- Wait, I've got two thousand subscribers? Two thousand people actually pressed that button and let me into their feed? That is absolute insanity. Thank you thank you thank you to everyone. And I'm going to celebrate in style.
Sixteen years ago, in November 2007, the folks at Hampden distillery made a batch of their second highest ester mark, and a ton of it ended up at the European rum brokers (this was before Hampden was bottling their own stuff, remember). Among hardcore Jamaican rum nerds that batch has now become somewhat legendary, and I've previously had two of them: a Golden Devil that got a bit too woody ( • South Pacific Versus H... ) and an absolutely stunning Holmes Cay ( • 40th Birthday Reviews,... ). Let's see if we can triple that number with a single video. Yep, it's a quartet of 2007 C🔷H, hold on to your butts:
- Hampden Distillery 2007 14 Year Old Jamaican Rum, Single Cask No. 5 (bottled by Duncan Taylor; C🔷H, 1300-1400 g/hLaa, distilled 11/2007, bottled 2022; 50.8% ABV), 91/100
- "HD" Distillery 2007 15 Year Old Jamaican Rum, Refill Hogshead No. 8 (bottled by The Whisky Jury for The Purist & Care For Craft Spirits; C🔷H, 1300-1400 g/hLaa, distilled 11/2007, bottled 11/2022; 239 bottles; 62.3% ABV), 92+/100
- Hampden Distillery 2007 11 Year Old Jamaican Rum, Single Cask for The Whisky Barrel (bottled by Kill Devil/Douglas Laing; C🔷H, 1300-1400 g/hLaa, distilled 11/2007, bottled circa 2019; 321 bottles; 63.2% ABV), 93/100
- Hampden Distillery 2007 15 Year Old Jamaica Single Cask Rum (bottled by FRC/Flensburg Rum Company; C🔷H, 1300-1400 g/hLaa, distilled 11/2007, bottled August 2023; 66.2% ABV), 92/100
This flight was an absolute assault, and I could barely taste anything but C Diamond H for hours afterwards. They're all great, great bottles, to the point that I'll tell you right now to buy just about any reasonably priced 11/2007 bottle of Hampden that you see.
Picking winners and losers is hard. The Duncan Taylor is the least of the bunch, but it's still amazing and it does have an interesting "pickled nuts" thing that I've never encountered before. The Whisky Jury and FRC casks are stylistically very close, a bit more restrained on the nose but a bomb of fruit on the palate (except incredibly dry at the same time) - the former is a hair bit better, but not by much. My pick of the three is the ripping Kill Devil 11yo, which feels the rawest of the four yet also somehow the most balanced. The moral? Never, ever let anyone tell you that the days of available great spirits are over.

Congrats on 2k! I bought the Kill Devil 11 a little while back and it was amazing. It didn't last long. I also purchased a Kill Devil 17 from Hampden and haven't opened it yet. Keep up the great work!

@@differentspirits4157 I wish I had your level of restraint :). Importantly, I shared a good deal of the Kill Devil with several friends who had never had Hampden before. Not surprisingly, it didn't go well in most cases.

Congrats man! I love what this channel represents and how it has no boundaries by spirit specificity. There's just too many amazing things to drink out there like Hampden, a distillery with such unique character and distinction. Among my spirits journey I am also delving into wine more and more. I understand that wine is your expertise. Is there a wine producer/region that you find is like distilleries such as Hampden, Turkey, Caschuin? Something amazing that is flying under peoples radar?
Thanks!! That's a really tricky question and a ton of things come to mind, but if I had to pick one wine category it might actually be sherry. For the quality, I think dry sherry is hugely unappreciated and underpriced at the moment.

I started watching you just 3 days ago. If you want some feedback - I mainly stumbled and stayed because I am an ARMAGNAC enthusiast.
Another reason I watched a lot of your armagnac videos is because of your deep and detailed explanations, examinations ,comparing and recommendations. The golden rule - put entry level armagnacs at $50. I am situated in Chicago and have no clue where to start from when it comes to purchases besides online. Any store recommendations ?

@@differentspirits4157 everybody says the Daiquiri's with this are great. Don't know if it can knock Probitas off it's pedestal for the best Daiquii rum but I know it will be good and probably a better sipper than Probitas
you should have 5 figures in subs because there are so many hacks on UA-cam that do and they aren't half of your insight or palate. Please try to get with Eric Malt Muser and start doing things together here and there with rum and whisky

@@differentspirits4157 the Worthy Park Overproof makew a good Daiquiri but I would still take Probitas over it but neat this stuff is good and way better than Probitas and the heavy olive notes are great
@@differentspirits4157 this Worthy Park Overproof is super clean as usual with Worthy Park and no acetoney notes or off notes. This is well blended. Not super complex but doesn't need to be. Tasty stuff
