In my opinion KORG added quite a bit of value to the Nautilus just by making this library free. It was a really cool move on their part and I hope Nautilus owners everywhere have the opportunity to try it out. Thanks Woody!

The M1 is the sound of British House music in the late 80s (and quite a bit of Chicago too) and was the first keyboard I ever lusted over. It was far out of my reach back then though- and I was still trying to be a drummer anyway.

Korg has one rare feature on most its synths, the ability to overwrite presets with your own patches. Presets are okay to discover your new synth, but after that I want them out of the way. Nostalgia presets are certainly valuable for nostalgia bands.

Problem was that many didnt have a clue about creating presets, hence why so many iconic presets were used on various records. The original presets shaped genres and styles.

While it will never be quite like the original, and will never have the exact same character of the original, i was quite surprised by the warmth, depth and punch of the sound. They have done a fine job, for sure

Some of these sounds of the M1 don't sound like the OG M1, and some combinations from expansion are just edited sounds from the Nautilus. It's cool that Korg gave us the M1 for Nautilus just like the Kronos, but vintage keyboard are way better in sound quality

I like that Korg added the M1 free for Nautilus users. Great iconic synth that I have sold when they came out in 88. I use the Korg collection software version currently and I’m thinking about getting the Nautilus AT but I like what Karma brings to the table and will wait to see what Korg hopefully has as their Kronos replacement.

I owed the M1 from about 1991 up until 4 years ago. It was an amazing keyboard that never seemed to be outdated. I was never a big fan of the piano sounds but I didn't buy it for the piano sounds. Nice review and agree that the sounds are not identical to the real M1 but close enough.

    • @classicarcadeamusementpark4242
      @classicarcadeamusementpark4242 9 місяців тому

Agreed on the piano sounds. The sounds of the M1 were, and still are great, but the piano while good for 1988 wasn't too special for long as most newer keyboards put a lot more memory into pianos.

I don't have a Nautilus but i think it's great to have acces with softwarebanks/vst's in this day and age. I can remember that this was not possible for normal money...😅
One get's a bit greedy, because i got 60 Synth-VST's in Ableton and i became fan of NI but i will never use all of them in my lifetime...
It's so nice to hear what you've missed or could not buy, because i don't want to have a museum (i wish) and repair an old synth every other week!!😂
I'm allright with 99% original sounds though.
Thanks for showing Woody, love your type of channel for years on end now.

Really wish Korg would release this pack for the Kronos. Many of the Samples like the wellknown Piano and organs and most of the DWGS waveforms that dates back to the DW8000 are already in the rom sounds. You can pick the samples out of the Nautilus pack for the Kronos, but the Nautilus .pcg format is not compatible with the Kronos because of the Karma/arpegiator difference so you have to recreate the patches manually, and it is so timeconsuming to sample my old T3. And the already available samples is not all named like on the original sample sheet of the M/T series so in some cases you have to manually search thru the rom sounds and listen to them. They did however release a free eavestation pack and a favorite Triton pack which is based on already available samples in the Kronos that is almost true to the original beside some minor technical details betwen how the wavesequencing works in the wavestation vs the Kronos. I really wouldn't mind if they charged something for those sounds. There is nothing about either the Nautilus or Kronos that hinders you to recreate most of the sounds you know from the M/T series, Trininty/Triton/Wavestation if you have the original samples

    Great video as usual!
Had an M1 when it came out. It was the best rompler we had at the time, and had an 8-track sequencer, and therefore the reason everyone used it. Mindblowing at the time.
But aside from nostalgia, I don't see a reason to go back to those lame sounds, as opposed to something like a D-50 which still sounds amazing to this day. Even a few of the D-50 utilitarian bread n butter sounds are still great sounding.

Back in 1989, I had gotten and M1R work station, and have some unbelievable programs and Combi sounds, that I created.. I was able to save many of them on a MEGA RAM card that holds 3 complete sets(holds total of4), one being the original set sounds...SInce then my M1R died on me.. I still have this card.. I need to get with Korg and see if they would be interested in them, because some of them are better than the original set. I still may have on a floppy disc too..lol showing my age..lol

There is still so much you can do with these patch sounds just turned 20 when the M1 came on the Scene I got the M audio hammer 88 ( Not Pro ) and i most admit it sounds pretty good for 499.00, lol😂 i like the weight of the keys a little clunky at times but you get quite a bit of sounds. Korg M1 vst will sound really good on it i bet. Had to order it Cause it was out of stock. 4 1/2 to 5 star reviews. 🌟

Hello, Woody, can I ask you a side question? What would you recommend to protect the bottom of the synthesizer from scratches when working with keyboard stands? Recently I bought a new stand and realized that my synthesizer is not touching the rubber parts of the stand, but rests entirely on the metal. Any advice? My fellow musicians don't seem to care.

The M1 had the disadvantage of leading all sounds to the same effects. If you chose a rotary effect for the organ, the drums also got the same rotary effect. With the drums you couldn't get a dry bassdrum when the reverb was on. I hope Korg has fixed this with this Nautilus expansion.

You'll really need the new model Nautilus to really take advantage of the M1 because aftertouch was a hugely important feature of M1 sound libraries.
Much more exciting than the M1 sound pack for the Nautilus however would be Korg's full M1 soft synth which can be run on an iPad (starting at $329 new) or on a laptop. Many of the best M1 sounds were not part of the original factory sound library. Korg's soft synth allows you to load both 3rd party sounds and many other expansion sounds Korg offered. The Nautilus M1 collection barely scratches the surface, and is not a big selling point for the Nautilus. The original factory sounds are widely available for many of today's current powerful synths such as the MODX/Montage, Kronos & likely Fantom. You don't need to buy a Nautilus to get these limited factory sounds the Nautilus is offering.
Also, Korg offers their full Wavestation soft synth for iPhone also which probably half of America already owns. It's not limited to just what the Wavestation came with originally, but offers all the expansion and 3rd party sounds plus full synth editing ability. A fair amount of the M1 sounds are available for the Wavestation as it was very similar technology. With a Yamaha MODX like I have, there is built-in iPhone/iPad support with a single wire connected. I think I paid $20 for the App with all expansion sounds made by Korg included.
I have two original Korg M1 keyboards and know it well and have greatly explored M1 sound libraries, and I've loaded most of my favorites into Korg's M1 soft synth on my laptop.
