My dad was saved at Costa Mesa and I worked at Applegate Christian Fellowship. One word of caution is that Brian Broderson does not accurately reflect all Calvary Pastors. Chuck wrote a book called Calvary Distinctive’s which clearly outline what makes Calvary Chapel. I have never known ANY Calvary Pastor to be “soft-complementarian”. Whatever that is. You either meet the qualifications for Elder or you don’t.

I’m so grateful for Calvary Chapel. My husband grew up in CC San Jose and grew as a new Christian at a Calvary in NC. Unfortunately, that ruined him for every other type of church. 😆 All he wants is an Acts type church that preaches verse by verse, which are not very common.

Chapter by chapter through the Bible, God's Word is the BEAUTIFUL part of Calvary Chapel. The ugly part is their heretical Revelation dispensational view, which is sad, I was taught at Calvary to interpret Scripture with Scripture. When you interpret Scripture with Scripture you plainly see that today's popular Revelation view, which by the way only started in 1830, is very bogus. I started as a child in Foursquare Gospel. I attended Costa Mesa with my hippy dad on a visit to Socal. I stayed in Calvary Chapels for years and years. CC joined a list of significant events/influences in my life. Today I look at CC/Jesus Movement in a vastly different light. There will always be a sense of nostalgia. But when I grew older I came to see the Moses Model for what it was. Destruction.
The MM likely contributed to the loss of faith for many. If I was to select something from Scripture, that reminds me of this era, I pick Gideon. Early youthful victory, turned to death decades later. Gideon was listed in Hebrews as a man of faith. But he introduced worship of the ephod, and his family came to ruin after his passing.

Not nonsensical, near self-hypnotic utterances that had to be “interpreted” by another “gifted Member.” This is for what purpose? To put down those persons who were not “gifted?”

Gary, I suppose that sounds sort of right. But Calvary Chapel goes chapter by chapter straight through the Bible, God's Word. Baptist's typically jump around. Calvary Chapel does not use their spiritual gifts in "church" services like an Assembly of God does. I believe that is why Vineyard began, over a disagreement with the use of the spiritual gifts. Unfortunately Baptists and Calvary both have been sucked into the heretical dispensational Revelation teaching. But in their defense, 90 percent of today's church has been sucked into this false doctrine that oddly enough only started in 1830 by darby, then schofield with his famous study Bible in 1900, then of course hal lindsey and tim lahaye etc. Today's church doesn't really have much choice on their Revelation view in the sense that the majority of Bible colleges in the United States will not allow you to teach at their college unless you adhere to the dispensational Revelation view, pretty sad. @@zerosparky9510 I now look at Lonnie as co-founder of both CC and Vineyard. Wimbler would have to have known for years about Lonnie. Nothing could have happened without Lonnie. But, it drove me crazy listening to Lonnie recordings. He did not have a detailed methodical mind. It was tough to piece together narratives and timelines.
This I believe. Lonnie possessed a spirit. It was real. Others wanted it, and to harness the power. They weren't really excited about Lonnie, and where afraid he might melt down, or get out of control. Lonnie lead a tragic life.

Calvary Chapel was guilty of several serious problems in the 1990's*: cult like pastor-worship, mental abuse of anyone who didn't agree, an absurd dependency on Chuck Smith's line by line** method (King James only to boot), and a general lukewarm attitude toward the Holy Spirit--midway between Charismatic and Cessationist, that no man's land on noncommittal doctrine. Many churches were planted in college areas so that attendees would be unschooled and easy to bring in.
For the longest time, they claimed to not be a denomination, yet even had a logo, a dove. They maintain a website to this day, and have more qualifications of a denomination than many other groups of synods, conventions, and loose forms of hierarchy. This is just disingenuous.
Today, one can find Jack Hibbs hosting top level conservative political pundits to amens galore in the comments section, and Rob McCoy's patriot-pastor flag wrapped preaching. None of this is seen as out of bounds. Is it encouraged? It's certainly slanted and not specifically New Testament teaching.
Finally, everyone should at least know the basics of the Lonnie Frisbee story, how he influenced Chuck Smith early on, how there was a schism between Chuck and the other more Holy Spirit oriented leaders including John Wimber, founder of the Vineyard movement which spread to England, and Lonnie, who was apparently gay. It seems Chuck washed his hands of Lonnie, who died of AIDS in 1993. There were numerous testimonies of miracles and supernatural signs during Frisbee's ministry, which are not talked about anymore.
*In the early days of the internet there were many exposés of Calvary Chapel, but these have died out and are replaced by nothing but glowing praise. Amen, if praise be worthy.
**scriptural? oh yeah, but not in the way you might think:
"Whom is he trying to teach? To whom is he explaining his message? To infants just weaned from milk? To babies removed from the breast? For it is precept on precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little" (Isaiah 28:10). (The KJV fails to capture the sarcastic tone of this verse, but most other translations have it.)
For anyone who wants 200 plus hours of Chuck Smith going through the King James Version at a snail's pace, it's on UA-cam.

Too long CC has controlled this narrative.

calvary chapel was birthed out of a violation of biblical precept! carful study of biblical new testament church, clearly shows that if some one went to a new geographical area they became a part of the existing church in that area. they did not start their own local assembly. notice jesus addressed 7 churches. not 37 diffrent churches in the same geographical area. it was one church in one geographical area. the reason people go to a new area and start a new church more often than not is they are not allowed to promote their brand or new sect of the christian faith with in the local assembly they left. notice paul when he visited jeruselem, he did not start a new church or local assembly he yeilded to peter and served under him. the only examples of any one going to a new area and starting a local church was if there was NOT one there already. the practice of people comming to a new geographical area to them and starting a new church has brought in much error and devisivness and divisions among the body, sectarianisim is what it is. the apostle paul strictly forbid that. if the root is wrong one must aske what else is wrong. things like this has alowed for and fed the rise in false prophets and false teachers. notice, out of the mouth speaks the heart. "calvary chapel movement" this is a movement of a sect promoting their brand of the faith. not a move of the spirit.
