Growing up in Southern California, my family attended Calvary Chapel in Laguna Beach in the early 70's. We were definitely a hippie family! Us girls wore long, straight hair and flowered skirts, and my dad had long hair which he tied back in a ponytail and he wore John Lennon glasses! I gave my life to Jesus and was baptized at age 11 in the Pacific Ocean.
At our Calvary Chapel, we held services in a shed-like barn, sat on straw bales, with music consisting of acoustic guitars and our voices. We thought nothing of the young, hippie mamas sitting on those bales, praising Jesus and nursing their babies!
    Such beautiful memories...🩷
    Such an awesome movement...✝️☝️

I worked for Chuck as a youth pastor for 4 years. I was the high school pastor when Brian was the Jr. High pastor. I loved working for Chuck, but he could be intimidating. He always treated me well, but he was such a strong personality. One of my favorite stories was once Chuck was going to introduce me to pray and he forgot my name, and he got it, then I want up to the pulpit to pray and said, "thanks Bob." Everyone laughed, but Chuck was never one to let that go and he walked up behind me and said, "I'm getting old, what's your excuse?" Everyone laughed again. When Chuck, started to preach we would all go to the back of the church and Romaine said, don't mess with Chuck, cuz he will always get the last word! Haha. I admired Chuck so much and one thing he did that I never saw another pastor do. He would always stay and talk to everyone who wanted to talk with him after church. One last thing, you said he was athletic and that is way understating it. I have never seen anyone pitch underhand fast pitch as well. I would never even try to play tennis with him and he could waterski barefoot! Thank you for sharing these family stories.

This is all from my time. My parents had a home in corona. When Pastor Chuck started that church we all wanted to go there but none of us knew exactly where it was. Then Greg Laurie opened Calvary in Riverside just minutes away for us. The old sanctuary was on a little hill, small but every service was jamb packed people standing outside. We went in one Sunday and found exactly what we were longing for. We heard Pastor Chuck preach many times, we’ve been to baptisms at pirates cove. We were baptized at Lake Perris. We were all on fire for Jesus.

When I saw the baptism scene I cried because that memory came flooding back. We attended Calvary for a few years then the Lord changed their path to a new ministry.

At the end of the movie when they showed photos of your grandpa I was overwhelmed with emotion and I just thought well done good and faithful servant and how he finished strong. Tears rolling down my face realizing how much I miss him too! But even more seeing this movie and how pastor Chuck along with Kay were faithful and laid this foundation to be continued on to the generations! I was blessed to attend Calvary chapel, have my children go to MCA, and be part of a joyful life with Kay. I was also blessed to be on your grandparents tour bus in Israel in 1995. I will never forget the joy that beamed from his smile, and every time I would watch him teach I always felt that he knew something I didn’t. He knew Jesus in a way that was so intimate and I wanted to know more! Kay was so relatable it was so comforting. I miss them so much too! Thank you for sharing

I was a kid around 12 yrs old in 1970. I saw things beginning to happen spiritually in the Bay Area in 68 and 69 and got saved and baptized and started playing guitar in church. My parents were helping young people, hippies, get off drugs and get saved out of Haight Ashbury in SF, and Berkeley. I never attended Calvary Chapel per se, but was strongly influenced by how they taught the Bible and of course, the music. Later, I moved to SoCal, and began taking people to the Harvest Crusades and saw so many people get saved through that ministry which is an extension of Chuck Smith's ministry. Seeing the JR movie brought back many memories of my own, but also I thought, we can't live in the past. We can remember it but we can't recreate it. I believe God may use this platform to once again transform lives and actually make it easier for us to share the gospel, but ultimately God's message through Chuck Smith is that through Jesus, we can be set free from the law of sin and death -Romans 8:1!

Super thankful about your comment. I just love how God's work isn't confined to one location or one avenue of ministry. What a legacy you have as well. I am so thankful that we can look back at these remembrance "stones" to remind ourselves how God is ABLE. His heart and love and Word lives throughout all generations forever. Funny, history after sometime as the years were going on, my dad, who ran The Word for Today, talked to gramps again about doing concerts at Calvary as they weren't as predominate. Gramps loved the idea and scouted out Pacific Amphitheater for this very venue. He brought on a number of guys like Mike MacIntosh, Raul Reis, Don McClure, Jeff Johnson and Greg Laurie to speak at the first Harvest Festivals. Later on, Greg, as a gifted evangelist, took this on and continues through to this day. Yes, looking back is an encouragement to look forward at the power and love of God to reach every generations from this time forward and forever more. May God strengthen you for a wonderful voice for His Gospel to this generation. Blessings.

The first time I saw Chuck Smith preach, was in the big sanctuary, and I walked out on him, left unsaved.
One Sunday about 10 years after first being in the tent I gave my life to Jesus, and was baptized by my Pastor Chuck at Pirates cove.

I was at Bible School and the seed of the JR was just starting. Larry Norman's Upon this Rock was released and I knew that a new wave was coming. I started a music library introducing many of the Church group I attended could listen to this the breed of music., that had albums from Love Song, Barry McQuire, Silverwind Honey Tree Don Francisco, and so many more. In the 80's I started a Christian music only music store which stocked world wide Christian music and many titles that came out of the Calvary ministry. Two phrases that were spoken we need to keep a tag on are ... "the pain of sin" and the "need to return to the first love". Nice to hear the reflections in this video,

A wonderful program. Thank you so much. I heard Chuck Smith preach one time at Biltmore Bible Church in Phoenix about 50 years ago, and the main thing I remember about him is that he had the most likeable face I had ever seen. He seemed totally filled with goodness and joy. What he said had such great authority.

I absolutely loved Pastor Chuck & Kay. Anytime my travels took me near Costa Mesa, I’d try to go hear Pastor Chuck teach the word. He changed my life, pointed me to Jesus. I was blessed to get to know Chuck, he was such an encourager. I still have my Pastor Chuck Bible Study cassettes stored away, I now listen to his teachings online or my MP3 discs. I have the original series 2000 CD MP3 set Chuck gave me before they came out. I just ordered a few things from TWFT.
I loved Chuck, Kay, and I love you guys. You both have a beautiful spirit, God bless you, and the entire Smith family.

Thank you girls! I never met you but your Grandpa Chuck & Kay were like parents to me. Chuck particularly was like my 2nd Dad. I cannot say enough about Chuck. I went to the original CC Church. I remember it as a loving and filled church. Chuck was always loving and accepting of us all. I was very upset about the way he was portrayed in the Jesus Revolation movie. He was directly opposite of the way they showed him. I talked to your Aunt Jan an she said I would not like the first half, but the second half I would love. She was right. I see your Grandpa in both of you. You have his smiles and bubbly personality like Kay. I have tried to explain this to people and it is so hard to watch because I love him so very much. I just want to scream from the heavens that he was not a down and out preacher. He was a leader, and a Shepard in every way! He would come and visit my mother and minister to her as she was an invalid. I would come home from school and he would be there. That wonderful smile an a hug! He would see me sitting in the trees at the little chapel and scold me to get out! I would argue with him...and then giggle and get down and run up the aisle and sit on the floor. He would just giggle and shake his head at me and smile. He kept in touch over the years. He knew me at 12 yrs old and my husband at 13. When people would tell me " God has told me you are not to be with John" He smiled, and in his loving wisdom said " Has God told YOU that? God knows your number, Bettie. If he wants to tell you, he will. Until then, you may be John's living Bible. How would that look if you turned away? " He would stop whatever he was doing to give me a bear hug and ask how John was and what I was up to. He married us later. Church used to have an annual "Steak Fry & Potluck" in Irvine in those days. I gave your Grandma Kay a tambourine. Your Grandpa wasn't too happy with me as she didn't know how to play and it was noisy. I pointed my finger at him and said " Hey wait a minute Pappa Chuck! The Bible says to make a joyful NOISE unto the Lord. He just looked down, laughed, and shook his head at me. I won! " He cared and loved us all. I would see him at HB surfing. He was really great! "Shooting the Pier" was incredibly hard to do. You had to watch the set of waves just right and make it through the pilings of the pier without wiping out on the barnacles as they would slice you like ribbons. He could do it. We were baptized by Chuck at Pirates Cove in Corona. He dedicated all three of our sons and was a baby junkie. Kay would be always trying to feed us. I miss them so very much. You are right, Lonnie was indeed like a son to him, and I believe he was 18 yrs old then and left after about a year or so. They were not there when we were in the tent. Greg & Kathy's story mimics John & I's story too. They came along after we did but we all knew each other. Thank You for making this. Your Grandpa Chuck was the foundation and rock that Jesus used to bring the "Jesus movement" about. He was and always will be a cherished and loved Pastor to John & me and thousands of others. Keep telling the truth and God Bless you both.

Wow what a testamony = fills in a lot of gaps. When I returned from my tour of duty in Korea in '67 I had never even heard the word "hippy". I got a job working daily with one of the original members of Calvary. I believe they were meeting at a 7th Day Adventist church in Newport Beach. Later I attended the Greenville chapel. I still have some gaps, like Chuck Jr.

Thank you for this history. As an Aussie who has history in the Vineyard Movement, and have watched The Jesus Revolution, I would like to give a bit of perspective to Lonnie Frisbee: What is not widely known is that Lonnie had been repeatedly sexually abused by a baby sitter as a young boy which left an indelible imprint on his emotional and sexual life which sadly the church of the day was not able to minister freedom into. I believe that the spiritual legacy that Lonnie left behind is far greater than the attempts by the enemy to erase the work of the Holy Spirit in his life. Praise God for the blood of Jesus that is able to wash whiter than snow, and we will be able to meet Lonnie again in heaven.
