I remember him as a kid (Highland hills gym Dallas Texas) He was dunking at 5’4! His mother and Aunt watched over him, close family, his back yard was a hop over the fence into field behind the gym. The Fence was bent so we knew his house. He was lightning fast and could fly. He’s definitely not forgotten by me. I was SO into the NBA from about 1987 to 1998, playing on all my teams and practicing constantly. But I never had much natural talent. Even at 6’1”, I was never able to dunk, and honestly could barely even touch the rim. So seeing Spud do it with relative ease? Crap, that blew my mind! Sometimes the talent certain people possess just astounds me.

Always looks like there’s an invisible step ladder he uses half way up. Just finds some kinda second gear. Incredible. I was at that Lakers game where he went coast-to-coast and threw down. I was under the basket opposite the dunk. I had that camera's eye-view and recall him running back into my direction. Spudd was a genuine phenom (as was Muggsy; both absolutely 100% fearless). Spudd could flat-out ball and could play anywhere on any court. A real talent and legend.

"Give me the ball, I'm gunna dunk on this little B**"
Every time I would steal or intercept.
Eventually LET him think he was clear to dunk on me.. then last second jumped up and rejected him so hard..that at his own school the whole crowd started laughing...even his own team !!

Spud Webb was not only short he was small 133lbs. That's totally different that a lot of other short players. Nate robinson for example was 180lbs, big hands, big feet, long arms. Spud was literally the size of a child.

Back when the ACC was king, I was growing up in North Carolina. I saw SO many incredible players go though the elite basketball schools in the ACC but few had left the mark that Spud did at NC State. He was 'must see TV' before there was even such a thing.

Being from Maryland I got to see a lot of ACC games with Spud and Mugsy. We knew Spud could dunk in college and it was exciting watching the little guys play well. I didn't know they would have such an impact in the NBA. When Spud was in the dunk competition I remembered being happy for him but when he started pulling out these clutch dunks you knew you were witnessing a magical moment. For a guy that size his timing had to be impeccable in order to pull of some of those dunks with no margin for error.

Bouncing the ball on the floor having it land on the iron and bounce back and catching it and dunking it. It was a thrill just of see it again. Thanks for the post.

I went to a game to see Manute, and I thought it was so nice that before the game they were letting the ball boy shoot some hoops with the real players. Them Spud started dunking during the warm-ups, and my jaw hit the floor.
