I haul coal in Eastern KY. Pretty close bunch here to like he was saying. Everyone helps out when we break down. Which is fairly regular hauling 40-45 ton on a tandem and 55-65 on a dump trailer.
Funny how hardcore discovery channel and some truckers make the haul road out to be, I did it multiple times in my early 20s and one of the times I was drinking the entire time, its like driving on any other dirt road on the planet. People also do it on bicycles and motorcycles. The scenery is incredible though.
Donner is a smooth hard-surface road with support everywhere. It's a Federal Interstate system! Donner is nothing compared to the haul road. Once upon a time, it was maybe rough but not today. Just as well call the haul road a gravel/dirt road; that's what it is and it is not smooth. Also, the snows are not even close to similar. Yes, there is a difference in "snows." There is no such thing as 50F and 60F below zero on I-80 in California! There is no such thing as "wind" on I-80 in California going over Donner Pass; there is never any wind there; it's all trees! Get caught in a blizzard on the haul road, in complete darkness, zero visibility, 50F below zero (ACTUAL air temp), 60 mph winds, and you will be praying to God for Donner! At those numbers, the wind chill index will be over 100F below zero!
Majority of people and truckers don't want to be in California no matter how you make it look like a glamorous place to be. You can keep it to yourself....lol.

Looks like KW’s are the most popular trucks up there.

The same reason only idiots drive Volvos there... it's all junk! That road is no place for a plastic truck!
