After WW II many former German soldiers joined the French Forgien Legion. They brought with them many of those marching songs.

Why are they cutting out and not singing the whole song? For example
"Au drapeau de kepi blanc"
But they're saying
"Au drapeau de kepi --"

It is not uncommon for armed forces to "borrow" mannerism, marching songs and clothing. It can be a sign of respect for a tough foe, or also to show one has bested them. Modern anthropoly has numerous examples of this kind of warrior code. In simpler terms if Kim Kardashian would wear a fez, half of the world's youth would copyright her imediatly! 😄

There was a lot of Germans signing up after WWII they had nowhere to go and were very experienced soldiers. It is common for people in similar situations who join up coming from a place where there has been war. Germans bring the song and the tune is adopted. Some songs were even sung in German.
