OMG this is the first time I have ever seen anyone talk about the ribs in a golf swing, but I kind of liked the idea so much I just went and tried it on the range and I found that it made an amazing difference, my ball striking was so much straighter and consistent from wedge to 5 iron. Thanks so much Russ.

I have this very same problem, an overactive lower body as I initiate my downswing causing early extension and a forward slide. My new swing thought is to use my core to initiate my backswing and control the downswing. Important to this new "move" is that the core is bringing on the speed/power on the downswing gradually. No need to rush the downswing, because you're controlling your swing/tempo with your core. I've been hitting the ball very well. Russell has done a great job identifying this solution. Thanks!

Great work as always. Top tips. But its all about doing the drills. I understand that watching ur excellent videos will never be enough on their own. Cheers. Keep them coming.

Concentrating on the lower ribs / core means I feel the desired movement so much more than thinking about hips or shoulders.
It's also the feeling I get when doing the stepping in drill. 👍

Excellent analysis of Lynn's swing for our benefit Russell! Today, I was trying the "tilt and turn" method, but occasionally with both irons and fairway woods on the downswing my right shoulder was the culprit causing pulled shots. Rather than keeping the right shoulder down and back, it was flying forward with the elbow leaving my side. Something your video was covering!

Funny that you mention Mike Bender. You and Mike are the only two golf instruction influencers I follow. I watch lots of golf content (TXG for fitting and equipment, lifestyle / travel, etc.) but for instruction I don't want to fill my head with too much and have found you two to be the best for me. Thank you!

Great lesson thanks Russ. I can see how I was moving towards the ball and getting stuck. Pushing off the right foot to send the left ribs up as my left hip moves back and round is a good feel for me. That should speed things up 👍.

Don't tell the other UA-cam golfers, your instruction is by far the best!

Hi Russell, been struggling for consistency recently and your tips using the wall and keeping pressure on my glutes/ cheeks to prevent me moving towards the ball, well. Played 36 holes over 2 days this week, did not lose 1 ball, and never went into 1 bunker. That is a first for me. 17 h/c. Straight off tee, straighter approach shots more solid contact all round. Didn’t change anything else, grip, stance, alignment, etc. just focused on staying over the ball through the swing. Can’t say enough about these tips. Cheers

Very understandable and an excellent video for the correct hip moves- Hip moves underlay good pivoting that in turn generate good ball striking. Well done.

Great video Russell! I’m quite a new golfer less (than a year) I’m trying to get to grips with pulling the front hip back in the downswing, it just feels odd right now! But in all fairness it only clicked the other week about pulling my rear hip back in the backswing, I was always pushing it round with the front side of my body. I have a golf net in the garden so I’m just trying to practice as much as I can and I’m hoping to try the rib cage feel so this movement feels more natural! I’ll keep watching your videos too as they make a lot of sense to me, I’ve culled quite a few UA-cam golfers recently as I was watching too many telling me different things 😆

Excellent video. Russel could you comment on the trail hip being pushed out as a result of pushing up excessively and too early with the trail foot.

For me as I listened to the video again I noticed there is a direct correlation between the right side bend and the lead hip moving back onto the touche line. The two moves, lead hip going back and right side crunch move in tandem. If I just focus on the right side crunch as a first move down from top of backswing, I notice the lead hip will automatically fall back towards the touche line and vice versa. Hope this helps some of you out there. By the way focusing on the right side crunch also facilitates/moves/rotates the chest forward as recommended in the video.

It seems that using the chest to move the club in every aspect of the game, other than the putter, is the key to good play. Obviously, all parts of the body are required to swing the club, but the connection between the club & body is determined by the chest, which is why I have an issue with the advice of the shoulder turn & keeping your back to the target. The shoulders can be turned without any other body rotation, but the chest turn makes that impossible. I relate more to turning my chest away from the target rather than my back to the target because I can see the position of my chest & don't have to rely on the feeling of the position of the back during the backswing. As we're told, feel isn't always real.

Hmmm... seems like, in general, the the backswing is driven by the upper body and the downswing by the lower body - although not exclusively. If that's correct, then what happens just before, during, and just after transition would seem to be a major "feel" challenge
