Pro-tip for milling hardened steel types, and cast iron for that matter;
Lower the RPMs. It'll cut the piece just as fast as if you did it with higher RPMs, but it won't heat the steel as much (so you don't risk ruining the temper) and your bits a *FAR* more likely to survive the process.
Seriously, when it comes to hardened steel, slower IS faster.

Agreed. when it comes to material with decent tensile strength, what matters is torque and bit strength. For more brittle material like aluminium; if you have the latter, you can forego the former.

As a machinist, I have to say, no matter how bad it is to film, using cutting oil while you work on the mill will save you time and money on the cutting tools. Also some chip guards to stop the chips from flying everywhere and piercing your feet could help.

As a gunsmith I have a small advice for increasing the pressure you get out of the blanks.Use a breach next time like in a falling or rolling Block rifle.

Some things I learned in my 700+ shop hours
2/3 flute for soft metals plastic
4 or more for anything harder
RIGIDITY! Don’t have tools sticking out more than they need.
Deflection can be fixed with spring passes sometimes.
Lube/coolant is cheap. Tooling is not.
Speeds and feeds are your friend.
If something is screaming it’s probably to fast if it’s a thud or chunking it’s too slow or maybe dull.
Tooling will make or break projects.
HSS is probably going to serve you well but if your feeling in need of more power a good carbide tool with serve you well.
Also I’d recommend using a spot drill or something to chamfer your edges. A sharp edge is more prone to damage (and to cut you)
Also remember to not wear your boots inside on your nice wood floor without pulling the chips out. Otherwise you’ll be feeling a sandal on the back of your head.

@@scootergrant8683 False. You're already putting a lot of strain on your leg bone just kicking a ball (footballers have broken their leg doing kicks) - and then on top of that you have a LARGE MASS accelerating due to the cartridges. UNLIKE a gun that accelerates some tiny mass.
@@dimitar4y If you ever shoot a firearm loaded with .22lr you'll find the recoil is about the same as an air rifle. The explosion of one blank would not be causing any injury to your foot.
Kinda hard to say how dangerous it would be. It might put a weird extra impact on your toes, foot and some of the ankle and knee ligaments, but it's hard to say if it could cause an injury or if you'd be just fine absorbing it. (Kicking is already a pretty weird movement to wrap your head around and some of this is going to depend on things like the weight of the steel block.)
I wouldn't compare it to a rifle as there the recoil is controlled and absorbed by a part of your body that is exceptionally good at taking on impacts from the direction the recoil is coming from. Hold the butt an inch away from you in the air or rest it anywhere else on your upper body and firing a 7.62 will cause some discomfort.

You should drill out the rods without o-rings and replace them with bigger ones that have some kind of (maybe copper?) o rings, definitely do at least two per rod. That way you'll get a better seal but also a bigger expansion chamber leading to a more efficient use of the potential energy delivered. That combined with a new firing pin mechanism that has a flat surface to hit against that the firing pins protrude out of to prevent the backblast will turn this thing into a catapult
Hey IDT, if you’re looking to make a mark 2, try looking into putting some sort of clasps on the side that lock the rear in place when it slams forward. Look at some rifle actions for inspiration, since it’s effectively the same principle

run your shotvac as you're milling to collect the fragments (unless it's sparking, cause that would blow up) and spray oil on it periodically when milling very hard material, also cobalt bit are best if you weren't already using them

Blacksmithing tip. When working with hot metal (like you'd be doing with a milling machine) its best to cool the metal every once in a while so you don't OVER heat it...keeps the Miller from breaking

Would LOVE to see a carbon firbre warhammer with internal skeleton, and mechanism in the head of the hammer, that switches explosive pellets after they are used. The pellets specialized to focus strenght of their explosion into close contact area in front of the hammerhead, and initialized by the push on the hammerhead striking surface. The point of said weapon would be use against locked door or thinner walls, and/or ultimate contact weapon against live force and lighter armour.
The milling cutter at 6:35 broke because u were using 4 bladed cutter. When youre milling something, where the hole is not all the way through you have to use 2 bladed milling cutter.
