Growing up here in Michigan, from the time I entered school The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village were usually School field trips. I think it's still that way in some schools. I still go every summer. I have been going for over 45 years and every time I go it's still amazing. Thanks for sharing Jay, fun stuff.
It's amazing,i never knew anybody from the Ford family but Mr.Ford managed to create something that was a part of the history of my family and a lot other people's families, like my grandpa had several Fords,my father and myself, they're in the old pictures, and people remembers affectionately of those cars as if they were relatives, that we owe to the Ford family.
A ever been to the Ford museum, sounds wonderful. It is such a terrible shame that folks can no longer have the opportunity to see the Harrahs car collection in Reno. I recall the rows of Dusenbergs among the 1000s of vehicles, restoration shops etc. I regret not being able to take my son for a visit, I was 21 when I last visited and not long after Bill Harrah died and the collection was broken up. Few sports cars, which make Jays collection spectacular but very historical.
The Goldenrod, a former land speed record holder with four Hemi engines, is in the Henry Ford Collection. It was lettered and detailed by a sign painter from Philadelphia, Pa named Charles Handschuh, who also lettered the Hemi Under Glass. He wasn't a car guy. He was my great Uncle. A very interesting and talented man.
The HFM is definitely a must see! Even the Spirit of St Louis is hanging in there! & the letter Clyde Barrow wrote to Henry about how much he loved the V8 model A. And the GT 40 MK IV in there is drop-dead sexy! I got to go there on a senior Auto Tech field trip from OH.
Jay should also have an oil club. This week on Jay's oil club we look at this vintage 1993 castrol which was a great year because of the quality crude oil.
Thats his Shogun. I believe there were 7 transformed total. Its a 88-93 Festiva (dates?) with a Ford Taurus SHO motor and tranny put in the back. 300HP and less than 2000lbs. Lots of fun :)
In the Henry Ford Museum is a massive 'Gas-Steam' power plant engine that Henry Ford specifically fought to save from the old Highland Park Model T plant, one of nine that were there. My grandfather, Elmer LeSuer, was the draftsman to the designer, Edward Gray. Gray sold Mr. Ford his first power plant engine for that plant from his shop in Oil City, PA, Riverside Engine where my grandfather worked for Mr. Gray for nearly four years before Ford decided to hire Gray away from there and grandpa came with him. Gray left Ford Motor in 1914 to devote time to his Grayhaven project on the Detroit River. Grandpa initially stayed on and worked for William B. Mayo, who took over for Gray when he left for. About the time that Gray left the trade journal of the day, 'Power' decided to do a story on the Gas-Steam engine and quoted grandpa about the engine and it's design. Grandpa left Ford also a little later working again for Gray until about 1919 when the family moved back to Pennsylvania until 1937 when Gray had the idea of building a 'steam-diesel locomotive and hired my grandfather again to do drafting work for it. Gray died in 1937 and grandpa stayed on to work for Gar Wood, the famous speed boat racer and boat builder until grandpa died in 1945. His last project for Gar Wood was designing a transmission system for 'Storm Boats', high speed assault boats for a crew of 8 soldiers during WWII. The story about the massive 'Gas Steam' engine is here- flic.kr/p/2kDryqr
Thanks, been to Henry Ford Museums couple rimes, before relocating to HELENA MT: Great place, everyone should go. Also, another treat is Studebaker Museum in SOUTH BEND IN!!
Something got lost in the description of the family tree. Edsel was also Henry Ford's 1st's son, who was the father of Henry Ford the Second. There are also William Clay Ford, and Bill Ford, his son.
I just want to buy the book on the Henry Ford Museum website.. It's $95 I have no problem paying that, what I do have a problem with is paying $78 to ship. What the fuck
Hm, the controversy part on the Wikipedia page on Ford confuses me... I'm Dutch, don't know as much about the man as such, yet intrigued by it nonetheless.
I would like to recommend a book for book club; Modern Motorcycle Mechanics by J B Nicholson. Pretty much the bible for motorcycle enthusiasts. They just released a new version.
would like to know who Henry III is. In Wkipedia he does not appear in Henry or Edsel Ford's family tree? In Google I didn't find anything. Can someone enlighten me?
OK, First: really want to go to that museum someday. Second: Henry Ford was a genius, American icon, etc...BUT...He did buy a newspaper to serve specifically as an anti-semite organ (published "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" in it), was decorated by Hitler before the 2nd World War, & would fire any employee he found to be driving a non-Ford car. Third: To maintain the Ford theme: Did y'all catch that lttle Shogun over in the corner there? Classic piece of Ford-on-Ford hotrod kit
The same Henry Ford who was paying his employees in 1914 the then unheard of salary of $5.00 a day? I looked for proof of your claim about him not paying his employees and didn`t really find anything, perhaps you can provide the link.
Every car collector should be like Jay Leno who enjoys his automobiles everyday...and not just store them and to just look at them in my opinion..at the end, whats the point of buying them any way?
If u love cars the museum is great but they have so much more the most amazing thing they have but didn't mention is the chair Lincoln was sitting in when he was shot u can still see the blood stain they even have the wiener mobile
Jay, buy my 52 Chevy Coupe so i can buy something i can actually drive. I'm looking for a 64 Impala with auto. Huge car guy with a right leg amputee and can't drive stick. HELP!!! lol
So you would prefer he had not developed anything at all? That very production line which you despise was the reason cars could be made so cheaply, cheap enough for his own workers to afford..

Seems like a nice guy, represents the Ford family and company well.
Jay is a great guy. I don't care what anyone says. He's still the best.
