    This is so interesting because in Scandinavia there is this prejudice view (?) of the French being beautiful and thin but VERY unhealthy. Many of us have experienced a week in France as an exchange student and most found it so difficult because of the different way of eating. In Sweden where I'm from breakfast is seen as super important! Most people have porridge, boiled eggs or whole wheat bread for breakfast, quite a large portion. When I've been in France I've been so shocked to see how women often just eat a small chocolate biscuit or similar for breakfast. Same with lunch, often very small and not satisfying at all. On top of that it seems many French women smoke to help their appetite stay low. Even though I found the show Emily in Paris to be ridiculous I kind of felt that Emily's boss (who is constantly frowning at anyone eating anything) was quite what I experienced in France. Not wanting to critique you Lucie, just saying I am surprised my view of French peoples' eating habits seems so different. :o

      Living in Norway and visiting France I have to agree with you a lot! I also feel like Scandinavia is very open and excited about working out and hiking and stuff. Whereas I feel like in France it’s more about being “naturally thin” and not as fit… also the smoking is definitely unhealthy! Not as common in Scandinavia.

      maybe it's a parisian thing? I've been on exchange in France, but in Aquitaine, and stayed with a host family who would cook lunch and dinner, which often included dishes based on eggs, cheese or meat plus potatoes and other vegetables. It was very good but way too heavy for me. For breakfast (very early and before school) we would have cereal or toast. I did like the little entrées like a bit of cheese and bread before meals but all in all, I was never really able to finish my plate unfortunately. Your breakfast sounds really good though!

      It’s funny to see how people see us 😄😄 and to see that lots of people say we smoke a lot. I dont find that we smoke that much (i have never smoked) but it must be true because i see that a lot.

      Yeah, having been in France I have the same view as well. The French seem to prioritize thinness but pleasure too that's why you see them eat tiny amounts of pastry or caloric foods for breakfast and dinner when with the same calories they could eat something less tasty but more filling and nutritious.
      My view on Scandinavia and germanic countries in general ( except England and Finland because it's not germanic but it fits in the category) is that you eat protein heavy meals ( fatty fish, meat and eggs) and grains which makes for filling healthy meals and you are very into physical activity like hiking, cycling etc. So you tend to be thin but with emphasis on health rather than aesthetics. Whereas the French I feel are not really into physical activity they just walk a lot. So, I don't think that you're prejudiced. In comparison to your diet the French one is unhealthy. In comparison to the American diet, the french one is super health.
      And then you come to my country Greece which is majorly unhealthy despite having one of the healthiest diets in the world. We just eat a lot and our portions in restaurants resemble the American portions. And we don't exercise too. And we smoke like chimneys lol, more so than the French.

    Everything in moderation is a great rule for life. I notice quite a few people on social media doing "challenges." No alcohol for 30 days or twice daily workouts for 60 days, etc. But people quit after a few days. And binge after giving up on the challenge. Adapting the French way of life is definitely more my style. Keep the tips coming!

    Great video. I apply these general rules: center each meal around fruits and vegetables to gain fullness and satisfaction, with carbs and protein in lesser quantities. Apply the plate method for proper proportions (1/2 plate fruits and vegetables, 1/4 carbs, 1/4 lean protein), have 2 to 3 course meals for variety: 1- starter of crudités or salad or vegetable soup, 2- main dish of cooked veggies, an adequate portion of protein for your age and size (3-6 oz lean protein) with a combination of legumes (approximately, give or take 1/2 c beans, lentils, etc), and a small portion of (1/2-1 c rice, 1 slice of bread, 1/2 potato, etc.) carbs, fruit for dessert. Same for breakfast: more fruits, some carbs and protein. A lighter dinner of vegetables, some carbs and a bit of protein, more fruit. Fruits for snacks. Before you know it, you are having 10-12 servings of fruits and vegetables a day! To keep things interesting, I spend a little more on some special, in season fruits and vegetables than I do on meat in addition to always having and cooking with the basics: onion, carrot, celery, cabbage, standard fruits, and frozen veggies (broccoli, spinach, green beans, okra, etc) Oh and a piece of dark chocolate every now and then staves off the cravings for low quality candy bars. Having a pasta bowl, cupcake, pizza, burger on a fairly regular basis as part of this way of eating-as opposed to waiting until you reach your ideal weight (that day is like a mirage, always in the horizon!) to enjoy your favorites treats-will not cause you to gain weight and definitely not trigger any binges. Take pictures of your meals to have a log of all your tasty meals and keep them on instagram (mine is diet_for_foodies). Enjoy your meals, enjoy your life!

    Very nice video. The french eat fresh foods, eat in moderation, enjoy their meals and they don't eat all the time. Many of us do that here (USA) and we are healthy and normal weight. But I think here we have many foods are full of hormones and other contaminants that make us fatter, it is not only calories. I am editing to add something, some people here think that one of the reasons many french women are skinny because they smoke, What do you think of this?

    • @soomysaleem351
      @soomysaleem351 Рік тому

      @Lina 98 unfortunately numerous studies by leading universities and scientist have actually proven that certain foods that are fed hormones do in fact get digested by humans and affect their hormones. I'm actually providing some explanation here where there is evidence. Unfortunately saying something is so doesn't make it so. There has to be back up. I really advice you look into this. Saying that I AM from the UK where in my own experience we are more open about these sort of things Vs America. Forgive me if I am incorrect but I myself have actually researched AND discussed this with my drs and specialists and fellow friends and family who actually are scientists who study such subjects specifically 2 close friends who have explained to me in great detail the experiments and studies they have done for their thesis on the subject of affects of what is put in our food and whether or not it is digested in our system and absorbed and foes it impact us.
      I advice everyone not to make airy statements that are in FACT opinions and have no back up. I myself have actually got medical condition that is directly linked to hormones that were added in cows to produce more milk that has affected me severely and permanently.

    • @Edukalebylucie
      @Edukalebylucie  Рік тому +7

      Thank you! I think the hormones injected into food can definitely have an impact, which is why I tried to stay away from animal products when I lived in the US, or to find organic. As for pesticides, it's a complex issue but I agree with @Lina 98 that they are highly regulated + their effects are for very high doses, which you def don't get from food. For the smoking issue, yes people in France smoke more in general, but not as excessively as portrayed in the media, and I know so many people around me who are thin and don't smoke.

    interesting video. One of the first things i noticed when walking around in Paris, even in the more financial and commercial areas, was how few gyms i saw. I barely saw any. This might have changed as it was 10 years ago. however even at that time there was a gym or 2 on every street where i live.

    The thing is, most foreigners assume that French people eat macarons "all day long", or at least on a daily basis, and they're wrong - first, snacking is frowned upon, and most people actually eat a balanced diet including lots of vegetables and fruit. Pastries, cakes and other treats are eaten *occasionally* and things like bread, cheese, quiche, charcuterie and so on are eaten in moderation - again, balance is key...
    Having said that, of course there are exceptions, and just today I heard again on TV that almost half of the French population is in the obesity range... Personally, II've always struggled to eat a balanced diet, so I'm overweight.

    You show studies showing the French paradox but not why it’s there. While it’s good to eat consciously and have veggies with every meal and not get drunk on wine, it’s not why. The USA dumps vegetable oil on everything. Poly unsaturated fats create a lower BMR and damages the arteries. Something that sickens me is how many ingredients that are illegal in most countries are allowed in US foods. Americans are being poisoned

    The French Paradox is a paradox only if you refuse to accept that one of your core beliefs (saturated fat is bad) is just plain wrong. The French eat substantially more saturated fat than Americans. Guess what? Fat suppresses hunger, so you can eat smaller meals and not snack between meals. The French consume much less sugar (much much less high fructose corn syrup) and much less seed oil. They consume more whole foods and fewer highly processed foods. The reason Americans have more obesity, diabetes and heart disease is because for the last 50 years or so we have replaced the natural fats in our diet with sugars, seed oils and highly processed carbs.
