HOW TO LEARN YOUR SCALES 10x FASTER (and WAY more useable)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лип 2018
- In this lesson I'm going to show you how to learn your scales 10x faster...
In fact, I'm going to show you 5 specific tricks to help you start visualising your scales over the entire neck - in an easy and systematic way.
Now, don't get me wrong... I know you might be thinking "scales... boring!"... but bear with me...
When it comes to understanding harmony in a much deeper way they're a HUGE piece of the puzzle, and if you ignore that, you're doing your bass playing and musicianship a crazy disservice.
Plus... if you learn them and start using them in the correct way (which I'm going to show you how to in this new lesson!)...
They can be transformative!
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

Welcom home 🏡
No wayyy! Welcome to the family!
Same here
Bass & drums BFF!!!
I love how this 10 minute video has given me months of material to practice.
Love Billy Sheehan. Thank you Scott for mentioning him in this video. As an LA (local 47) Trombonist (mostly Jazz) I have been fortunate to have gigged with some great bassists (Carol Kaye, Brian Bromnerg etc) and went to school with Jay Anderson. As well as many bassists that are lesser known but extremely talented musicians. I want to thank you Scott as you have kept the "spark" alive in all of your lessons. After a stroke at 59 years old I basically had to start learning to play over again. Sort of like Sisyphus rolling the rock up the hill again. My bass studies fom you Roy Vogt Billy sheehan ) has kept me going. Thanks again. Hope someday to meet you and thank you in person. Take care And keep the faith ! Rick
Nicely said Scott, regarding Billy Sheehan. And great fundamental lesson too.
I never thought to play a scale in one shape and go back up the scale using a different shape, that kind of blew my mind. Theoretically, it makes absolute sense and it'll definitely help me with my playing. Thank you so much for this lesson!
These videos are so helpful! Speaking of which, my 5 string Bass comes tomorrow!
Literally, just this video alone gave me a sense of progress on my bass playing where I had been feeling stuck for a very long time. Thank you so much.
Excellent!!!!! Just what I needed. Thanks for being online for us all.
I love the way Billy plays, I love his sound, his style, his albums, and I love Scott's videos! Thanks from Brazil. =D
Exactly the way my instructor approached scale lessons! Embarrassed that I had not applied this since until this reminder. Another of a multitude of reasons I subscribe!
I've been following Billy for years seen him many times. .
Nicest guy in the world and always goes out of his way to speak to his fans.
God bless Billy and Scott thank you for doing what you guys do.
Billy is the man! Not only can he play but I love his sound. I even bought his bass peddle. LOVE it!
Billy is one of most humble genuine and generous people I have ever spent time with. As for his playing, he is beyond compare in my eyes. Thanks for the videos Scott always a great watch and so informative.
This might be the best video out there about how to practice scales. Thanks !!!
I saw Billy Sheehan with The Winery Dogs in Columbus, OH in November of 2013. Wow, what an amazing show! Mr. Sheehan is phenomenal, and I find it hard to describe how fast he can play. From my experience, seeing him on UA-cam is one thing, but being in the second row and watching him play those amazing baselines was almost a magical experience. It is one of the top 5 concerts of my life, and I am truly grateful that I got see him live once in my lifetime. Thank you Scott for all that you do, and thank you for another wonderful lesson. I'm off to the shed.
This is one of your best lessons. I've been playing a long time, but I get roadblocks in my thought process. You opened it up a little. I "get it" more now.
Scott, I am a long way from some of the pros you profile. But studying with you has made me confident to play in a lot of settings. This is a great lesson. I am a very satisfied lifetime member.
Billy is beyond amazing! And if you see and hear him performing live, you will understand without question. Also he is a very nice and kind person
Billy is incredible! Your description of him is spot on. You can pick at this or that but overall he plays like no other bass player in the world.
Billy has a great command of the neck...love to watch him. Thanks for the vid Scott!
That's such a valuable lesson packed with so much knowledge explained in a way that allows you to actually apply the information and organize all of those random scales into music. Thanks!
Again, Scotty nailed it at the end: your fuking note as a bass player comes into context with the underlying harmony. I love this man!!
?
In context!?
In english please .
I LOVE Billy Sheehan, Scott!!! Between you and guys like him I’ve improved ten-fold over the last several years. You should totally have him on!! Cheers!
Perfect! Just what I've been wanting- a plan.
Billy Sheehan is the man, loved him for years. As much as he shreds, hes all about the groove. Really nice guy as well and very humble. He actually replied to a message I sent him. I'll keep it forever
NZ Bassist I’ll try to message him :DDD
He replied to me as well! Cool to hear that wasn't a one off
He replied to me as well, complimented me on the paint job I did on my attitude. As with you, I'll keep that message forever
Billy's one of the all time greats! Got to see him play with Vai, it was magical.
So glad you're giving Billy some love. He's a beast.
I used to read all his articles in Guitar for the Practicing Musician, back in the 80's. Guys got chops and knowledge.
I have had a bass for years and never played it. I will now! Brilliant!
I saw Billy Sheehan with the Winery Dogs. Hearing him and Portnoy play together was.. something else.
Sons of Apollo ...
I grew up watching Billy Sheehan with his first band...Talas...
Portnoy's complaint!
Absolutely love this lesson, thank you Scott
Your lessons are amazing, thank you so much for your energy and skills, really enjoying myself learning bass from you
Billy is a beast. Even though he makes my hands cry. Great video Scott, thanks man!
Thanks Scott !! That was out forthe most complete, comprehensible, and relate-able "scale" talk I have ever seen. I'm going to be transcribing it into a practice program to fill in some holes in my technique. I need to go to rehearsal tonite, but thanks to you, I'd rather be in the shed. BTW.. Nice shoutout for Billy!
I watched a 10 minute video , got weeks worth practicing from it ... best bass lesson channel in the world!
Awesome video, it's so useful! Especially about context, thanks a lot!
Wow man, that #2 is really an eye opener for me. I never came across that one before, but I know what I'll be practising the next couple of days. Thanks man!
I can’t thank you enough! These lessons are working so well for me! Great channel 👍🏻
Scott - thank you for this lesson - quite brilliant. Saw Billy Sheehan a few years ago and it was so inspiring. Thanks for what you do - learning much
Great stuff Scott. Thank you
Great video, as always!! Been a huge Billy fan since I started playing bass in my teens. Great, friendly, human as well.
My love for Billy Sheehan stems partially from his playing but even more from his personality and openness in interviews and clinics. Always encouraging playfulness and oddities and really good at explaining what he's doing on a minute level which is a sure sign of mastery.
Very useful video. Thanks Scott
Perhaps the most important video for me right now! Thanks
Great video on applying scales. I especially like number one, hearing it in context. I have a few Billy Sheehan lesson DVDs. They are awesome. He seems really cool, and I learned a lot from the DVDs.
Great work Scotty. Enjoying some fresh ideas.
Awesome video Scott. I wish I had a tenth of your skill & talent. Cheers.
I really love the way you paying your bass
Amen Scott!
Your videos have helped me tremendously. I am so grateful that you share your knowledge. And I think Billy Sheehan is an amazing bassist too👍keep on rockin
Excellent vid. Billy is the man!!!
Billy was the first bass player I new by name. His play style was what aspired me to start playing bass more seriously. Learned the scale from one of his interviews :)
I saw Billy in 1990 with Mr. Big... THREE TIMES! He's amazing. At one point he made eye contact with me during one of Paul's solos and pointed over to Paul as if to say, stop watching me, watch this guy! An experience I'll never forget. Thanks for sharing. I just discovered your channel (getting back into bass after more than 20 years away) I am inspired and energized. Thank you!
Another great lesson, Scott. Thanks. Billy Sheehan is my bass hero. "Lean into it" was the album that made me wanna be in a band at school. Seen him play live with Steve Vai, The Winery Dogs and Mr. Big (RIP Pat Torpey). He's just phenomenal.
Billy did a clinic in our local music store not too long ago, and yeah he rocks and has great tone (from small amps!) but what blew me away more than his playing was what a supremely nice and gracious guy he is. Just positive and encouraging and a pleasure to be around. PS his unique technique stems from his youth, using his bass to fill in the keyboard parts on cover songs because his band couldn't afford a keyboard or another member! Necessity, right? Cheers Scott!
Scott Billy rocks bro. I think hr is the most amazing bass player I have ever seen.
Thank you. Thoroughly enjoyable and practical videos. A lot of appreciation. Cheers
Scotty: worry, worry, worry....best bass man on YT ever! Don't leave us and I mean it.
Billy Sheehan DOES rock!!! Always thought it, always loved wat he does!!!
Billy is amazing. I remember seeing him with Talas back in the day.
Another fantastic tips, man!!! Awesome Rock On
You're awesome! I'm back to playing in guitar, and I will learn again how to play with your tutorial :) So you will be my master!
Billy Sheehan is one of the reasons i play bass. The day i heard Derek Sherinian´s "Axis of Evil" in wich Billy played the bass, i got hooked! Yes, he can shred, and he can do it musically, not an easy task. Thanks for the video Scott, you are a monster Bassist and an excellent teacher!
Hey...also a drummer, got a bass 2 weeks ago, and practice daily...I've jammed a few times, and people said I've improved...learning from you tube videos is a great teacher...
I love myself some three fingering on the G string :P... Shot for the awesome lesson Scott, you really got me back into my bass jams!!
Haha, I have one on his VHS teaching lessons!! A badass bass player!!!
Billy was one of the bassist that inspired me to learn to play. Bass bad ass!
Woof, I remember having to learn Billy's lines from a recording for a group I played with. He played on the track as a featured artist, so the expectation was to come in knowing what he played and expound on it. His pocket is real, and his chops are insane. I was like, goddamn man, leave some notes for the rest of us! Yeah, Billy is the man.
Billy is one of the most amazing bass players out there, I've seen him with a bunch of different artist and was always insane!!
Thanks Scott..🤓👍🎸🔊🎶
you are Epic geek Scott!! thanks for sharing bro!
Billy Sheehan is amazing! One of my favorite bass players and also such a humble guy.
Everyone's commenting on Billy Sheehan for some reason so can I just voice my appreciation for how awesome that jazz bass looks and sounds! Good lesson
Thank you, my master.
you are awesome!!!
billy, is unbelievable.
Thank you so much. This is great.
I really enjoy your lessons. More than anyone I’ve listen to before, you Really make things click for me. Thank you
Ps I see that I’m really late to this video. Oops
Great video. Thanks for this one
Hey man my fortay is keyboards and has been for asking as I can remember but got the need to learn the bass for realism instead of keyboard replicated bass sounds. So,researched and bought a jazz bassYour videos and tutorials are user friendly and fun.Youre doing a great job, thanks man 😎👌🎸🏴
Billy rocks the bass like no other! He’s a MONSTER bass player!
Billy rocks and is a nice person to boot!
MR.Billy is amazing, one of my heros! Original player; I dig!
Billy is a freak of nature. Beast! Monster of the low / high end of that bass.
💯💯💯
Great tips! Just thought that I'd add that while scales are all good and well, the MOST important thing to learn in my opinion is arpeggios. I say this from 20+ years of playing music on and off, having played a variety of instruments, having played in various bands, having written and recorded a lot of my own music, and ultimately having embraced the bass guitar as the instrument I'm most passionate about.
# 1 - Arpeggios are actually fun to play! By combining different arpeggios you actually make music as you practice, rather than just doing boring scale exercises. Thus, you stay more motivated.
# 2 - Learning arpeggios on bass is the equivalent of knowing every existing chord on guitar. Minors, majors, diminished, augmented, 7ths, 1st inversions, 2nd inversions, different types of fingering, different patterns, and understanding how they all correlate together. Once you learn all these patterns in one key, you automatically know them in every key. Music is made up of chords, not scales. Thus, it's much more practical.
# 3 - Once you've mastered arpeggios you'll know which extra notes fit in when needed, even if you've never formally studied scales. In other words, by becoming proficient with arpeggios you'll understand scales - but by being proficient with scales you won't understand arpeggios.
Scott has a great vid on arpeggios as well.
Dan Avi sed "... *combining different arpeggios you actually make music as you practice, rather than just doing boring scale exercises* ."
MUSIC being the take-home.
^ ^, This is immensley powerful and can cut years off ones' odyssey on the way to bass god.
I have a video clip of Jaco P. ~uncharistically thoughful~ when asked what he'd suggest first/foremost to ANY bassist wanting to break out of he mold...he was quiet...and then said `I'd say definitely learn and play melody `.
This is why, in the YTbe series I"m almost ready to spring on the world, I call what you're referring to: "ExerSongs". Those ol' boring scales, we don't call 'exercises' [your Mind-Body is quick to experience N.N.B Syndrome., 'neural net boredom'] ! Instead refer to them as..."Practice Routines". N.N. will lo-v-v-e you.
And hey, very astute of you !
! ! In addition, at 03:26, not THIS ^ ^ page...but here folks >> ua-cam.com/video/gqIVab46KV8/v-deo.html
Just stumbled on it *after* my abv post. Wow & LOL.
(Is there an echo ?)
Next...once you can make it thru a solid go-round, go back and learn to SING it while playing it. AND get it *DOWN COLD* [so you can talk to your significant other while...well, not singing, but playing it thru flawlessly]. & if you have to slow it down to do this, so what! Instead, just be thinking abt how many minds you'll blow when you speed it up again.
This general technique hugely helps collapse the "delay factor in advancing quickly" btw.
The way I see it, learn your major scale inside out and understand why it and its degrees exist, and then learn all your arpeggios as "removals." For example, if you know your C Major up and down two octaves and all around the fret board, and then one day you say "Ok, so for a maj 7 arpeggio I need to do 1 3 5 ^7," and you learn how to shred that in the same context, and then dom 7, then min 7, then dom b7 etc., and then your modes, you will be a way better player. I call it "arpeggio by removal."
It will make a lot more sense than just learning all those things independently from one another.
your absolutely Right about Arpeggios but scott would rather bore us with scale exercises
Thanks scott. this video has helped alot
Scott your a good teacher. Good video.
Oops almost forgot to thank the awesome Scottster! Your tips are always gold mate ;-)
Huge respect and lots of love for Scot nd Billy shen my fav....
Love ❤ All the way from India 🇮🇳 .. (Darjeeling)
Billy is amzing.
SBL is fantastic.
Always wows me, both.
This is awesome !!!!! So easy to understand, but so long to master ^^
I'm with you on Billy.
I've never been a big fan of Billy's music until recently (Sons of Apollo are freaking awesome), but I've always loved watching him play. He has a freakish level of talent. I saw him in Seattle a couple months ago, and I left with my tail between my legs. He's absolutely one of a kind.
Most of mr.Sheehan haters are yelling - "his shredding a lot! That's not what a real bass player should do" or " I hate his tone!".
Billy Sheehan can really do those thing you calling - real bassist work - in much better way then most good solid bass players can. He can record a session in one take, with the tone that fits a song and it will be perfect, and it will be way much interesting than you could expect from a good solid bassist.
Urich jr People who complain about how some people have excelled at an instrument, and found their own style are annoying, lol.
Bass playing doesn't get much more real than when Billy Sheehan is playing. The haters are just jealous, as is usually the case.
i`m gonna be hated for this. but in my opinion victor wooten shreds way more when he goes on that double thumb trip than billy
Billy just has it all. Original sound, rad skills, great dynamics (when he is in the mood, lol) and most importantly, intensity like no other.
I don't like his stuff that much but that's just me. I like porridge.
The color and the pickgaurd of your bass is in my favorite top3 of favorites! Thanks for the vid!
IKR the neck is hideous though :(
Wesley Dunn not orange lol
The note E can mean something just by itself. I love the lowest F note, how deep it sounds and vibrates, and the tension on that fret. Sometimes i just hit that single note and let it sustain and listen. Sound comes before melody, physics in music comes before mathematics.
I love this, so nicely said. I only just recently have begun viewing music and playing bass in this way. It really has reignited that true passion for the instrument and creating.
I agree Scott. Billy is a great musician as a bass player for sure. If people are negative toward him all I can say is they are nothing but jealous. He has risen to the height he is at because he never gave up. This is all he has ever done and he has reached heights others will not due to them not sticking with it. Thank you Billy ...you are an inspiration to all young bass players as well as older ones like me. Also, thank you Scott for the excellent lesson and all you do to help educate all of us toward bass playing.
First time seeing Billy. Sounds incredible.
That was great!
he is absolutely amazing!
