  • Super Alloy 1 contains cadmium. An antique pot metal table leg that's been broken in half is repaired with a propane torch and multi-metal solder Super Alloy 1.
Mike explains how to build up the heavy piece of pot metal, to join the broken pieces at 20,000 psi. He then turns the part over and repairs the other side using Super Alloy 1 and Heat Freeze Heat Paste (formerly Cool Blue)
Pot metal and zinc diecast have almost a lead weight to them. If the part is light in weight to the mass of material it is most likely cast aluminum. Super Alloy 1 does not work on cast aluminum.
Heat Freeze eliminates re-melting of the original solder and also acts as a jig to hold the part in place while making the repair.
Always clean your pot metal and zinc diecast just prior to soldering the part. These metals oxidize quickly. The old saying is, don't clean it the night before, clean it right before you solder. Heavier sections like this part needed more preheating than most parts. Always heat the area adjacent to the section to be repaired. This will help the solder flow out flatter and will stay warm longer.
The Super Alloy 1 melts at a low temperature to prevent your pot metal from being ruined when soldering. Follow the tips and techniques in our videos and you should never approach the melting temperature of the parent metals.
Clean the flux residue off the rod before returning it to the PVC tube.
