- Capcom's Resident Evil ports for Switch have been pretty good so far, but what's the score with the latest Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6? Capcom has released demo code, we've downloaded both and checked them out. The basics are there, resolution is high, but performance isn't quite right.

Should be a crime charging $29.99 each.
100% agree.
Sue them.
the only crime is seeing fools pay that price and support this model.
Don't know about other regions, but on the UK store they're 33% off if you've bought either Zero, Remake or 4.
It's an even bigger crime selling these Resident Evil Switch eShop ports for $19.99 limited time discounted sale prices when these games are $19.99 on other platforms by default. I mean, Resident Evil 4 on sale on the Switch eShop for $19.99 this week is NOT a sale unless it is less than $19.99.

I always say that re 5 looks better then re 6 guess they spend the time with re6 with different stuff then the graphics.
For anyone curious the framerate is slightly improved in the final game. Demos could be under 30 a lot and the full game while not locked stays in the 40’s

im just waiting for a Code Veronica HD port!
And a PC port too
Id be all over that
Seiya D Luffy yeah even that. But unfortunately the ports have been on 360 and PS3 for years with no signs of other ports. Though it is backwards Compatible on Xbox One but no 4K enhancement.
Be prepared to pay 49.99 for it

Imagine wanting 30 euro for a game that runs around 25fps straight from 2012.

If there's anyone watching this now, I just bought and tried the final version of the game. I'm not through it yet, but I'm a few hours in and the performance seems fairly solid. There are times of inconsistencies, but it's not nearly as bad as the demo in this video.
Not sure if the full game just performs better than the demo or one of the patches improved performance, but it definitely seems better. I do think capping the game at 30 FPS and having a dynamic res would have done wonders, but overall I really enjoy this game. The visual quality is excellent on Switch particularly in portable play on the OLED. The reason I bought it though was to experience RE motion controls again, and I can say it is the best implementation of gyro controls for shooter on the Switch that I've played so far.
Just lock the frame rate at 24fps and call it "More cinematic."
I assume this is a joke right?
@@teneesh3376 no, it's a reference
The initial scene with helicopter is really CHOPPY, i see what you did there John :P
"shadows are slightly lower resolution" understatement of the year lmao
Hahah my thought exactly lol in othe comparisons he might say that the shadow res has dropped significantly and I can't realy tell much, but in this case "slightly dropped" hahah
Worth mentioning that both demos feature very busy scenes which aren't common throughout the full games, so performance in general will probably be better on average than that seen in the demos.
I beat RE5 on 360, PS3 and PS4, but I actually prefer the Switch version. Being able to play it on the go or on my couch or bed is totally worth the small sacrifice.
Capcom will never stop porting! And I kinda don't want them to :/
I don't want them to stop, I just want them to start doing it right.
Make ports great again
and they will do it ALL OVER AGAIN on ps5... very exciting times ahead!
So in short, for RE5, they should have locked 30 and dynamic res. Do that and it would be a good port.
So why didn't they? Switch can do this.
Switch could nail this game at 60fps if handled by a competent team, Capcom just think they can throw any old shit on the Switch and it would sell.
They simply don't put in any effort. Switch owners are treated as a source for quick cash-grabs.
Given these ports on Switch were designed for X1 and PS4 first, it might be CPU issues causing frame drops.
Good optimozation could be a more stable 30 fps. But there is no proof games like these can do 60 fps on Switch.
the games runs fine @720p undocked , they did a mistake setting the game at full HD , i think if they just reduced to 900p or 720p you won't get low framerates
... Can it though?
Let’s remember this game came out on last gen consoles and ran like this if not better
Ps3 and x360 era was not a generation for smooth frame rate, especially the Ps3, i think i played around 6 games a certain year that were either low to mid 20 fps.
let's remember that the switch is PORTABLE AND BASICALLY A TABLET.
@@franciscor390 I agree
Your new phone has a more powerful SoC than the one in the Switch. Let's remember that as well.
@@matthewsmith1779 what's the price difference?
They released RE4 running at 900p docked on Switch and sub-native in portable mode (i think it was 600p if I'm not mistaken?) just so it would meet its target of 60FPS more consistently than otherwise.
Those games are obviously more demanding than RE4 and the Switch versions of RE5 and 6 are more based on the PS4 and XB1 versions in terms of visual settings so it's obvious that the Switch will struggle more than those other systems to meet 1080p at a consistent level of performance. So... WHY THE HECK did they force them in 1080p and 720p (like they did RER 2 back in 2017 btw) and why the heck do they leave them uncapped instead of capping them at 30FPS? I could live with the absence of motion blur in RE5, really. I never played the original so I wouldn't know what I'm missing out on. But framerate is something that would obviously stand out to any first time player as an issue on Switch.
I know they COULD patch this, if enough people complained... but this is Capcom. They basically haven't patched post-launch ANY of their other RE games on Switch, except something about RE4 I think, but I can't recall what that did, it didn't improve performance anyway, that's for sure. So I'm not gonna hold my breath. So you see Capcom, this is how some people like me see you. You know you could make things better, but we know you won't even before the game has launched. That's the kind of company we take you for. I'd be happy to be proven wrong of course. But I know I'm right. And pissed.
This. Unfortunate but true. They couldn't even bother to fix the load times or framerate drops in RE0/1. Games with prerendered backgrounds... somehow not holding 30fps. If this doesn't reek of negligence, I don't know what does.
They went out of there way to patch the leaderboards of re4. Somebody hacked them to say “add gyro” 😂 the only patch that has hit the switch. Both revelations, remake, zero, 5,6 will never receive updates. Capcom is pathetic
No Mercy on The Mercenaries mode will run at like 5 FPS lol
Well, The Mercenaries No Mercy was a PC exclusive because of it's power capability, so i remember, so i don't expect it to be on Switch either
@@Lucios1995 True, but they added No Mercy when they released the ports on PS4 and XBONE. The problem isn't even No Mercy needing demanding hardware, because honestly these are awful ports that are poorly optimized and they run choppy anyway even when playing the game regularly. I doubt they will remove No Mercy, but it will run like shit.
@@Lucios1995 nope it's on there. About to see how it runs
Great analysis. Thank you. I wonder how these games would look and perform on the Switch when lowered to 720P and using the mClassic to clean up the visuals. Someone please make this happen.
Is there a video or article covering your analysis methods and techniques? I'd be facinated to find out more, but I also understand you might be hesitant about sharing the secret sauce recipe.
Idk if it is just me but the games run great on the Switch. I was expecting them to look horrible after this video but they improved them since release, I believe. RE6 in particular looks very impressive.
Yeah I purchased RE6 on Switch. There is some framerate inconsistencies at times, but not even close to what was shown here. I can also this game looks super impressive, especially on the Switch OLED screen. Also of all the Switch shooters I've played so far, this has the best implementation of gyro controls. Works flawlessly.
I noticed they made a couple additional patches on top of the day 1 update required update to add gyro controls, so wondering if they improved performance in one of those.
Digital Foundry is good if you want to know some of the frame rate stuff, i usually just skip to this parts and see the graph for myself. Otherwise, if you actually listen to them talk, it becomes "The Nitpick Channel" and I just can't be interested in that. All I care about is if a game runs smooth, and plays well. The details they go into sometimes, I just want to roll my eyes at how little it matters.
@@KitRobin "All I care about is if a game runs smooth, and plays well." - Basically the video shows that it runs terrible and plays terrible. I mean a 18 years old console ran this game with higher frames and with better graphics lol. It's not nitpicking, it's just calling a garbage what it is. A garbage.
I had high hopes for these ports. I remember being stunned by how good the Resident Evil games on the 3ds looked and played. This is just disappointing in comparison.
The 3DS games looked good because they were built from the ground up for that system. Switch is just getting unoptimized ports from PS4 version.
RE5 is still a beautiful looking game after 10 years
@Jonathan Soko it is.
The most interesting part to me was hearing about the Switch version runing at better frame rate and at higher resolution (1080p) than the Shield TV version even when the Shield runs with the X1 at it's full clocks. i think these 2 games would have been great candidates for offering performance vs "sugar candy" modes.
Would like to see an Overclocking of the Switch version. i know Richard say he's busy but maybe he should do a next round up of Switch overclocking when there are various other games that would be interesting to investigate.
Its one thing when they re-release a port of a game on last gen system for an over inflated price on Switch but its another when that port doesn't even run well compared to other competing systems. The fact that they seriously expect us the consumer to spend $79.99 CAD on Resident Evil Triple Pack (4,5,6) and only have RE4 on the card and be okay with the poor performance is just absurd.

Can you guys do a Darksiders 2 for Nintendo Switch review? It’s my favorite in the series and I’m having a blast right now. Also I’m hoping for a future port of Kingdoms of Amalur🤞
Can you guys add a dotted line at 30 on your framerate graph or something? I know your tool is broken into increments of 20, but when 30 is such a common framerate I do wish I could tell how closely something is sticking to 30.
Great video as usual, though!
I wonder why devs keep leaving frame rates unlocked in games that flop around between 30 and 60 constantly. I'd rather have a stable 30 than a jittery 40-50.
Its a way to get better performance coming from a Potential new powerful switch in the future . That way they find a reason to not make a new game update ...

1) Capcom needs to learn to do a bit of optimization. They've got years of learning MT Framework, they need to show they can actually do their job.
2) WE. NEED. QUALITY. AND. PERFORMANCE. OPTIONS. Both games are 1080p docked, and that's fine, but most of us (myself included) would be ok sacrificing a bit of resolution for a steadier performance.
I'm sure they know how to optimize, they just don't give a shit about the Switch. Their first efforts on the system (Revelations 1+2, but especially 1) ran well, even at 1080p. Revelations 1 was hitting around the 60fps mark quite frequently, and while Revelations 2 not so much, it still didn't chug along like these recent ports. This just shows they simply don't care.
I know right , like 900p on tv wouldnt be bad
Passionately put. Capcom really are taking the piss. Bit of an insult, actually

I love DF but honestly, sometimes the things they point out, which I must say I appreciate how they pick games apart and let us know what we r getting, but many times I don’t even notice these things and still enjoy the games.
Which is perfectly fine in my opinion! It's kinda always like that if you haven't seen what the other versions look like, so that's understandable.
If you got your money's worth and having a good time, then you got your money's worth and having a good time. I have Resident Evil Revelation 2 on my VITA due to a sale, and I had a good time with it. The port is crap, but I still love the game. Lmao

That lack of motion blur is gonna be a nope from me. It made the game look so amazing on last gen consoles
Also the leather pouch that chris knife holds doesn’t move in the switch version when it does on the xbox 360 version. I know It’s a subtle thing but it’s something I noticed.
It's funny how these are the same demos that we played when they first came out in 2008 or 09, whenever the original came for 5 on 360 and ps3 aswell as re6 demo in 2012, it just shows Capcoms talent at laziness.
900p would be a good resolution to have a stable framerate
720p is more than enough to have stable framerate
@@alinepiroutek8932 but the switch can handle more than 720p, actually, the switch can handle this game in 1080p 30 fps, but the problem is the optimization from Capcom
@@lucaspereirahmj Capcom couldn't even make 120p full 30fps due to lack of optimization.
in 2019 we should not have anything less than 1440p out of a game system for 300 bucks bulshit
@@alonofisrael4802 While I agree that higher resolutions would be better, the small size of the Switch screen really makes it pointless.
I actually prefer games without motion blur; as it creates the illusion that it runs smoother and at at higher fps. That being said; I hope they patch in higher and stable fps (locked 45 or 60)) and if they can't at least cap it at 30 fps. I would actually want them to give us the option of performance and quality modes like other Switch games have; if possible. I would take 720p docked; if it meant higher fps. At least maybe then; if we get a Switch Pro or 2; maybe they will run better? I can forgive fps dips when the action is really crowded and chaotic, as long as most of the normal parts are consistent.
If the moment hasn't passed already, how about a short vid on the Switch ports of GRID Autosport and Asphalt 9?
For DF Retro, I think Rogue Squadron II on the Gamecube would be a very good subject.
Love RE5 , played it on XBOX 360 , PC , XBOX one , did all the DLC with a friend . We have come along way in PC power, back in the day it was hard to get past 100 Fps with a single card , But this game had super SLI support.
Test it on the overclocked Switch to see if it's CPU, GPU or both.
Capping it at 30fps also would have saved some battery life.
I bought these ports a couple of years ago. I haven't played 6 yet, but RE5 actually runs pretty decently now. Weirdly, there was actually an update late last year for RE5 and I have not been able to find out what it was for.
Well, my very first experience with RE5 was on a PC with Radeon HD4350 card and I was happy to have 25fps on 800x600 on medium settings.
The final version of each game runs significantly better than these demos.
I think they look amazing on the Nintendo Switch and I had so much fun playing them both games Re5 Re6 🙏🏽
i played RE4 more than 80 hours till now on switch. i completed it 3 times in normal difficulty and 2 times in pro mode. i was very happy with RE4 on switch and now purchased RE5 + RE6 for $20 each (discount for having RE4) and i think 28 framerate is still good at least for me. in RE4 it was near that and i don't feel it bad, it was very good for me and i was happy to complete game 5 times on my portable device. now downloading RE5 and RE6 and mostly will download Demo because i can't wait till 29 Oct to play complete game. thank you capcom !

If they lowered down the resolution to 900p for both the games, then performance would fare better.

@@HeavyMetalSonicRM Bruh, no Switch game runs on 4K. Its not a major hit the game would take in the graphics department.

Its not when there's a marked dip in performance. Running games on 900p on the Switch is still okay as long as it improves framerates. You can still scale 900p manually. Not the ideal solution but its a compromise.

I played both the demos docked and handheld and I had 0 issues. I quite enjoyed them myself. It’s a definite buy for me.
It makes you wonder if they ever do release a switch Pro, will these unlocked frame rate games ever get close to 60fps? Seems like 900p would have helped in these ports for docked maybe.
I find it hilarious that they were able to make these games run consistently with better model quality and better detail with a fraction of the RAM available on Xbox 360 and EVEN PS3 (almost half of Xbox 360's RAM). And yet, the Switch with 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM runs much worse. I mean, even given that LPDDR4 may be a little slower effectively than GDDR3 the Switch can store WAY more information at a time. There is really no reason they couldn't have made this port better than this.
They should have used a dynamic resolution scaler with a locked 30fps... In my opinion...
Will be fantastic, but taking care of the oldest of these games it's a shit on my opinion, RE4 Is a 2005 game that doesn't have exigent graphics at this time and runs like shit on switch at 900p docked mode and 600p portable mode, RE4 can easy run at 1080p locked 60 FPS on every new current console, and even the last gen consoles, but the lack of optimization is a shit, RE6 game of 2012, like Digital Foundry said on the video, runs at 1080p with FXAA locked 60 FPS on both Xbox one and PS4, while RE5 of 2009 is 1080p FXAA and the Framerate is shit because have a lot of judder on cutscenes and at the gameplay runs so bad, RE4 Is also 1080p and locked 60 FPS, but lacks of AA that is a shit because is a 2005 game, and they don't fixed the lower resolution of Separate ways cutscenes

Why?
in other words, lazy port cash grab.
That's what most of these Switch ports have been from Capcom. ANY multi game set they've made will have only one game on the cart, while the other game is locked behind a single use digital download code. And of course the game with the smaller file size is the one on the cart every time. Capcom has been ridiculously lazy in their Switch efforts so many times now, I'm getting sick of it. Not everything they've made on Switch is bad, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is fantastic actually, but any multigame set outside of the Street Fighter collection seems to have one game, or one set of games (MegaMan collections) on the cart with the other download only. It has just been ticking me off. I'll pay more if it means they'll stop their nonsense and fix these cheap lazy port jobs for the Switch.
@@1chiTheKiller It's funny when you consider that two super niche titles, Gal Gun 2 and Gun Gun Pixies, were relesed physically. Yet, Capcom can't release RE5 and RE6 physically, games which will most likely sell better. The only defense I can find for them is that RE5 and RE6 are large games (around 18GB each), so it might have been too costly to mass produce them on cards. This also explains why RE4 is on the card while RE5 and RE6 are digital only - RE4 is much smaller and therefore requires a smaller sized card.
Vatch I love capcom to death but I’m not surprised and by this point would expect no less from them.

Also, there's always time for an update to fix these issues.
You are suprised? Witcher 3, a 2015 current gen game runs better than these shitty RE ports!
Does anyone know if the campaign coop can be played with 2 switches via local wireless?
The graphic looks great. Some of the things that I love from 5 are the graphics and the setting. It reminds me a little of Southern Gothic setting, in contrast to RE4 Gothic setting.
Like, why even do the ports if you can't get them to at least a solid 30? That's really frustrating.
It's just a cash grab, they think they can milk the Switch while it's selling like hot cakes.
@@UrdnotWrex88 Because they can. Switch owners have low expectations.
No real optimization was made.
Good to see that the switch gets so many fresh and new games.
Still gonna buy it. Been wanting to play this portable
Capcom should have picked the 360 version and make that one 60FPS on the switch . Much better. Instead of downgrading the PS4 version.
Doesn’t work like that kid
@@misaeltoral508 what?
@@misaeltoral508 So tell us how it works genius
ok capcom is just making the switch look bad. its 2019, these games came out several yrs ago, theres no reason why a 2017 console can't run both these games without any issue. actually these game should run BETTER on the switch.
@Mr. Flash way better than xbox 360/ps3. the switch is more than two times as powerful, has 8 times more ram and more modern hardware. resident evil revelations 2 looks and runs amazing on switch. resident evil 4 was already really bad on switch and that was running amazing on a gamecube. capcom is just way to lazy.
@Mr. Flash better than the original versions, obviously.
It’s crazy how his frame rates are so much lower than when I played the demo on my Switch.
Can’t wait for this game on Switch
What's up with the motion blur love I personally hate it.
Same, if I'm given the option I always turn motion blur off. I had to quit playing Horizon Zero Dawn because the motion blur was making me sick, glad that got fixed.
Absolutely agree, motion blur is the most useless effect ever.
This. Motion blur is the dumbest shit ive ever seen in gaming. Why would you ever want to have the screen blur when you are moving or aiming in a first/third person shooter?
they do that to cheat FPS on games.
Well they were talking about "Per object motion blur" not the fullscreen one
I miss the MT framework engine....it could run on anything
It was awesome
Anyone else have audio problems in both demos? I mean voice and sound effects playing very quietly or not at all. I'm new to RE and i was playing these to see if i had interest. Because of this though I'm skeptical.
0:56 How many times have we've had a video start off like this? The precedence makes it obvious where this is heading.
