    68 years ago my parents built our house in the corner of a wheat field. We cam e home from church and neighbors were in the back of the house talking about what they would have changed. The next day my Dad put a sign in the yard saying "SUITS US"

      Sounds familiar to this day aswell. People like to judge the way you do it. I ´´restored´´ an old barn so it would become usable again after 1-2decades abandoned made it to a shop instead. And left it to look like shit from the outside since people cant leave places alone anymore.
      Had people tell me all the time: You should have done it this and that way instead blablalbalaa.
      I asked for advice when needed since i havent done stuff like this before from mulitple people and picked and chose the ones i liked.

    Absolutely follow frost protected guidelines for shallow footings, if you dont the frost will push the whole back side of the house up. Easy to do and well worth the investment, nice house!

    It’s surprising how different construction of walls are from Northern Illinois than the western USA. We attach the Plywood on exterior walls and foam, then stand the walls. We build entire wall, then stand the wall. Then we nail down bottom plate to the floor. No toenailing of each stud. To each it’s own. Thank you for sharing.

  • @owenspalding971
    @owenspalding971 11 місяців тому +23

    You might already be planning this but you might want to consider a 4ft wide apron of 2-3in thick foam at the bottom of the footing on the back side of your house. That is the "frost protected" part of "shallow frost protected footings"

      Think about how many small farms have been swallowed up by this farm. That is the downside of our agriculture system, designed for chemical inputs and poison sprays and to suppress and bankrupt the small holdings. This isn't to say they aren't nice people.

    To get power you need to be off-grid and put a 10kw solar panel array on your roof with a 8kw inverter then you have power, there is no need to connect gas (propane) as you should install a induction cooktop and get a solar heat-pump HWS, for heating and cooling installed a reverse cycle airconditioner that can heat and cool your house.

    Nick, hopefully you have truck access to where the pickups are parked, as a general rule you get the septic tank pumped once a year to clean out the material that doesn't digest in the tank, as it will cause a lot of grief if not removed on a regular basis.
    The most amount of hose kept on a septic truck usually runs ~50 feet, some try and get away with less.
    Best wishes from the far North.

    It will be alot of work but it will be worth it in the end ! 2010 I orderd a New house ! but on sept 9th we had a 100mph wind go threw and cleaned my alfalfa seed crop off and I lost $1.5 million in crop without insurance. 2018 I order a 2000 sq/ft home from M&K from Lethbridge AB . did the same foam block basement and couldn't be happier , finished the basement myself ! so we have 3 bedrooms on the main floor with 2 & 1/2 Bath on the main floor , basement has 3 large bedrooms ,1 1/2 bathrooms , a 30x20 TV room with 3 -70 inch big screen TV's ( wife doesn't know why I need 3 TV's), Plus a cold storage room for storing garden crops ! Water room , and Furnace & electrical room. and I Love it !! Coming from living in a house that was built in 1923 with no insulation and 800 sq/ft on the main floor with 2 tiny bedrooms above and a basement that the walls were falling in ! I'm 67 now and finally have the house of my dreams Farming ! but I retired from farming

    First. Congrats on the home getting built. I bet yall can't wait to move in. I'm sure this comment will be too late, but you had mentioned using chambers in your leach field. If it's the half barrel looking ones I'm thinking of, I'd suggest not using those for system longevity. I've seen over and over those fail due to the effluent slowly clogging each chamber with biomat(like a domino effect to each chamber). Down the road when you try to hydrojet them you can't because the jetter just falls in the first chamber and can't reach the others. If your running standard perforated lines the whole way, and not what I mentioned above then no worries. I just didn't want to see a known issue (for septic techs anyway) to get ya later down the road. That said, thx for the videos!

    Building a house is an awesome experience if you are prepared for all the decisions to be made (and it certainly appears you are).
    We weren't sure about room dimensions either. I ended up laying out our main floor in our back yard. I used a couple dozen tent stakes and measured things out, even to the 2x6 external walls and 2x4 internal walls. Then I mowed the lawn and let the "walls" grow. After a month, the pattern was awesome. My wife even measured furniture and trial fit that into various rooms and sprinkled flour out to denote a bed or chair. Our deck was about 5 feet above grade so you could look down the floor plan. It was really helpful to visualize things.
    Congratulations on making your dreams come true!

    Great job of work! It’s years since we built our house but as farmers we also did all the ground work, sewage, concrete work and we had a bit of steel work too( we saved a lot of money at the time by being able to cut and weld a few lengths of rsj) being able to do the work ourselves meant we could actually build the house we wanted , but in all honesty we didn’t really have the interior finished for years after we moved in because we found that the cost of the fit out was completely dependent on the spec of the finish. We had a kitchen and living room two bedrooms and a bathroom finished when we moved in and slowly finished the house as cash became available, worked for us. Meant we had a house about half as big again as we could afford to have completely finished day one.

      It's nuts what they control. I don't want to make make fun of the situation as there is some merit to it. It's just that there are many ways to skin a cat and get the job done effectively and efficiently. We have a property that had the original septic tank and field from 1965. The house never grew in size and the water use stayed the same. But at some point the county deemed it obsolete and made us do an expensive pressure system with a new tank. The old system was checked and had no issues! But nope, government must be there to lend a helping hand at the expense of permits and taxes and huge fines if you don't comply.

  • @badgerpa9
    @badgerpa9 11 місяців тому +1

    I have not seen a basic septic system in a few years, always need multiple tanks and often they want a mound system even if the soil tests ok to go without a mound. We do get our water from the ground though so probably a good idea to have the better systems. I may have missed it but I always do at least a 4 foot wall with footer on the walkout side as I always build in the frost zone, I did not see that. Down south I have seen they do not do that. Make sure they put proper flashing above and sides on the windows and doors it stinks when water comes in because there is no flashing around a window and door. Stay safe and healthy.

    Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable.
    Congratulations, your new home is coming along great. Starting to take shape and look like a house. Great. Takes a lot of planning and making sure everything fits the way you want it. Step by step.
    Love the part of the video where the kids were talking about their rooms and how to arrange them. They are excited. Nice you let them do that. Great.
    You have your big pieces done now like your septic tank and such. Now finish off all of your dirt work to level things off. Glad you have those big pieces of equipment to move the dirt around.
    Coming along great Nick and family. Will be a nice home for all of you.
    Thanks for everything Nick. You take care and be safe.
    Thanks.
    The Iowa Farm Boy. Steve.

    Great job, house looks good and I’m sure you’re anxious to move in.
    Always admire the amount of work you and your family are able to do yourselves
    As they say it’s all about the tools and equipment
    Enjoy and stay safe!

    Interesting way to stand up internal walls, fixing the bottom plates down first then stand the walls.

    Your new home is progressing fast. It is interesting to hear the kids describe where their toy box goes etc. The dirt movers are sure making the dust fly. You have the machines needed to do it. Keep up the great work. Remember to take lots of pictures. 😊

    Looks magnificent! I’d did a carpentry apprenticeship back last century and work in the trade for a few years afterwards and I think you are missing something. That would be the metric measuring system. Boy that would make your lives easier. I’m sure it will turn out pretty good though.🇦🇺

      @@WelkerFarms Imagine that. It’s going to be further to town, your farm size will be smaller but your rainfall chart will have a lot bigger number. Tonnes/Ha in yield, bar on the boom spray gauge, litres/Ha of chemical, the list goes on. But your 6.2 litre V8 is still the same.
