricey gift! Also it was alluded to that it was the 1958 Flying V that was actually played by Albert King himself...add a premium to that dollar amount! I'm just sayin...
Man this guitar looks amazing! I'm kinda a beginner but my brother began teaching me when I was 7 years old. (16 now). I've gotten hand-me-down guitars and this thing is definitely special! I hope I can play some dope jams

Well this competition is for 18+ who live in the US only so that’s depressing. Oh well, good luck to everyone who enters!

Dave Mustaine is the first guitarist that comes to mind when I think of flying V surprised that nobody mentions him.
I think he played Jackson V
This man Marty and a Gibson guitar is the reason I’m really gonna go see a movie, Marty you’re awesome

Until you realise that guitars pretty much sound the same, apart from single coils to humbuckers there’s no real tonal difference with guitars…
