Van Halen Black N Blue : A very underrated Van Halen tune , IMO. I remember first hearing this driving around delivering pizzas , in high school , back in 1988. It's awesome finding these videos after all these years and the reactions that make you appreciate VH more! Eddies tone was the bomb, even just the ringing out on the amps at 14:21 end of the solo. And dont forget they always were having fun playing live. Thanks for sharing! Your love of their music is priceless.

One of my favorites! Love that song brewing guitar work brilliant songwriting all around awesome! Anything that they wrote original on that diver down album is awesome and they get a lot of crap cuz all the covers but I get it
They talk to each other through their gifts. They play it with their Q’s to each other. It is remarkably powerful. Eddie live is unfair. People always claimed Eddie was using recorded rhythm to complete songs they had previously recorded. EVH is The Good Lord living with Edward through God’s Sovereign power, and Eddie’s creative talents in obedience to bring the best sounds, through tones ever done on a guitar. This teacher brings the amazement to a musical picture of what is going on here as the written music is played. Eddie was a genius. I miss him a lot. I saw Joe a month ago try so hard to bring Eddie’s sound ( tones) to life. It is not possible. It was a great show. But I miss Edward.
AFU on this concert is beyond amazing as well, actually the whole DVD is stunning. Eddie just existed in another universe. Love your passion for this fella.
Van Halen is amazing, we’re still learning just how amazing. Watching Michael listen in awe and appreciate while at the same time showing just how extraordinary he is, too. Great video.
Heard him live 5 times in all different eras. You will never find a video on you tube, or a stereo, that can ever come close to what that SOB sounded like live straight from the amps. He will always be the goat.

He is the King of swing! The game changer! The most inspired!! Eddie Van Halen !! I love your playing and video reaction Unbelievable!! Thank You!!!Congrasts 👏👏❤
Your enthusiasm for this track made me smile. Reminded me of driving around with my friends in high school, in a ford escort GT, while we blasted Van Halen. I was a hendrix/SRV/Clapton guy at the time, but I could hear the cream influence in Eddie's playing. I really got into VH after hearing "little dreamer" And "I'm the one". The first VH album I bought was VH2, because I couldn't get the guitar tone of Beautiful Girls and Somebody get me a doctor out of my head.
I was watching a concert video the day of EVH's passing and I was struck by how full the guitar sounded. Like you said, there's only the three of them playing and yet it sounds as full as though there were two other backup guitarists playing along. EVH and SRV both had that ability to sound so big and so full. They both played so many bass notes with their thumbs over the top of the neck in addition to whatever they were playing on the higher strings. Like they had all five fingers of their left hand engaged to create the fullest sound possible. Such remarkable playing and such a loss.
Eddies riffs are the best thing about his playing! I’m a Mach 1 DLR huge fan, but OU812, FUCK and Balance have some of Eddie’s most interesting work. Super loose, more open, but the tight riffs are where they need to be! Thank you
They sound unbelievable here. As great as the instruments sound the vocals are even more incredible. Sad I didn't get to see this lineup live together, though technically have seen them all in some iterations.
I agree, but all that transitioning fill-in is why he was beyond his time. You have to listen very closely to hear sometimes. Because he was a little computer figuring out the excess noise being in the gaps and still be melodic, and yet his timing was without reading a note of music. Phenom is not the only word. Savantism comes to mind. lol
Finally someone who really gets into the meat of guitar playing with such a passion. This is my first time watching and I totally agree with your song choice. I am now following you and look forward to watching more videos. Thank You
So sad about Eddie. I wish they would have treated Michael better. This just shows how much he really contributed to their sound. His bass playing and high harmonies are a cornerstone to their sound.
Michael Anthony is the absolute best fit for this band.. Those who criticize him just don't get it.. Michal Anthony knew the VH brothers had internal family dynamic issues and he overlooked and side stepped that for the sake of the music and the fans.. He is a class act through and through..
Without a doubt, and the only time I ever heard anyone from the original lineup compliment his voice was an interview with Roth. As cocky as Roth was and is. It was great to hear him say that about Mike's voice in the mix.
You reacting to this song(one of my very favorite songs) just warmed my heart...It's wonderful to hear someone talk with such admiration for one of my hero's as well...Thank You!
Well done. Perfect analysis of his solo. He was so dialed in on this album. They recorded and mixed each track to completion before moving on to the next, which resulted in an album of unique songs, yet they still go together.
Just watched this first time today. EVH was absolutely the greatest. I don't play guitar, or understand anything you're talking about while teaching, but your passion is amazing and I could watch you all day! Thanks for what you're doing.
This guy looks like how i feel just diving down the road listening to Van Halen ! I like a lot of bands and a lot of guitarists, but no one ever made me feel the way this band did! Its like you could feel it,i dont know how to explain it.
That because Micheal is Passionate about great music & great artists! Michael covered my favourite artist of all time, Amy Winehouse, on one of his video's & I play it everyday now!! It's great meeting, listening & learning from such an enthusiast, one who knows what he is talking about! Thanks MP
I went to FOUR VH concerts & many times it was like listening to the CD version of the songs This was a great breakdown. Really enjoy ur enthusiasm for the MIGHTY VAN HALEN
Excellent vid man. I felt the same way when Ed died. This was always one of my all time fav VH tunes. His tone is killer here. It just sounds so powerful from top to bottom.
Couldn’t agree more with your selection of this song. This was the first tune I played on Tuesday night after I heard the news that EVH had passed. Thanks for making this video.
Dude right on!!! I used to blare this one in my 1985 Chevy s-10. Kenwood deck with alpine eq boxed Panasonic 6x9’s. Mullet blowing in the breeze from the windows rolled down and a fresh pack of Marlboro lights on the bench seat. Wow this really took me back. Lifetime member btw. Love your teaching.
Just discovered this video. Really enjoyed it. Man, I’ve loved everything about that tune since it came out, except the lyrics. I don’t know but maybe that’s why it didn’t get played much on the radio back in tbd 80s. But everything you said about Eddie, his playing, his influence, it’s on point. Exactly right. I’m really hoping a lot of his home recordings get released someday. Maybe we haven’t heard the last of “new” VH music yet. ✊
I don’t play a guitar, but I really enjoyed watching you breakdown EVH the GOAT playing. It would be great if you could breakdown more VH songs. Again, thanks this was very COOL!
Great vid, Michael! While watching, all i could think about was how much fun they looked like they were having, then you started talking about the joy. For me, that is what makes live performances the best...I don't want to call out requests to the band, I want them to play whatever is bringing them the most joy at that moment, because that is when the magic happens! Thanks for another great reaction vid!
Hey Michael I took this hard Edward was like a distance light house for me.I have been playing for years and like you I have tried and failed however the gift the Eddie gave us is that WE developed our style from his gift. You at a distance have helped me with this more than you will ever know my man. Take your whiskey home is my jam brotha We rock on to what we have left Respectfully Chris
That short bit from 0:14 - 0:17 is one of the reasons I started playing again after 9 years. Jimi was why I picked it up the first time. Now it's Ed. Ed could make something as quick as a chord pack such brute force. Killer review of one of my all time fave performances, thanks!
I saw VH open for Sabbath way back when (78 or early 79). There hasn't been another rock band that came close to them with all the goods since, other than VH with Hagar.
The name THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN came from the announcer guy at their concerts early on when he would introduce them He'd say "you wanted the BEST - (pause) - but we couldn't afford them. So instead I give u - (pause) - THE MIGHTY - VANNNN HALEN!!!!!
I shared the same sentiment & tears with the passing of EVH . . . Michael, it was like losing a close friend . . . Certainly appreciate your tutorial tips on the EVH licks . . . Thank You . . . All the best & stay well !!!
What's the most satisfying is you showing EVH love and respect, not even really playing, but more in awe on what he's doing. Thank you for making my eyes leak again 👍. (Btw, I have the same exact Wolf!) For 19 years now.
5150/812 is when i got completely hooked. Not just Ed, but the entire package. Best live rock band ever. Will always be untouchable in my book. It was a blessing to witness it.
if Van Hagar would have dressed better, I think Sammy would have gotten a lot more acclaim as a front man. Guns n' Roses dressed better, everyone in Grunge dressed better, and Metallica dressed better. Van Halen kind of missed the boat on that until the video for Humans Beings
I’ve only just found your channel and this is what I love so far. Your constant smile whilst seeming exasperated trying to find the right adjectives to describe Ed’s playing. I feel the same and just smile and nod my head along with you. So good 🤘🏼😏👏🏼
Thank you! Stumbled upon your channel after he died and so glad I did! Subscribed and thankful for another person with the level of appreciation for this man and what he did.
Because of this man, when i was 12 i said, WHAT THE HELL IS MAKING THAT SOUND, and ive never had to work a day of my life, i taught for awhile and HATED it, worked at guitar center, thats IT. THE REST HAS BEEN PLAYING LIVE AND I LIVE WELL. THANK YOU MAESTRO!

I don't think it's that far of a stretch to say Mike is one of the best background vocalists of ALL time
Michael shouldn't of been with slammy when Eddie was ready to record therefore your fired!
Without a doubt, and the only time I ever heard anyone from the original lineup compliment his voice was an interview with Roth. As cocky as Roth was and is. It was great to hear him say that about Mike's voice in the mix.
So happy I got to see them that year. They were amazing.
You reacting to this song(one of my very favorite songs) just warmed my heart...It's wonderful to hear someone talk with such admiration for one of my hero's as well...Thank You!
Thank you for posting this Michael. I’m a Van Halen fan too and I’m still struggling with Eddie’s death. This is one of my faves from OU812.
“Pure joy and flow.” Loved that. I say keep the Van Halen videos coming. You do them great justice. Thanks again brother.
Love this song. Their harmonies are perfect. When love walks in sends chills up my spine.
Love your appreciation and enthusiasm for the Sammy years!! Their song writing was on another level!!
Well done. Perfect analysis of his solo. He was so dialed in on this album. They recorded and mixed each track to completion before moving on to the next, which resulted in an album of unique songs, yet they still go together.
Black n blue one of my favorites. Finish what you started and so many
Just watched this first time today.
Thanks MP
The perfect rock for all.perfect
I went to FOUR VH concerts & many times it was like listening to the CD version of the songs
This was a great breakdown. Really enjoy ur enthusiasm for the MIGHTY VAN HALEN
Probably the most articulate analysis of the genius of the mighty Van Halen I have ever heard.
Yes...I love the Black n Blue too, and OU812 is beautifuly colourful as rainbows...RIP Edward...RIP VH...
Well said. 👍
I’ve seen Edward live 19 times in my life since 83. I’m blessed and privileged for having so.
This is a hell of a tribute, Michael. Thanks.
I don’t play a guitar, but I really enjoyed watching you breakdown EVH the GOAT playing. It would be great if you could breakdown more VH songs. Again, thanks this was very COOL!
I love this song! I heard it live at the Monsters of Rock in 88!!
Take your whiskey home is my jam brotha
We rock on to what we have left
Respectfully Chris
EVH got me playing guitar when I was 8, indeed it's been a super hard week. Glad I was around and listening for the past 44 years
That short bit from 0:14 - 0:17 is one of the reasons I started playing again after 9 years.
Love to hear a proficient guitarist appreciate his genius. TY👍
Mike,
You absolutely rock and I can’t thank you enough for helping me cope with the loss of our idol.
We are with you !
And thank U Eddie !
Totally feel your emotion on this.....this track was brilliant.

The name THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN came from the announcer guy at their concerts early on when he would introduce them
He'd say "you wanted the BEST - (pause) - but we couldn't afford them. So instead I give u - (pause) - THE MIGHTY - VANNNN HALEN!!!!!
I needed this tonight, the 17th. Still hard.Cathartic for me, too. Thank you!
he was in my guitar god echelon: EVH, Gary Moore, Rory G. About all i listened to
EVH was a Holdsworth fan
Please include Steve Morse and Eric Johnson.
@@joemcgowen4153 true but the only guitarist he copped licks off of was Clapton......
I shared the same sentiment & tears with the passing of EVH . . . Michael, it was like losing a close friend . . . Certainly appreciate your tutorial tips on the EVH licks . . . Thank You . . . All the best & stay well !!!
SRV “Riviera Paradise” from his -last show-
His playing totally evolved after achieving sobriety and that performance makes grown men cry
What's the most satisfying is you showing EVH love and respect, not even really playing, but more in awe on what he's doing. Thank you for making my eyes leak again 👍.
(Btw, I have the same exact Wolf!) For 19 years now.
Say what you will but Sammy can deliver a live vocal performance.
@Jim Lahey I absolutely agree... dlr was nothing more than a karaoke singer.
5150/812 is when i got completely hooked. Not just Ed, but the entire package. Best live rock band ever. Will always be untouchable in my book. It was a blessing to witness it.
Exactly
while 50 feet up on scaffolding!
if Van Hagar would have dressed better, I think Sammy would have gotten a lot more acclaim as a front man. Guns n' Roses dressed better, everyone in Grunge dressed better, and Metallica dressed better. Van Halen kind of missed the boat on that until the video for Humans Beings
Had a Van Halen video from the same era growing up and was also in awe of how big he makes that guitar/bass/drum combo sound. Great video as always
This is a great song truly a very nuanced groove. The song Feelin of of Balance has a solo from outer space absolutely unbelievable.
Totally!
He makes you want to either pick up your guitar or quit. Such a f$cking legend RIP Eddie 🇨🇦🤘
The best of the best, his influence will be felt for ages.
I can feel your passion while you talking! Every move you make is so emotional so fantastic so into the music!! I really love watching you! Sorry for my bad language! I'm a 55 y. Old German Guitarero! 🤘
