Fear names. Names have power in identity. Others can use names as weapons. Names are a hook that can be used to track you across the planes. Remain nameless, and you shall be safe. I am the Nameless One.

The three things I will never forget about this game:
    1. Hitting on zombie women with Mort.
    2. Allowing a zombie to use a few pieces of my arm as a snack.
    3. Cutting off my ring finger and violently jamming a magic ring finger into the hole.

This theme brings back so many memories... If all games had even a fraction of the depth and intelligence of Planescape Torment, then video games truely would be considered "art".

  • @bottledspace

BG has the best gameplay in the DnD medium.
Planescape: Torment has the best storyline in any videogame ever. Nothing has come close since, and nothing will ever come close again. It would blow my mind to see somebody top it. Not just videogames either. It has one of the best stories ever told, and I am unmovable in that belief.
BTW, I played through it for the first time in 2010-2011, so I'm not just wearing my nostalgia glasses here. It holds up.

  • @Awarawazu

Come on! Do we really need to argue about which game is better? Both of them are masterpieces in their own way and that`s what matters. Besides why start insulting people who like this game? Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I`ve played both BG and PS:T and I consider the two of them the pinnacle of fantasy RPG.

    • @drogin88

Well, I can at least tell you which has aged best. I'm now 26, and I didn't play these when I was a kid, and got no nostalgia for them. I tried them both last year. I got bored of baldurs gate 1 fairly quickly, but tried to finish, but as I got to the main town, I just couldnt anymore...I was bored to death. Planescape torment however....chills all the way!

Jack Daxter Baldur's Gate is just a "fairytale" (I mean typical high-fantasy) saga. Perfectly done but the setting is not unique at all. While Planescape: Torment is the pinnacle of occidental RPGs in terms of originality and depth. IMO that's what makes it stand out.

This game has one of the weirdest settings of all times, you wander across fantastical and terrifying worlds where laws of reality, time, space and logic are twisted and fascinating. And this music encapsulates the feeling fantasticaly.

Technically it shares quite a lot in common with JRPGs being a fairly linear story line with only one character option. The beauty of the game is the illusion of choice it provides the character by imitating WRPGs in allowing you to customize the present while being locked into a set past and future for the Nameless One. I have yet to see a game that properly mimics this amazing blend.

  • @DrNightbringer
    @DrNightbringer 14 років тому +2

It truly amazes me how well this game is written, a paragraph of written description and dialogue from Planescape is more gripping and vivid than all those uncanny-valley awkward looking 3D models from Elder Scroll, Mass Effect and Final Fantasy 13 combined.

I remember seeing the trailer for PS:T on my copy of Baldur's Gate... never got around to playing it, I was too busy giving my every waking hour to the BG games and have now made my way to that king of all time-drainers... college. If I could find this game and the time to play it, I would easily get into it and not give a crap about the aged engine. Playing these games was so engrossing, it was like reading a masterpiece novel that you could *live*. Unrivalled by any game today or tomorrow.

Greatest roleplaying moment GM'n MY Sigil, a giant multiversal megalopolis, reminiscent of magical Coriscant. :
My buddy's GF was new to RP, early on she fell off a huge walkway on the "sky(plane)scraper", she was intercepted by traffic. An Ancient Gold Dragon that was flying by literally liquified her body across his face... bug on a windshield. Her astral self continued in the campaign, She was a Gith. He was a Tiefling.

The thing that did it for me was the copy'n'pasted dungeons. I don't know how much of it you played, but I swear to god there was only four. A beach, a warehouse, a sewer, and a cave. Any time you entered a different cave, a different warehouse, a different sewer, it was always exactly the same as the last. Identical. A shameless copy'n'paste job, I shit you not.
The only thing that changed was maybe a door here and there would be locked from time to time, or you'd start at the opposite end.

This is the best occidental RPG to ever come out. It beats the BGs, Icewind Dales, Gothics or Fallouts. The only game to rival Torment is The Witcher. These two titles share narrative similarities but i think The Witcher is only possible because all this other Rpgs set a series of standards the Witcher came to break.

I remember engaging in stupid arguments about 10 years ago on the Black Isle Studios message boards, because I was a sensitive fanboy and I hated it whenever someone criticized my favorite games. Now reading the BG vs. PS:T arguments here at youtube just makes me feel sad. I love both games. Each one has earned its place in history. I practically grew up on both of them. The elitism that some PS:T fans have is completely unwarranted. They're the same demographic that played BG, by and large.

  • @bcr579

Man, need to go back and play this game. I had the discs somewhere, but I might just pick it up from Good Old Games and call it, only 9.99.
As for the fantards arguing what's 'best' - Trying to compare them is kind of silly. PS:T had one of those stories where you can't really play it through and rush, it's deep, and merits serious thought and reflection. The Baldur's Gate games had far stronger combat gameplay, and was entertaining, and a good story.
Both are among the greats, respect them.

We had a debate about that the other day actually. The fate of the nameless one after he fuses with his mortality. I for one say he is still alive, even without the immortality granted to most blood war participants.

QFT. Same situation as Baldurs Gate really. Black Isle/Bioware crafted great games because they told a great story - with a beginning, a middle and an end... something that's often forgotten in this day and age, with a desperate need to plurp out as many sequels as possible.
