  • "Steamboat Bill" is a song sung by Arthur Collins in 1911. It was much loved and appeared in lots of popular media. There is a 1928 film named "Steamboat Bill Jr" that is named after the song, and the song is played in the famous 1928 cartoon "Steamboat Willie." Hope you enjoy.

You have to admire Arthur Collins' diction, it's usually not that easy to catch the lyrics from recordings this old.

not really- unless it's poorly recorded or a worn record, most recordings should be easy to interpret.

@@gunnarthefeisty I’ve heard the abrasive compounds put into the records breakdown and expand overtime causing a reduction in quality. Specifically sulfur. This would tie in since older records pre electrical era had more of these compounds.

for being recorded before electric microphones were in use, the quality is impressive

@@charliedavidson4925 I've never heard of that, but I know even with the compounds that wear the needle down, and replacing them, that they still wear the record after enough time, and it's usually more noticeable on acoustic ones cause they were recorded at a lower "volume" than electric ones.

That is insane. Time is such a weird thing. There were people alive at this time that could remember the Jackson administration and had potentially met people who knew George Washington. Also another interesting thing. Irving Berlin, one of the most prominent song writers of all time was born in 1888 and died in 1989. He lived through the era of March, Rag, Tin Pan Alley, Jazz, Rock n' Roll, 60s Psychedila, Soul, Funk, Disco, New Wave, Metal and the beginnings of Hip Hop. Sousa was the king of music at the beginning of his life and Nirvana's first album was released a couple months before his death. He would have been 22, a year older than I am, at the time of this video.

It was actually just a public domain song that they used because they couldn't afford a composer. Or rather, they _thought_ it was in the public domain. It actually wasn't. They used it in Steamboat Willie because the lyrics synced up with the premise of the episode, and the tune is catchy!

Down the Mississippi steamed the Whipporwill
Commanded by the pilot, Mister Steamboat Bill
The owners gave him orders on the strict Q.T.
To try to beat the record of the Robert E. Lee.
Just speed up your fire, let the old smoke roll
Burn up all your cargo if you run out of coal
"If we don't beat that record," Billy told the mate
"Then the Maiden Care'll beat us to the Golden Gate."
Oh, Steamboat Bill, steamin' down the Mississippi
Steamboat Bill, a mighty man was he
Oh, Steamboat Bill, steamin' down the Mississippi
Gonna beat the record of the Robert E. Lee.
Up then stepped a gambling man from Louisville
Who tried to get a bet against the Whippoorwill
Billy clasped the roll and surely was some bear
The boiler it exploded, blew them up in the air.
The gambler said to Billy as they left the wreck
"I don't know where we're going but we're neck and neck."
    Said Billy to the gambler, "Tell you what I'll do;
I'll bet another thousand I'll go higher than you!"
Steamboat Bill, he tore up the Mississippi
Steamboat Bill, the pilot made him swear
Steamboat Bill, he tore up the Mississippi
An explosion of the boiler put him up in the air!
The river's all in mourning now for Steamboat Bill
No more you'll hear the popping of the Whippoorwill
There's crepe on every steamboat that plows the stream
From Memphis right to Natchez, down to New Orleans.
The wife of Mister William was at home in bed
When she got the telegram that Steamboat's dead
Said she to the children, "Blessed Honey Lambs
The next papa that you have'll be a railroad man!"
Steamboat Bill, missing 'long the Mississippi
Steamboat Bill is with an angel band
Steamboat Bill, missing 'long the Mississippi
He's a fireman on a ferry in the Promised Land!
Steamboat Bill, missing 'long the Mississippi

    CHORUS NO. 1 :
    Dit Billy au joueur, "Dis-toi ce que je vais faire;
    CHORUS NO. 2 :
    CHORUS NO. 3 :

Down the Mississippi steamed the Whipporwill
Commanded by the pilot, Mister Steamboat Bill
The owners gave him orders on the strict Q.T.
To try to beat the record of the Robert E. Lee.
Just speed up your fire, let the old smoke roll
Burn up all your cargo if you run out of coal
"If we don't beat that record," Billy told the mate
"Then the Maiden Care'll beat us to the Golden Gate."
      CHORUS NO. 1:
Oh, Steamboat Bill, steamin' down the Mississippi
Steamboat Bill, a mighty man was he
Oh, Steamboat Bill, steamin' down the Mississippi
Gonna beat the record of the Robert E. Lee.
Up then stepped a gambling man from Louisville
Who tried to get a bet against the Whippoorwill
Billy clasped the roll and surely was some bear
The boiler it exploded, blew them up in the air.
The gambler said to Billy as they left the wreck
"I don't know where we're going but we're neck and neck."
      Said Billy to the gambler, "Tell you what I'll do;
I'll bet another thousand I'll go higher than you!"
      CHORUS NO. 2:
Oh, Steamboat Bill, he tore up the Mississippi
Oh, Steamboat Bill, the pilot made him swear
Oh, Steamboat Bill, he tore up the Mississippi
An explosion of the boiler put him up in the air!
The river's all in mourning now for Steamboat Bill
No more you'll hear the popping of the Whippoorwill
There's crepe on every steamboat that plows the stream
From Memphis right to Natchez, down to New Orleans.
The wife of Mister William was at home in bed
When she got the telegram that Steamboat's dead
Said she to the children, "Blessed Honey Lambs
The next papa that you have'll be a railroad man!"
      CHORUS NO. 3:
Oh, Steamboat Bill, missing 'long the Mississippi
Oh, Steamboat Bill is with an angel band
Oh, Steamboat Bill, missing 'long the Mississippi
He's a fireman on a ferry in the Promised Land!

2:14 I keep hearing "pilot" instead of "fireman"
Is this some weird misunderstanding or what?
