What a controversial and clickbaity title right? I did this JUST to make Dustin cringe. You come on my channel, you get what you get. You’re welcome :) please berate us in the comments about the ones we should have done. I want to hear the real stuff!
I think Michael would be a lot better musician if he didn't use so many multisyllabic words. But, i prefer the banjo so ... I'm lucky if i remember to wipe the tobacco juice off my mouth 🪕
This guy is rarely mentioned in any “best”, “top”, “greatest” drummers lists and conversations. I’ve never heard any other drummer play like AVH. He doesn’t play with the song, he plays inside the song like most musicians probably couldn’t do without being so closely connected and in sync with the composer.
Good to see Alex getting some exposure for his awesome drumming! I play guitar and drums, and loved both brothers playing. Van Halen was the real deal!
If you wanted a song that really showed Alex’s swagger, it is “Finish What Ya Started” on OU812. Simple, but big sound. One thing that never gets pointed out - Alex is always - always - part of Eddie’s opening solos. Most people don’t listen for the drum, but they are always glued together.
The heart of that band might have been Eddie and Alex. But the soul was Micheal Anthony. They all were perfectly matched for each other, whether it was with Roth or Sammy. Long live the mighty Van Halen.
I saw VH live at CoboHall Detroit in 1982. Dave was a showman, and did a shitty job at drunken singing that night, but kicked higher than any Cirque Du Soleil acrobat and wowed everyone. The reason he got away with terrible vocals is because Alex and Eddie rocked so hard and so tight that even DLR was secondary to how amazing these two brothers could play against one another. Best show I ever saw-even to this day.
I know that VH 3 isn’t viewed as a good album by VH standards, but Alex’s drumming is unreal! His timing drives me nuts! It’s as though he wanted to show that he can play technically as well as his swing playing. People who are closed minded freak out when I say that he took what Bonham, Baker and Moon did and advanced with it. All great players, but for me, Al is on another level. He can play anything with his own swing and groove. Neil, of course, is the grandfather of technical rock playing. But, he jams so many notes in every song. You can’t tap your toes!! He’s brilliant and soo creative, but I don’t get goosebumps from Rush. I love Rush, I just can’t sing along! Who hasn’t sang Panama full blast!! Alex, always plays what’s right for the song and he isn’t afraid to simplify! Best if Both Worlds is a great song that isn’t difficult to play. Anyway, there is no greatest drummer. There are so many!! But, Al plays anything and everything at any time and is STILL underrated.
The Hot for Teacher intro isn't a bike or car engine and certainly not a Lambo. That story gets conflated with the fact that Ed's Lamborghini Miura (a wedding gift from Valerie Bertinelli) was used in the breakdown in Panama. You can clearly hear it in that song, and they are very different sounds. I could get into the weeds about why a high rev-ing V12 like the Lamborghini and a big lumpy cammed American V8 or a Harley sound completely different, but I'll spare you the pain. What you are hearing are Simmons electronic drum pads, with cheesy unrealistic 80s drum sounds. He used them essentially replacing the toms and bass drums, with the bass drums having a slightly deeper preset tone. Interestingly he decided to keep the his regular snare (Tama Rosewood at this point, I believe) and cymbals, and through in a few roto toms as well. So you are hearing a mix of electronic and acoustic drums and real cymbals. Very experimental, like his brother. But what isn't talked about enough is that what he is playing, which is in my belief an ode to the intro to "Sing, Sing, Sing" by Benny Goodman, played by the legendary Gene Krupa, but updated for the 80s. The VH bros grew up with their clarinet playing Jazz loving father Jan, playing with him jazz standards from a very early age, so when Eddie came up with the main riff to Hot for Teacher, which resembles the main horn part to "Sing, Sing, Sing" Alex probably knew right away. Alex swings for the fences (pun intended) on that song, and you really can hear it on him going berserk on the ride cymbal, playing up his jazz chops.
The very beginning of the song sounds like an idling cammy car to me (who knows what type) and then Alex comes in at 6 sec duplicating the sound. It's pretty clear to me the change in tone and rhythm. Just like they claimed.
@@theboofin You are hearing the double bass enter there. But even before that I also forgot to mention you can actually hear him accidentally click his sticks at the very beginning.
@@acarlovonsexron1994 Yeah, that’s what I said…. Sounds like an engine and then Alex enters. Ted Templeman the producer agrees with me, so Im not sure what your source is. Stick clicks doesn’t change anything, you can add them anywhere.
@@theboofin My ears, and the thing between the two of them that knows what vintage Simmons drum machines sound like, how rudiments sound and are played, and what the firing order on various internal combustion engines are and how that sounds rhythmically coming out an exhaust. Ted can say whatever he wants, but between the drug consumption at the time clouding memories and the known "different kind of truths" if you will that he and his compatriots have been known to participate in (Brown M&M's anyone?) to add some "decoration" to their stories, I'll take that with 40 years' worth of salt. Now, could part of Alex's inspiration come from riding a bike? Absolutely. But that isn't what you are actually hearing on the record, and that is to Alex's credit. Personally, I'd like to see someone try to close mic a Harley pipe without blowing the diaphragm out.
I've never clicked on a video so fast. Thank you for this. AVH has been my fav drummer my whole life. I'm a 54 year old drummer, started playing at 8 yrs old, grew up in Arcadia (next to Pasadena) a couple of blocks away from Michael Anthony. Literally Van Halen Country. Do the math. Mega fan. Like so many others have stated, Al does not get enough love. I won't get into it. But I will say this...this video is not nearly long enough. You most def need to do a follow up...or 5. Lol. Not like you two would be going out of your way to sit there and geek out on VH for a couple of hours. Plus there really aren't any videos breaking Al's stuff down. Like none. Not real in depth ones. Some parts here and there, but not catalog-wise. And he's got some important stuff going on that people need to realize. He's sooo damn good and people just don't get it. Like Outta Love. Been playing along to that and trying to figure it all out (like every single beat and nuance) since I was a kid. Who ever sheds any light on this? No one, that's who. I mean, it's a freaking master class in and of itself. There are so many others. Anyways, thank you thank you for this. Keep on rockin. \w/
That was fun, guys! Thanks for this. Please, do some more videos in this format. First heard them in 78 on an 8-Track and hooked since. Van Halen is like my comfort music, and I never get tired of it. I fall asleep every night while listening to their music and its intracity; this helps to keep my brain busy:)
The Mighty Van Halen will always be with us , if you like rock , and like your music loud no other band rocks like The Mighty Van Halen I’ve seen them play this song live it’s ridiculous guitar , and drums are just in sync inside the song ridiculous AVH &EVH 🤘🤘🤘👍❤️❤️👍
Loved this video, thank you guys! I’ve always been struck by the cymbal pause in Outta Love Again and so rarely come across another person with this same thought - loved that moment here. Another and maybe one of the best one-two punches I always go back to for EVH/AVH interplay is the two closing tracks on 1984 - Girl Gone Bad + House of Pain. So many good moments in those. Some of the best examples of the brothers playing off each other. So good. Cheers!
“Angular” is how I describe the brothers’ work, too. Everything, even the most “composed” song, sounded improvised as if in a jazz club. That translates into a high stakes, live without a net, type of experience in the arena where the audience is holding their breath to see what would happen next.
I’m getting tears watch that live tune, but even the bros made some beautiful music, even tho it’s about Alex, I’d have to say Mike is the voice of VH…….
Alex is by far the most underrated rock drummer. My favorite version of 5150 is the one from Japan show. Ed's harmonics are insane at beginning of chorus. Mine All Mine from that show too.
I've said for a long time something like, one of the biggest secrets to Eddie Van Halen is Alex Van Halen. Eddie never sounds quite the same playing against another drummer. So much is missing having Eddie without Alex, it's like he's just riffing out of place much of the time. A good evidence for me is Respect the Wind. I didn't know anything about Van Halen being on the soundtrack for Twister when I saw the movie for the first time years ago. I of course quickly recognized Humans Being as being Van Halen, but the fact that I picked up on Respect the Wind at the end during the credits (yea I liked to watch all of the credits after a movie, drove the family crazy, and the theater crew... hah). I heard it and thought, that's Eddie and Alex, I'm sure of it.
Eddie Van Halen used the exhaust from the Lamborghini at the intro of that song. That with the electric poly-Simmons rack gives that insane intro the iconic sound!
This could be a separate show/channel for you, Michael - Garage Rock Reacts? Fun ride. Invited a guest, crank some tunes, have free beer to keep the neighbors happy.
1:44 I've always assumed it was Alex mimicking a big-block drag car idling (it is easy to find examples on YT)... Certainly not a Lambo. (I think Panama has Edward's Lambo recorded during the B section?) ... I've never heard that the drum intro had a recorded car but maybe so.
e.g. on YT, search for "PURE SOUND of Built BIG BLOCK CAMARO" ... it is much newer than the 1984 album but the idle sound (with no revs) gives a good example of the rolling, spitfire cadence
DUDE!!!!!!!! 5150 From LWOAN is the band in top form!!!! If I don't feel like getting put of bed after a long night, this is my go to video!!!! A fucking masterpiece of live rock n roll!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
MP said “angular” - that is such an astute observation - maybe just because I am a Math guy, but I think angular describes them perfectly…even EVH’s famous design😌
Hagars first tour was my first concert at 13…ft Myers. I literally couldn’t hear anything but Edward’s pick impacting the strings by half way through his solo, and I can’t even remember the end because it was deafening. I walked out into the summer air after and everyone kept saying “what?”. That’s when I realized I also had lost my voice completely from screaming the lyrics. It was glorious. BTO was decent too lol.
LOL!!!!! .... and so do the neighbors, LMAO!!!!!!! Right?!!! Van Halen was made for epic house stereos and good old Pioneer or Alpine car speakers with a graphic equalizer to give it that extra punch!! Love the shorts by the way!! In honor of our beloved Eddie's Frankenstein!!! RIP!!
Man that was awesome!!! Have you ever thought about doing a Michael Anthony Appreciation episode? That guy was so crucial to VH, and I heard tons of people say he was an “ok” bass player. His harmonies were unreal, and had to play bass parts written by Ed! And he never talked shit. Just smiled and killed.
the first 5 min of this educates us more thoroughly than anything i've seen currently online of just what makes the van halen brothers so special and absolute musical geniuses. And when you guys get to Out of Love.. Look, no one was doing this kinda stuff in the 80s folks. It's what drew so many of us to van halen as kids.. You both break down the groove and the musical wrestling perfectly. Such a great fuckin video. Thanks!
1990'ish. We WKNC DJ's had set up a remote location to welcome the freshmen. Kid walks up, "This sounds like Van Halen but that ... that doesn't sound like Sammy Hagar...?" I don't remember what we said but I doubt we were able to say anything.
I love Alex’s swing, very under appreciated. That said, Eddie stated in an interview with Guitar Player ( think it was 30th anniversary of 1984) that 5150 was built in the dimensions of a racquetball court (to hide it’s nature from zoning inspector) and there wasn’t room for Kit and cymbals. The cymbals had to be overdubs as a result. So, he sort of outed HFT intro overdubbing unintentionally. Plus, you never hear Alex play that intro, arguably his signature moment, live. Not to slam a great player, it just is what it is.
Well there's definitely sequel potential here. Checkout "Girl Gone Bad Live at the US fest.". If that doesn't showcase the brother's "dueling", I don't k ow what does.
alex used Simmons electronic drums and Rototoms to record 1984. the intro is entirely him playing hertas and double bass and such to recreate the sound of a harley motorcycle. there are stupid stories of him using 4 bass drums or something to record it but that is clearly referencing his live setup. the mixup with the car sound is actually eddie’s car during the breakdown of panama. not sure how all of these rumors started
as for the super quick fill at the end, his tom sound was programmed to sound very similar to the bass drum, so it sounds like he is ripping the bass drums, but actually splitting it up between hands and feet
AVH iso tracks on real monitors???!!??!!!!?? Instasub!! I'm not a drummer, not ever even CLOSE, but Al's the GOAT in my not so humble opinion. Thanks for highlighting his insanity - it's gotta be the genes - in such a great setting! More, please!
Loved your choices, but my favorite AVH studio track will always be Tora!Tora!/Loss Of Control. LOC is sort of like speed metal before it was really a genre. Also, for live video footage, Somebody Get Me A Doctor from the US Festival in 1983 where Ed and Al did a guitar/drum duel/jam in the middle where they did parts of the then unreleased Girl Gone Bad as well as I'm So Glad by Cream. You just do a two hour video on Alex's best parts 😂
Yeah I’ve never heard that hot for teacher had a car in the audio. I heard Panama did. And I always hear different people talking about how Alex did it. is it some sort of mix track. We’ve all heard him do it live and seen him do it live
HOLY PHUCKIN SHYT, I DON'T BELIEVE THIS!!! I FINALLY found some COOL-ASS BROTHER'S who hear The MIGHTY VAN HALEN AS well as my #1 Rock drumming God Mr. Alex Van Halen the EXACT way that I have since 1979!!! EXCELLENT JOB GENTLEMEN! NOTES: You can find the story about the intro to Hot For Teacher in the autobiography on Ted Templeman...yes it IS a car at the very beginning. - The wave you are referring to is the INFAMOUS Van Halen "groove machine" in FULL EFFECT! I KNOW they are technically a "rock band" but don't NO rock band groove AND swing like Van Halen! THAT'S one of the Top 5 reasons that they have been and will always be my #1 rock band! - Please tell me you guys are already hip to the infamous harmony that takes place on the track "Sinner's Swing" that takes place at the 0:37 mark from Fair Warning? It's CLASSIC VH harmony and it's DLR anchoring the low note beneath Eddie and Michael. PLEASE CHECK IT OUT AND GET BACK TO ME!
Eddie had a 67 Lamborghini Miura that was used on Panama. Maybe that's the car you're thinking of haha and great video man! I'm always here for a Van Halen deep dive
So it took me a couple days.. I have more etc. But first, DOA Van Halen 2 the outro. Worthy of mention. The brother on brother. Double time til the fade out. It could have been another song… those last two guitar skanks.
Michael- You guys need to check out the US FESTIVAL from 1983. Somebody get me a doctor. The MEDLEY in between. Drums and Guitar FIGHT...I think its way better than the 5150 piece you guys spoke on. Also its from 86, not 91. There is a great US Festival version that is clear on UA-cam. Please, you guys do a VIDEO on that. I would love to see your reactions!
Hello I've watching your reaction and i enjoy your insights. PLEASE REACT TO (BURNA BOY GRAMY PERFORMANCE) an amazing live performance you'll appreciate an amazing music

He plays “inside” the song. Alex and Ed together were a nuclear power plant.
We listen to Van Halen......so do the neighbors!! Awesome!
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice!!!!!!
Alex's drumming on the Balance album is the pinnacle of his career. Amsterdam, Seventh Seal, Aftershock,Deja Vu, Feeling, etc..
Annnnnnnnnd the doin time solo
💯 🙌

YES!!!!!!!
"Outta Love Again" is my all time favorite Van Halen tune because of Al's drumming
5150 was released in 1986 as well as that concert footage was from that tour. Thank you for all the music Van Halen,
Thanks for including “Outta Love”, my favorite Alex groove ever!
The heart of that band might have been Eddie and Alex. But the soul was Micheal Anthony. They all were perfectly matched for each other, whether it was with Roth or Sammy. Long live the mighty Van Halen.
Awesome!! Thanks for an Alex video. Very under appreciated drummer.
OK… I’m off to crank up Right Here, Right Now Live - and not get any work done! 🤘🏻

100% agree, that is epic!
Many make people air guitar but who don't air drum to Alex and bonzo
alex used Simmons electronic drums and Rototoms to record 1984. the intro is entirely him playing hertas and double bass and such to recreate the sound of a harley motorcycle. there are stupid stories of him using 4 bass drums or something to record it but that is clearly referencing his live setup. the mixup with the car sound is actually eddie’s car during the breakdown of panama. not sure how all of these rumors started
as for the super quick fill at the end, his tom sound was programmed to sound very similar to the bass drum, so it sounds like he is ripping the bass drums, but actually splitting it up between hands and feet
Cool deal with your buddy
You should do more of this
Excellent video! Where did he find the energy? "C*caine is a hell of a drug" - Rick James
Amerstdam has some sick drumming on it
Feel like I’m in the garage with you!
This super rocks. Another thing that rocks is Playing God's by Polyphia. go get it Michael
3:20 Hot For Teacher, Panama and Girl Gone Bad are live single guitar takes --
Loved your choices, but my favorite AVH studio track will always be Tora!Tora!/Loss Of Control.
5150 live without a net was 1986
Loved the video. FYI the footage was from 1986 not 1991
HOLY PHUCKIN SHYT, I DON'T BELIEVE THIS!!!
My mistake, the EXACT point of the note that I was referring to happens at 0:46!
I now own these shorts
Girl gone bad groove as well as I’m the one, u could also argue for dirty movies for a pure groove slam down
Michael- You guys need to check out the US FESTIVAL from 1983.
10:43 1986
The beginning of it was done with two drummers because one drummer could make the sound and I believe that came from Alex Van Halen‘s mouth
Super Bock! Greatest beer ever. Go out and tell homeschoolers to quit rolling rock 😉
The intro is an Italian engine.
5150 is Live WithOut a Net 1986 ish
It was Ed’s Lamborghini for the first like 3 seconds
Annie Kelley!! Lol
Hang 'em High, 2:46.
