It's difficult to articulate just how bad the audio is in this version, it's worse than some PS1 games for christ sake. I've extracted the audio from the cart and looked at it with foobar and it's compressed using FMOD at 16khz sample rate. 16 bloody khz, that's just insane. Some of the music tracks, especially the asylum demon/taurus demon bossfight track sound comically bad. Yet the PC version's 41khz mp3s sound pristine. Looking at it with a spectrograph shows an extremely sharp drop in volume with anything over 8khz, down to like -9db. It's just terrible stuff. Might be the worst sounding game I've heard in about 10 years.
Yeah. Everything this video demonstrates makes sense and was to be expected, except for this. Sound quality has virtually nothing to do with performance, and I bet the compression they did saved but a few dozens mb (if that).

Yea people are too fixed on resolution count. The og game looked and ran worse and yet people got over it quickly. The Switch at least has a reason to exist over the Xbox One and PS4.
It's funny how people are forgetting that Switch is first and foremost a handheld console and that handheld consoles have historically being one or two gens behind in power ever since the Gameboy. It's a "hybrid" system but at its core is factually a handheld that requires an add-on to play on a TV.
@Peter Connell it is marketed as such but is still technically a handheld - after all, all the hardware is inside the "portable" itself, the system uses mobile Tegra hardware (ARM tech) for low power consumption and effeciency and has a form factor small enough to fit in your hand. You still gonna tell me it's not a handheld? Ok
??? Nintendo themselves has said the that although the portable and docked modes are used almost equally in most households, it is primarily a home console. Nintendo's idea of a handheld would be the 3DS.
If im not mistaken, DS3 is 30FPS, so i dont mind DS1 being 30 fps. And to be able to fight bosses in the bus or breaks is a really nice plus. My real annoyance is the controls of A and B being reversed. It confuses me a lot for the reasons mentioned by DF.
I wonder what's up with the audio quality. It sounds as if it was re-recorded in a lower quality mic. I'd guess compression but that doesn't match the file size... it's not a deal breaker but hope it gets patched.
I prefer the original lighting of the game,it fits the artistic design,I own the PS4 version and played it on my pro, taking a 7-8 year old game and putting in different graphical effects that it wasn't designed for can make a game look worse, even the light your character generates to add atmosphere is nerfed to shit on the other systems
I personally have put hundreds & hundreds of hours across all platforms and did not like the remastered on PS4 & Xbox one and since playing it on my Switch it is how I remembered on PS3 & 360 which I prefer and doesn’t look plastic like on PS4 & XB1 ... that’s just my opinion.
i also prefer the look of the original, the improvments of the other versions, in this case, the lighting changes, is something i hate, armors look dull in comparison with the original. This is why i waited the switch version, instead of getting it on pc or ps4
te11ta1eheart Waited for the switch version, because I played the network test on Xbox One.. The world did look nice, but the armour was dull and flat.. Currently playing the switch version and it feels like how I remembered.. Without such severe frame drops and the portability is just the cherry on top.. ^^
I got this a few years back on PC and put in so much time on it. However I never beat it. I quit playing for a while and eventually they announced the Switch version so I decided to stop playing my PC version and wait for it on Switch. It's not perfect (and not 60fps) but it still runs great. Barely notice frame drops (although I know it happens slightly from time to time), and it looks just as good as my PC version did, without the goofy bad porting issues the original PC version had. I love it, and I'll be finishing this game finally on my Switch. :)
Really I think there's a lot of trade offs going on between the Switch version and the Xbox ONE/PS4/PC versions, and how you view it depends on your personal opinions. On one hand, yes the PS4/Xbox ONE/PC versions have moving grass/leaves and new fog textures and so on. But the lighting seems off (at least it does to me), the texture on the Knight Helmet on PS4 (shown in a side by side in this video with the Switch version) looks awful if you ask me, and over all the Remastered version on other consoles just doesn't seem to carry the same charm as the original versions. Then you have that the Switch version is portable, to some this is a huge draw for the game. Personally, I like the way the Switch version looks. It retains much of the charm/lighting/tone/atmosphere of the original yet cleans it up just enough to improve the experience. Meanwhile the other versions of Dark Souls Remastered completely lose that charm, change the lighting effects making it look odd, and down grading some of the detail in things like the Knight Helmet to make it look more "smooth". I'd much rather have a portable version of the original release than something that makes tons of changes. Do I wish we got moving leaves on Switch? Eh, I guess it would be nice, but it's not a make or break for me. This is one of my top 5 favorite games, so for me taking this on the go and retaining much of what I loved about the original is never a bad thing in my opinion. But I can definitely see why some people would want the other versions.
Ironically nexusmods has a HQ audio pack for the switch version, which you can easily just copy paste onto your SD card in the respective folder if you have a switch that's hacked. It's only like 750 MB too.
To anyone who plays on Switch on docked mode, I highly recommend getting a pro controller. I played through the whole game with the Joy Cons, which are a little too tiny for my big ape hands to begin with, but when they start to *drift* then it's an extra layer of difficulty.
I had a strong feeling when I bought the game on switch that I should not play with my joy cons because this game is taxing. Mainly play in handheld but I’m already actively trying to get more joycons just in case drift occurs after a while. Good to know that you’ve already lived through it and recommend getting a pro! Thanks for the heads up, might borrow my friends pro controller now! :)
I’m disappointed at the switch version. I don’t care much of the red or frames but my oh my does the audio and lack of response time make the game not enjoyable. Most of my deaths result in me having to struggle to move with the controller.
I can’t be the only one who didn’t notice the sound issues. I even had someone over to play it who has sank 200 hours in the 360 version and they never even noticed it. It’s obvious when playing back to back but it’s hardly distracting in game
Dark Souls Remastered for Switch in a nutshell: - This is actually not Dark Souls Remastered, but a port of the Xbox 360 version of Dark Souls. - While resolution and performance are better now, the special effects and sound quality are downgraded. - Overall performance is better, but there are still frame rate drops and the game still has inconsistant frame pacing. This "remaster" is really disappointing when it comes to graphics, performance and sound. The graphics should have been better, the sound quality should have been the same and the performance should have been a locked 30 FPS without frame pacing issues. This release is beyond lazy. Shame on you, Bandai Namco.
You can say that for every DS Remastered port, nothing new. At least you had the ignorance to say that it's Bandai Namco and not QLOC. Not a lot of people can read these days. Will keep me amused for a while.
When the remaster came out, people complained that it changed the artstyle too much and that it looked worse than the original game despite the more advanced shaders. Now the Switch version looks essentially identical to the last-gen version, and people are saying that they wanted it to look like the remaster? Even though they hated the remaster?
I sincerely doubt they care that much tbh. I think they already have an idea of how this should sell on a Ninte do platform and gave it the exact amount of attention as per their projected sales. BN feels no shame in their game.Another port knocked out, another set of coins grabbed, moving on.
love this on my switch, I had no idea this came out until this year in May. I have been playing an hour or so on the go a day. So worth it if anyone has a switch and loves DS
I am really impressed by the Switch, the ability to play games like this on the go, while driving car and having a bottle of Scotch at the same time, it is taxing on my own CPU.
Having missed this gem on last-gen, me and my friends got this game for switch. To play this game with friends is just glorious. Would recommend it to anyone with a switch. Must buy
I just don't understand the compressed audio. Even if the game was 7 gb it could still fit on a cartridge easily. Maybe they did it to save from having to buy more expensive cartridges though, quite the bummer.
The switch version isn't the graphically superior version by any means, but they nailed it when it comes to seamlessly switching from console to handheld . The slightly lower handheld resolution of 720p looks about the same on the smaller screen and the frame rate is a solid 30 fps so it feels the same as the console . Very well done .

Would it be possible to get 2 on the Switch? I always felt 2 didnt really do a lot with shadow but idk how taxing those effects are on game design and all that.
Good stuff. I'm glad handhelds are getting so good looking. It brings me back to being a kid and always wanting open worlds and such in the palm of my hand. But in reality what made me enjoy handhelds and their limited graphics was the imagination filling the rest in. This inbetween is impressive, but it ends up leaving me feeling disappointed and uninterested.
It really is and that's a dealbreaker for me, dark souls should NOT sound like a 240p youtube video but hey, bandai namco are cheap and wanted this on a 4 gig cart so..compre....wait no this isn't even compression, this is just throwing all the sounds into audacity and lowering the sample rate a bitcrushing them to hell in order to make them smaller
@@Draggobuttboi Its not even a compression thing or wanting o get them smaller. Its practically the same game as the 360 version with the same file size. I want to.know how its possible that the quality got compromised for the same game at the same size.
Something I have noticed in a lot of Switch games is that the system seems to always struggle with any sort of alpha effects close up on screen. Back when you guys covered Mario+Rabbids one of the few places it dropped frames was with some alpha effects. I've been playing World of Final Fantasy on Switch and throughout the entire game it was playing at a consistent 30fps, but in a specific cutscene with alpha effects up close it dropped frames. And here in Dark Souls the same issue persists. Are these effects really all that taxing? Some insight would be appreciated.
You complained about lens flare? Come on guys.. I personally think lens flare is shit i dont want to be reminded im actually a camera following a person.. Honestly this port or remaster on the switch i would be fine with it just wish the switch had a better internal gpu like it would be great if they made a new switch that was slightly better performance wise so we had less of this dynamic resolution bs while docked. Nintendo do have some fantastic looking games and the visuals just get ruined a lot of the time imo one of the main reasons why i like having emulators. They tend to clear up the image and make it look better. I know games arent all about graphics but lets face it, graphics going crappy quality and pixelated is an eyesore and it makes it harder to enjoy the games art. Windwaker and its HD version is a good example
what a great analysis, really gotta call it “The review I’d want” for this release...as all the rest of the game content we already know, that is all I wanted to know and more
The paired back alpha effects make sense. The 360 and ps3 versions would chug whenever fire effects were on-screen. I recall the battle with siff running at like 15fps at points. I'd say it's more of an optimization than a downgrade
I feel like like they may have been able to crank more out of it, especially those fire effects on the boss, and the dragon? Didn't seem like the normal textures would make it drop that much, but what do I know? it looks like a solid port. Might be a fun game to pick up when I get my switch. I have never played the first Dark Souls anyway.
The reason I love Switch version more there’s one extra feature that all other versions don’t have is amiibo support and has it’s very own amiibo figure
Given that the remaster didn’t really add much of anything in terms of visuals, since it pretty much just looks like the original but upscaled on a PC for PS4 and Xbox, Switch is a great look. Just wished the audio wouldn’t have changed and maybe just maybe hit 60fps
@@DrDoomFate but digital foundry meant it in a positive way xD Not negative. Because of how terrible the remaster looks on the other system with that lightning that makes everything look like it was made out of plastic. The most important points are fixed: resolution & framerate. also the textures got a big overhaul.
Is the audio really so bad it’s game breaking? I want this game but if the audio is a deal breaker then I’m not keen. My other concern is whether or not online play is any good on the switch, not in terms of performance but whether or not people will actually play this.
@DigitalFoundry - I have a great suggestion for one of your upcoming videos, and that is Warframe. This game is already on PC, Ps4 and Xbox one, soon Nintendo Switch and is continuously being updated. It would be interesting to see you guys break it down on all the available platforms, including the X and Pro consoles as well of course. Even on console there's a bit of settings to tweak, and I think you guys at digital foundry will enjoy breaking it down. Anyone agree? Please upvote
QUESTION : Does the Switch had a socket for a mains power adaptor in portable mode ? It just crossed my mind that would removed the issue with needing to preserve battery life - while allowing you to say curl up in another room or in bed with it in handheld mode, or if you wanted to say "Level Grind" while watching something on the Television. Can anyone answer this question ?
The Switch will run off a power adapter in portable, but will still handle it as "Portable" mode, not docked. It may get too hot to hold otherwise, but that's just my guess for why they did it this way.
Yeah I know, seriously some of these Sony Soy boys have the persistence to somehow reply to every single damn Pro Nintendo comment here. People say PC gamers are toxic, but seriously Sony fan boys are worse.
I was on the fence whether I should get this version or the PS4, I ended up buying both on a sale and honestly I'm not disappointed, the game runs really well and looks amazing on the Switch's small screen, I'm not sure whether they fixed the audio compression issue or if I simply didn't notice it tho
The fact that this doesn't have the terrible "remastered" visuals is actually it's biggest selling point. Seeing as they took the original Dark Souls off the Steam store, this is now the best way to experience the game out of all the options currently on the market.
I`m starting to see why there was no BC X Enhanced support for this title.. It would have produced near similar results to the remaster, along with being free.
Alpha transparencies seem to be Switchs achilles heel. Probably a big 0oblem for Japanese devs. I think Bayonetta had the same kinds of.problems and that's probably gonna make something like Dark Souls 3 really difficult to.port.
Good job you guys. Good job From Software or whoever did this remaster. A game thats third party that i can actually see myself play on Switch with out cringing from the subpar quality.
For that key mapping, DualShock 4 Japanese version is using the same mapping as Switch pro. Right is O while Down is X. Personally speaking, I really don't like the Xbox Down A Right B layout as it's really screwing things when switching from consoles to PC.
Glad to see this video, but why didn't we get a Wolfenstein switch 1.2 patch analysis? I saw a comparison video on UA-cam, and the difference was actually pretty huge.
I lost a year to this game when it first came out but I gained so many good memories pick it up if you've never played. But be prepared the challenge is addictive.
I like the switch lighting for sure! I love how dark it is and that's funny comming from me with the brightness all the way up because of how bad my eyes are
4:40 goes to show how much they messed up the ps4 remaster :( In my opinion, It's better that the switch version is the same as the original but an upscaled version.
You guys went above & beyond trying to justify the audio compression. It is completely unacceptable, and was a boneheaded choice by Namco. People that bought the physical version that came on an 8GB gamecard that was about half empty got screwed in particular. Publishers going out of their way to overly appease gamers that go download-only are shooting themselves in the foot, if you go download-only you can logically expect to need a sizable memory card. Not only did Namco choose to piss all over people that bought physical, AND people that choose DL only and make sure to have a decent memory card; but the experience is neutered for EVERYONE because of it. The complaints from a few entitled people that are strictly download-only and refuse to buy a good memory card would be way less than the complaints from everyone else. There is an easy fix for this, and hopefully they do it though: Just release a free optional DLC patch on the eShop with the full audio.
Is it seriously on a 8 GB card? That makes this whole thing even dumber, i thought they compressed the audio so they can squeeze it on a 4 GB cardridge. If this is true, then they wasted money on manufacturing and made an overall worse game in the process, it can't get dumber than that.
Realy ggod resolved to run on a portable device! But I hope they patching in a option to change the menu button layout (reverse A and B again). It is so confusing every time you start the game after a break.
Was the footage purposely slowed down in places? I don't remember the 360 version ever running that poorly. OK yeah, seeing that PS4 footage, it has to be slowed down on purpose for this video.
please tell me you can change the control settings… I really wish they didn't mess with the controls, that's going to be so confusing unless you can customize it properly!
Just the fact that I can play an originally X360/PS3 game on a handheld blows my mind. In a few more years mobile hardware will be strong enough to ensure full-blown emulation of PS2/PS3/360 games on a handheld. And it will be freaking glorious!
Here I was thinking that they would be a less visually pleasing version of the remaster but I have pleasantly been proven wrong. I’m excited to play the original Dark Souls on my Switch.
SHIN BAKI HANMA Dark Souls is hardly overrated, overrated would imply that it gets more praise than it deserves, when looking at the objective quality of the product it is a flawed masterpiece, and FromSoft had nothing to do with the port, it was handled by Bandai who outsourced the job to other devs

OH WOW. The fire effects are terrible on the switch! What happened????
Omg this is garbage. It isnt running in native 12k at 1400 fps. I will pass thank you.
Teroskull Tell me this is a joke.

Or you're just trash
Colin Hendershott did you just call me Tubby?
Nobody calls me Tubby!!!
First complaint is valid. Second complaint is just a git gud. I've played this game with a non-functioning R-stick, and it holds.
@@blackbomber72 I’ve completed this series multiple times and even gave it to my nephew I think op is referring to joycon drift?
I can’t be the only one who didn’t notice the sound issues. I even had someone over to play it who has sank 200 hours in the 360 version and they never even noticed it. It’s obvious when playing back to back but it’s hardly distracting in game
Dark Souls Remastered for Switch in a nutshell:
- This is actually not Dark Souls Remastered, but a port of the Xbox 360 version of Dark Souls.
It will be a failure anyway, Why release a game like Dark Souls on a childrens console
I sincerely doubt they care that much tbh. I think they already have an idea of how this should sell on a Ninte do platform and gave it the exact amount of attention as per their projected sales. BN feels no shame in their game.Another port knocked out, another set of coins grabbed, moving on.
Im just happy to play one of my all time favorite games on the go! And glad its higher res'd than the 360.
love this on my switch, I had no idea this came out until this year in May. I have been playing an hour or so on the go a day. So worth it if anyone has a switch and loves DS
I am really impressed by the Switch, the ability to play games like this on the go, while driving car and having a bottle of Scotch at the same time, it is taxing on my own CPU.
I love playing this on my lunch break at work. I can’t believe the other two aren’t on switch yet.
@@snake2106well it's not as cool as your grandpa box . you can read the emails so good . play your games on a board bigger than screen that doesn't control for shit . I'd rather read a fucking book dude .

This is an amazing experience on the switch
I have this game for my Switch and PS5 (so same as PS4 PRO settings) and I didn't notice any big difference. Amazing game on the Switch and portable!
Would it be possible to get 2 on the Switch? I always felt 2 didnt really do a lot with shadow but idk how taxing those effects are on game design and all that.
2 and 3 can be ported but nobody's gonna do it😢
Audio and sounds are horribles!!!
The video and graphics are horribles!!!!
That's due to the rather weak gpu and poor bandwidth.
It is an effect that is meant to be there and sad when it is just absent for some strange reason.
what a great analysis, really gotta call it “The review I’d want” for this release...as all the rest of the game content we already know, that is all I wanted to know and more
The paired back alpha effects make sense. The 360 and ps3 versions would chug whenever fire effects were on-screen.
I recall the battle with siff running at like 15fps at points. I'd say it's more of an optimization than a downgrade
Btw, 4 years later, it's "pared back" not "paired back" :)
new game for the 4th time, 70 hours in.. and get a boar helmet and black knight sword.. this game is truly masterpiece
Well sound doesn't bother me much and it looks fine in my opinion. I bought this version so I can play it on the go and it accomplishes that nicely.
Given that the remaster didn’t really add much of anything in terms of visuals, since it pretty much just looks like the original but upscaled on a PC for PS4 and Xbox, Switch is a great look. Just wished the audio wouldn’t have changed and maybe just maybe hit 60fps
Ok listening to the audio it sounds like it’s coming out of my 3DS wow
So this is Xbox 360/PS3 version and not the true remastered PS4/PC and Xbox one version. Thanks DF
I think it was known
Hahahahahahaha "to tell us the truth"

This guys are very funny xD
When you have other websites like IGN lying about this being a true remastered. I respect Digital Foundry to keep it honest.

Great vid, thanks. I wish you had shown us Blight Town though
The fact that this doesn't have the terrible "remastered" visuals is actually it's biggest selling point. Seeing as they took the original Dark Souls off the Steam store, this is now the best way to experience the game out of all the options currently on the market.
No it isn't lol...some different lighting does not make up for worse resolution and 30fps ... 60fps alone is a reason to get it on the other platforms

I like the switch lighting for sure! I love how dark it is and that's funny comming from me with the brightness all the way up because of how bad my eyes are
It's ironic that the NS port is the only one that stays faithful to the original aesthetics.
4:40 goes to show how much they messed up the ps4 remaster :(
In my opinion, It's better that the switch version is the same as the original but an upscaled version.
They just made the helmet silver looking instead of iron looking? What's wrong with that
@Skungi then why do you still see scratches?
Soo.... Original lighting which is good!
But shitty audio with no option to download a patch....
Was the footage purposely slowed down in places? I don't remember the 360 version ever running that poorly.
OK yeah, seeing that PS4 footage, it has to be slowed down on purpose for this video.
the comment section to these videos are always toxic.

please tell me you can change the control settings… I really wish they didn't mess with the controls, that's going to be so confusing unless you can customize it properly!
Switch is Ps3 on steroids power wise.
Honestly the visual on switch for the original faithfulness is perfect besides alpha fx
4:49 The Switch version looks remarkably better here than the PS4 version.

Gonna be picking it up soon, which I'm anticipating if I'm honest.. ^^

How did they capture video in portable mode? That doesn't look like a direct camera shoot.
