Lovely car. Pure class and these things feel liek they run on whipped cream, instead of something as toxic and dirty as petrol or diesel! Truly refined build!
Great car! This is exactly what I want - a W124 300D with a manual transmission. It's quite difficult to find one of these considering most W123 and W124 300Ds out there are in automatic. And this one looks like it's in good condition too.
@@mbz4652 It was swapped, no 6 cylinder turbodiesel ever came with manual transmission. I'd even go to the extent of saying that this unit was imported from the USA to Europe and then it had the manual transmission and MPH to Km/h instrument cluster retrofitted.
All 300d turbo are 4 speed automatic with 2.65 differential , so swapping the gearbox with 5 speed gearbox that means gears will be too tonger thus rpm dont go up normally means you will be on higher speed on every giving gear , I had the same thing it was very fun to drive on 2500 rpm and up between 1200 and 2000 rpm it sucks so bad , so only solution is accelerating to high rpm all the time to keep the rpm in good range for decent torque
Depends on what 5 speed gearbox you use.... from what model. The higher gears will never be too long. Just use a lower gear. The only problem can be 1:st gear that will be too high then. Or that they whole setup doesnt match the speeds you're usually driving. But change the rear diff then.
Very reassuring to see that I'm not the only one who goes mad when something's squeaking or rattling in the car. 😄 Is it the seat or the arm rest? The 300 D Turbo is pretty quick considering that it has not even 150 HP. Very nice car! And Portugal is just beautiful.
It's the seatbelt buckle that is making this annoying squeaking and rattling noise :/ I'll try to fix it soon, together with the center vents and gauge needles :)
Over 30 years old MB and seat belt squeezing only. 3 years old MB sqeezing whole interior. Sound deadening butyl plates for solid plastics, sound insulation foam, textil tape or adhesive carpet for isolation plastic parts.. is my solution for plastic interior parts. Hate sqeezing, ratling... interiors.
Fascinating car. Amazing to see how good the engine correspondends with the long diff. Did you use the 717.430 with single-mass flywheel or the .433 with dmf? To have better connection of gear ratio for all driving situations I would recommend to try the 2.87 diff from the auto N/A 603 or the 3.07 from an auto 300 E. It will be still long enough for good mileage and comofortable cruising at highway. Indeed the 2.65 would be good for German Autobahn ;) I am planning to swap my N/A 300 D this year using a 717.430 gearbox. Still collecting some parts… When the swap is done and will be working fine, I‘d like to try a longer ratio than original (3.46). Maybe I will try 3.07 or 3.27… 2.87 (original spec for auto gearbox) would be too long for city driving, especially with the single mass flywheel which does not allow low rpms without noises/vibration. Lack of power should not be a problem when I see your car. I assume the turbo engine has the same power/torque output below 1500-1800 rpm than the naturally aspirated engine. And as I can see here it works pretty good. We will see… Was driving an original manual 300 D with DMF for 100 k km and the ratio was a good compromise between acceleration/driveability and fuel consumption but if there is any chance to lower highway rpm (original around 2800 at 120 km/h) I would be grateful. Do you have any special hints for me regarding the swap? Any things that I should know before I dismantle the car? Any „showstoppers“ that could ruin my day? Thank you so much! 603 driver‘s greetings from northern Germany! PS: Good to see that there are still people out there that have the right feeling for manual gearboxes. You shift great! Always using correct rpm according to driving situation. Often see vids where people are shifting very rough and fast and much too late (e.g. shifting at 3000 rpm in coty driving and low acceleration…). Good job! Sorry for the long text :)
Hello there! This is going to be a long comment :) First of all I want to say you got some really beautiful cars! U treat them very well and I love how u customized them for your own needs and what u felt like was „missing“ (talking about the W124 300D manual and the W140 8speed ZF) Since the number plate indicates you are Portuguese, I hope they will have a really nice rust free rest of their life in the sun haha :^) If you don‘t mind I would like to ask you a couple of questions about the W124 diesel and W140. 1.Is any of the cars a US (re)-import? 2.What transmission is in the W124 and did u make any changes to the gear ratios? (I saw that u are running the default diff with 2.65 ratio or smth.) 3. How did u get the ZF 8speed (I think u said it‘s the ZF8HP75) to work in the W140? (If u can‘t answer that, it‘s fine) I‘d love to know though, what made u choose exactly that transmission? 4.What does the fuel consumption say of both of the cars? 5.(I‘m from germany) In germany we can get an Oldtimer/Youngtimer registration for those cars which makes them cheaper in taxes etc., can u guys get the same in Portugal even with the changes to the cars? With the stock 2.65 differential it feels a bit weird, yes.

Is that the stock 2.65 differential or you put something else?
It is the stock 2.65, yes :)
I had the same thing , if you put a 3.07 diff it will drive so much better
The biggest advantage you have now is the low rpm on the highway, 2000 rpm used to make 130km on 5th gear , that was so fabulous
