I have done a lot of drywall finishing over my lifetime and can give you a few tips.
First, now I only use Dust Control pre-mixed compound made by USG Sheetrock brand. I use it straight out of the bucket without any dilution with water. Adding water will cause additional shrinkage and not adhere as well. You can skip the step of pre-filling gaps unless they are greater than 1/4 inch. Just apply a light/thin coat of compound and then the paper tape and use 4" knife to smooth out. Do not put more compound on top of tape during the first coat.
I usually start with the ceiling inside corners since they will take the longest to dry, then the other inside corners, then the butt joints and whatever screw heads are in the area I am working in. For the outside metal corner beads spread a coat of compound over the corner bead and adjacent wallboard and bed in the paper tape as you go.
After the first tape bedding coat dries, the second coat, what I call the “fill” coat can be applied with a 6" knife to cover all the tape joints and fill the tapered and non tapered joints to level with the wallboard. Prior to applying this second coat knockdown any high spots from the first coat that will interfere with a smooth second coat by scraping lightly with the drywall knife. No need to sand between coats. That is just wasted unnecessary effort and very messy. Second coat everything including the screw heads as the first coat will shrink some leaving divots. The third coat is what I call the “feather” coat. Use an 8" or 10" knife to apply a very thin final coat that will feather the edges of the joints into the bare drywall. In this step you can use just a small amount of water to dilute the compound for a nice smooth final coat. As in the second coat use the knife to scrape any high spots before applying the third coat. If this process is done as specified very little sanding will be necessary to get a nice smooth finish. I don't texture just prime and paint with a quality product.

@@ThisOffGridLife He's dead on on how to do it for first timers. You're not rushed with that mud and can do cleaner work with it as you can take your time. I been mudding whole rooms and patching drywall most my life and I use the exact same stuff as Jim mentioned. I very seldom use fast set unless it's a rush job or an occupied space. Oh and you might want to look into wet sanding in your smaller areas to eliminate dust and what not. Takes a little practice to get use to the sponge but really clearer way to go.

    • @stephenkennedy7931
      @stephenkennedy7931 2 роки тому +1

Durabon 90 is usually reserved for big or commercial jobs where the rush is on. it works but is much harder to sand cleanup of pail is important don't try to mix another batch in a un clean pail ( wont work) for the first time out the two of you didn't do bad after applying your mud use a 10" or 12 " knife or a bull trowel to flatten it out will leave a more consistant pass.

Instead of sanding, use a sponge and a compound bucket of warm water to over the dried compound on screw heads, joint lines and inside and outside corners. Make sure the 5x7 sponge is fine, not rough. This method keeps the dust down. Try it.

For muddying the inside corners some take a large closable plastic bag fill it with mud cut a tip out of the corner and squeeze the mud out of this small hole into the wall corner. Then apply tape. Quicker and less messy.

I am a journeyman drywaller. I guess I should do videos on the prep and taping and finishing drywall. But I have not done that yet.
    Some creative critique here.
If you installed mesh tape on the flats as mesh tape has a adhesive backing that sticks to the wall....and is very strong or stronger than Paper tape. Use Paper tape in the corners if you wish...for straight clean corners ....and used your hot mud to set or bed the paper tape 1st coat. And then you would be 1 step ahead of the game already..
Prefilling holes and large gaps sometimes is needed prior to taping.
Regular all purpose joint compound is all we use for taping normally. Unless we have large holes to cover up.
By the way.. I like your show and enthusiasm on aspects of building your own off grid home.
Oh.. Also using outside corners for Windows and corners.
If you using metal., plastic or paper bead. Hot mud will adhere better to all of them than all purpose joint compound.
1st and 2nd coating those areas. When You already have your corner bead Nailed on. By the way ..Hot mud shrinks less when drying. Regular joint compound shrinks a lot.
    Well happy drywalling!!!

Hi Katie and Greg, it looks brilliant. It is so interesting to see how people build in different parts of the world. I've just plasterboarded the chimney breast in my bedroom after all the plaster was crumbling off (1930's brick built house in the UK) and we skim the whole board here, rather than just the seams and screw holes. it came out pretty well but I was glad it wasn't a bigger space as my arms and shoulders felt like they were on fire afterwards 😂😂
Have a great week and happy sanding x

you guys are very inspiring! i love this whole series!! but never in my 10 years have i sanded after my first coat of mud. you usually dont prefill every joint unless it really needs it. if you notice the tapered ends on the drywall, thats mesnt for the tape to sit in so you dont have to put as much mud. so you dont wanna fill that with "hot mud" before taping. the patience you both have after seeing that is second to none, keep it up!
