Cool stuff. I think it's worth noting as well how most of the slick defensive geniuses (Floyd Mayweather, Muhammad Ali, etc.) all fall back to a high guard when they actually get hit. When Floyd takes a hard punch, he doesn't default to the Philly shell; he puts both hands up high and tight until he feels safe again. I think that say something about which style of guard is actually best for protecting you.

That is a really good point! I agree, and I will restate your point. I have my students start with a high guard, and eventually as they get better they will develop their own guard that is successful for them 75% of the time. Like you said if they get into trouble or do not feel safe they revert back to high guard. Thank you for your great insight and sharing your idea's. Thank you for commenting and your support.

I tried high guard in boxing it works the punches do not land at you but you still feel the impact of the punches even tho they are not landing but its still better than getting hit clean

You need to block punches with forearms not with gloves. So you need to raise a bit more your hands, ofc by doing this your body will be more open but doesn't exist a guard that covers all

That's if you just hold your gloves to your head and absorb. That's really the last resort. You should add other things to your guard, then it will turn from a passive to an active guard. Less damage and more offense for you.

I like using this type of guard during sparring it makes scoop parry/waslik a lot easier to use when parrying the jab and the cross

Your head needs to be constantly moving and you can also parry. Head movement is key.

when your hands are high blocking your peripheral vision and your opponent cuts an angle at you.... you'll end up in a hightlight video

The key is to learn body mechanics. Watching the chest and the body for attacks is key, because if you are trying to track punches with your eyes it will be too late to respond. It all starts with learning body mechanics.

high guard is an active guard not static, try put hands down from start and let me know what happens

@@sssss7831 Exactly. Joshua Clottey and Winky Wright don’t just put up their guard and sit there. They jab, manage distance. And Winky especially constantly is circling his opponent. Usually to their right side.
Neither of them have ever been knocked out. And very rarely knocked down. High guard is very effective but it’s not some sort of magic bullet.
